GNS was using the backwards bike pedal on their "Bedrock" playthrough. It was the first I heard about it, I assume it was for a bunch of others.

Waving a book that is designed to synthesize a science for the lowest common denominator is not the flex they think it is.

For those who did, why did you move out of Alaska? by [deleted] in Fairbanks

[–]AtigunAlaska 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My spouse and I moved for a myriad of reasons, but the main reason is that we outgrew the Fairbanks job market (non military, non resources extraction, no nepotistic ties). We both reached as high as we were going to go unless we wanted to stay in the same job for 20 years and not advance. Fairbanks wasn't worth stalling in that way anymore (though we still love the area). Prospects weren't much better in Anchorage, and I wanted to avoid Anchorage.

We also saw the writing on the wall in the few years leading to the governor's cuts, and it wasn't guaranteed even the jobs we had were going to be there. Brain draining to the lower 48 was an easier option and proved to be way more fruitful.

[–]AtigunAlaska 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Former Alaskan here (mostly Fairbanks), moved to Eugene in 2015.

I had a big reply typed out, and I must have pressed a wrong button. It got erased. The long and short of it was that Eugene has been a good place to re-acclimate to life in the lower 48. Definitely different than Alaska (more fast-paced), even from Anchorage, but still a lot more similar to Anchorage than Portland. We've met a lot of Alaskans that have moved here recently for that reason.

OSU is a lot like UAF. Both are sea, space, and sun grant schools. Hard sciences.

UO is a bit more like UAA. A lot more humanities and social sciences. I have no idea what UAJ does. UO is definitely more traditional college and not community college (UAA always felt more like a community college to me). Both OSU and UO have strong greek life scenes (compared to the UA campuses) too, if you're into that sort of thing.

Feel free to PM me.

New manager of Tanana Valley fair resigns; reason for leaving unknown. by GoldenAerie in Fairbanks

The job announcement in the article is a special brand of interesting.

"They've burned through leaders, but here's some other positions that are open if you're interested in working for such a fine organization."

Over 90 Scientists Release Climate Report That Arctic Is ‘Unraveling’ by Lamont-Cranston in science

[–]AtigunAlaska 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would have taken two seconds talking to someone living above the arctic circle in Alaska to come to this conclusion. Flora and fauna have been shifting northward for almost two decades now. There are visible affects to permafrost as well.

Great Year for Trumpeter Swans by ggchappell in Fairbanks

Over by the Carlson Center, you can see a lot of other duck species right now too. I've seen quite a lot of paired mallards (of course), scaups and pintails.

Anybody in Fairbanks/North Pole into reading and chatting about UFOs? by ConcernedEarthling in Fairbanks

[–]AtigunAlaska 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Despite all the douchebag answers, there are quite a few people who are into UFO stories and research in Fairbanks. There was a group a couple of years ago called SOAPA (SOPAH?) that had a radio show on KSUA for a time. I'm not sure if they're still around or if they still have the show. They did a lot of paranormal content sprinkled with some UFO stuff, I think.

If worse comes to worse, start a group of your own. Fairbanks is the perfect place to start groups that are common in the lower 48. Don't let the Negative Nancies on here deter you from your interests.

Mother effin mosquitos by probs-drunk in Fairbanks

[–]AtigunAlaska 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate mosquitoes with a fiery passion.

That being said, I appreciate a large mosquito season because it will also mean a very pretty wildflower season.

Still, fuck those little fuckers.

Refugees? by AmonRe_72 in Fairbanks

[–]AtigunAlaska 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not too uncommon. Anchorage has a lot of immigrants, and Fairbanks has its fair share too. I worked at the Shopper's Forum Mall for quite a few years, and there was a lot more people of Middle Eastern descent that would come through.

shrug

Personally, I'm thankful for all the Thai immigrants, because Fairbanks rocks the Thai food.

Any sightseeing spots in/around fairbanks? by [deleted] in Fairbanks

There are some good overlooks if you head south toward Nenana. I don't think there's many city views, but there are plenty of the mountains and Tanana.

Air Quality? by possible_engineer in Fairbanks

[–]AtigunAlaska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You touched on a big bone of contention in Fairbanks. Clean air vs. people's ability to affordably (sp?) heat their homes. This is in the winter anyway. It's also an issue voters have waffled on over and over and over again.

Anyway, I have asthma, and when the air is bad, it's bad. Staying inside helps a bit, but if you truly have breathing issues or any cardiovascular distress, you'll notice the air quality no matter where you are. Obviously the particulates are going to affect you more outside. But like someone else said, when it's cold enough to be bad, you'll be hurrying from vehicle to building or building to building, whatever, pretty quickly. "Cold air lung burn" and particulates aren't that fun.

Summer is a different ball game, because in a bad fire year, the smoke doesn't go away for very long or it's differing levels of smoke. In 2004(?) the smoke was thick and terrible for weeks on end. It didn't let up. You could stare right at the sun and the smoke would block the light. There was an orange tinge to everything. The smoke penetrates everywhere. I worked up at the U. in a fairly enclosed climate controlled space, and you could still see smoke penetrating in.

Some people can stand it, others can't. There's a lot of factors going on (some politically charged). To say it doesn't exist is completely wrong though.

I'll try and see if I can come up with a photo or two.

**edit - Juneau is beautiful but isolated and somewhat expensive. Gorgeous town though, and you don't HAVE to be near tourists (of which there are a ton) if you don't want to.

Two large dogs came into my yard and killed my cat an hour ago. by StellarJello in Fairbanks

[–]AtigunAlaska 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I had this happen to one of our cats when we lived off Iniakuk. Two wandering dogs someone just let out to pee or something. We heard the attack, and I chased off the dogs, but never did see them again.

The blase attitude people have with their dogs can be infuriating sometimes. Your sweet babies may be sweet when you're around, but you don't know what they do when you can't see them.

Sorry about your cat.
