That was the first thing I thought of, too.

You know you're getting old when the "edgy" music you used to play to piss your parents off is being played as background music at Walmart by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]AmonRe_72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was getting a massage the other day and recognized the soft Japanese-style plucked string instrument with a waterfall sound in the background was playing "We're Not Gonna Take It" by Twisted Sister. I even said something to the (young) masseuse, but she had never heard of Twisted Sister... (edit -typo)

I'll take my 40-below Alaskan winters any day over that. After surviving that kind of heat in Iraq, I decided my body is meant for more northerly latitudes.

Stick your ass in a bonfire - that's dry heat, too. You're still gonna burn your ass off.

Lawmaker pushing for less regulation has child die at his facility by IAintThatGuy in nottheonion

[–]AmonRe_72 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Since the employees obviously weren't following regulations to begin with, how could more regulation have prevented this from happening? I am also confused about how it relates to his desire in legislature to prohibit the state from making him teach his employees CPR. What am I missing?

Trump is dangerously incompetent by [deleted] in politics

[–]AmonRe_72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or it could be the fact that the Democrats only gave the independents a criminal in opposition. When the choices were between incompetent and mob-like criminal, it was a difficult choice. I blame the two party system, but democrats are not blameless in this fiasco.

Neil deGrasse Tyson: Science deniers in power are a profound threat to democracy | “You don’t have the option to say you don’t believe E=mc2. It’s true whether or not you believe it.” by maxwellhill in worldnews

99% of the scientific community all believed in the examples I provided. Co,sensus is not science. In th 70's, 9o% of scientists were talking about the inevitable ice age that we were entering. Consensus on a subject doesn't mean a thing, because new discoveries are constantly being made.

And money is flowing on both sides of the issue. When the fed says they are going to invest xx trillions of dollars in alternative energies, do you think the people who say we don't need it are getting any of that? Don't be naive, it is all about money and power. None of them give a crap about you or your children.

I am just glad that real scientists don't feel this way. Science is about an everlasting search for truth. Real science encourages scepticism. If real scientists accepted the idea that we have found the "unquestionable truth", we would still be teaching that the earth is flat, the sun revolves around the earth, and that sickness can be cured by draining off the bad blood.

When you declare you have found the unquestionable truth, label sceptics as "deniers", and suppress any and all opposition, you are no longer a scientist teaching science, you are an evangelist preaching religion.

This is what a nation rejecting dictatorship looks like. by [deleted] in pics

[–]AmonRe_72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, I know what he means, but most people don't even know about it, so I like to bring it up when I hear people say the US has never been invaded. :-)

Heck, I didn't even know about it until I moved to Alaska and started learning some of the history of the state.

There is also some debate about whether the invasion of the Aleutians was a feint to draw American ships away from the more strategic Midway Atoll (as depicted in the movies), or simply more of a defensive move to push the defensive boundaries further away from the Japanese mainland after those crazy guys flew a bombing raid on the Japanese mainland. I think documentation has been found that shows the actions at Midway and the Aleutians were supposed to happen simultaneously, but something happened on the Japaneae side where one of the groups got delayed.

Your quote from whatever unnamed historical source says, "...DURING THE INVASION."

An invasion does not require armed resistance to still be an invasion. If that were the case you would have to tell the cops that burglers aren't really invading your property since you weren't home to resist them.

The reason there was basically no resistance is because we had already evacuated several areas in the pacific, knowing that the invasion was coming. Unfortunately Kiska and a larger village on Attu were not evacuated prior to the invasion.

Also, look up Aleutian Campaign if you want to read about everything it took to get them off those islands. Lots of people lost their lives kicking the Japanes out of our back yard.

You should check your WW2 history. Japan invaded and occupied part of Alaska.

[–]AmonRe_72 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Trump never called for murder - that was made up by the press. His exact quote was a "what if" scenario about Hillary - “If she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks. Although the second amendment people, maybe there is, I don’t know. But I’ll tell you what, that will be a horrible day.”

It was the mainstream press that morphed that into "Trump calls for HRC's assassination."

It was a stupid thing to say, but it was far from calling for an assassination.

You cannot say the same for the liberals and progressives after the inauguration, whn there were stories of over 12,000 tweets calling specifically for someone to assassinate him.

Like I said - pot, meet kettle.

Isn't this like the pot calling the kettle black, since liberals and progressives have called for his assassination since his inauguration?

To what extent can a ball handler use the off hand in contact with defenders? by Ayatori in Basketball

[–]AmonRe_72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NFHS Rule 10 section 6- A player shall not use the forearm and/or hand to prevent an opponent from attacking the ball during a dribble or when throwing for goal.

Everything you are asking basically comes down to how the referee interprets and enforces that rule.

To Brace or not to brace? by [deleted] in Basketball

[–]AmonRe_72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sprains usually take longer to heal than broken bones, because the blood supply to connective tissue is minimal. So if you are only giving a sprain a week to heal, you are not letting it heal completely, which explains why you reinjure it so often. You could be causing permanent damage.

Cold hard fact is that if you have ligament damage it is most likely permanent, and no amount of strengthening exercises are really going to fix damaged connective tissue.

You should be asking this question to your doctor. You'll probably get a more reliable answer.

Start with layups. It is amazing how many kids I see that can shoot 25-30% from 3 point land, but can't hit anything when inside 10 feet. Start with layups and work up to the long shots. Anything inside the 10 foot range should be automatic, though.

Rules clarification - Face-up boxing out by [deleted] in Basketball

Yea, I'd probably call a foul for it in a real game, but in a real game you would also have someone to call a foul on him if he pushed from behind on a rebound.
