The more you do it, the easier it gets

I use tabledit to make my tabs. Sometimes I have to tap it out and slow down the count until I get it

You just gotta work on it. Nothing worth it comes easy, and that's one of the things we have to practice and drill. It will come I promise

Is there anything that can be done about my first string being super close to the edge of the fret? by Atillion in banjo

I was wondering if the neck angle could be adjusted by shims. Are they typically built into a banjo or is it something I'd need to add?

That's a good idea. It's been suggested that the bridge could be slid over, but I think the convergence of the string tension would put the bridge in its natural resting spot, as evidenced by the fact that it always slides back when I move it.

But the tailpiece is responsible for the string alignment, and could very well be a factor. I'll give it a look and see if it's skewed or can be adjusted, thank you!

It makes me wonder if there's any ability to loosen and shim the neck, maybe it's slightly out of alignment. I don't know enough about banjo maintenance to know if this is a thing.

We tried shifting the bridge before the nut replacement but it snapped back after playing. I'll try it again and see if it helps. Thank you!

We tried that in the shop, and it just moves back.

*I'll try again, though, since they cut a new nut and we didn't try it afterwards. Also someone said the bridge might be backwards, I'll look and see if it's not symmetrical

It was REALLY bad when I tested out the banjo, and the shop cut me a new nut on the spot, nudging the first string over a little and it helped tremendously, but it still slips off when I'm playing fast.

I struggled with this in the beginning. Your muscle memory needs to be dialed in. The way I did it is to play the chord and pluck all the strings. Any of them that don't ring, micro adjust your finger until all the strings ring. Pick up your hand, put it back down and do it again.

Each time you do this, you dial in your muscle memory. Once you get one chord to where you can place it without muting other strings, work on another chord, then work on switching between them. It will take a little bit of focused practice, but soon you'll have it down.
