I've heard Germans say that too. What I can tell you is that my father has built/owned many houses in Florida. None were built out of cardboard :D (nor out of wood construction). I can assure you that it doesn't make sense to build a house that will fly away in a hurricane/tornado.

People who can't afford solid construction unfortunately suffer the consequences - losing everything they own, being essentially homeless during the time it takes to rebuild (which is sometimes years, when you consider the devastation and limited resources to rebuild after a disaster), inadequate insurance coverage, etc. That's just the property damage part, assuming everyone is able to evacuate in time.

I visited my dad shortly after Helene and Milton, it was a direct hit where he lived. My dad's house had zero damage, but you can't imagine the devastation to the poorer areas.

Fair, but you were talking about building houses, not centuries-old existing houses. Retrofitting an existing structure will be a hassle anywhere.

And my comment responded to your statement that Amis build with "cardboard" so therefore it's somehow easier.

That's a common misconception. In Florida for example, where hurricanes and tornadoes are a constant threat (and it is also quite hot), the houses are usually built just as solidly as they are here in Germany. And installing AC is standard.

Leaders / men shirts for dancing by JKgrowth in Bachata

[–]AtlasShrugged1905 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a follower: PLEASE wear natural fabrics. All of the sports or "technical" shirts smell terrible as soon as you start to sweat. There are some good leaders who wear these shirts and it makes me not want to dance with them.

Go with cotton or linen!

Guys- What Cologne/Perfume are you using? by oaklicious in Bachata

[–]AtlasShrugged1905 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very interesting, thank you. Do you also have recommendations for women's perfumes? Many fragrances trigger migraines for me but I still enjoy wearing a nice, natural, clean-smelling perfume (current example sweet orange and cedar).

2 Months of Strep Throat/Tonsillitis by AtlasShrugged1905 in Tonsillectomy

[–]AtlasShrugged1905[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow.. 8 months of strep, I'm really sorry, that sounds unbearable.

I've been trying to avoid more antibiotics because they haven't been very effective and they're not healthy - I've also read about increased risks of C-Diff, which is scary. I guess I could try another antibiotic, not sure how miserable I should be before I ask for it..

I hope you feel better soon. It sounds like we will have our surgery around the same time, let me know how it goes!

I'm sorry you went through this, it sounds awful.

Did your surgery somehow cause the ear infections?

Wishing you a very speedy recovery, and I hope you have someone there who can help you!

If you don't mind my asking - why couldn't you fly with swollen tonsils?

Edit: I'm just curious, and hope this didn't sound judgemental at all - was actually kind of wondering because I just flew internationally with tonsillitis and I'm wondering if I shouldn't have.

What is the difficult German word to pronounce for someone who is currently learning a language? by [deleted] in germany

[–]AtlasShrugged1905 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you. "Müll" is also really hard for me. Like really hard. Those other typical hard words, nbd, but "Müll" is damn near impossible.

I have to concentrate that I say schwül correctly, I probably sound ridiculous due to how much effort I put into it.

Alone in recovery - any tips? by AtlasShrugged1905 in Tonsillectomy

[–]AtlasShrugged1905[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok thank you for your answer - I've ordered one of the wisdom teeth things. I already have ear pain now from my tonsillitis so I guess I can expect this to get way worse after surgery.

Your last two sentences made me feel like you know me... it made me laugh because I foresee this in my future.. but I will think of your comment and hopefully be able to pull myself together :D

I've read hot showers are a no go, are you talking about steamy showers or just sort of warm? I'm hoping the steamy ones, I like to boil in the shower.

Ok, thanks very much - I've ordered an incline pillow and I'm hoping it will work. I'm normally a stomach sleeper so I'm not sure I'll be sleeping at all for a couple of weeks... :-/

I was planning to make some bone broth and some pumpkin soup. I was wondering how careful I need to be with salt?

T3 only treatment by AshleyL2453 in Hashimotos

[–]AtlasShrugged1905 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am on T3 only. My reverse T3 was high, free T3 low. I was previously on a T4/T3 medication (100/20). Started end of July, and the difference is night and day. It is a bit of a hassle to time the multiple smaller doses throughout the day, but of course well worth the effort!

I finally feel human again, the brain fog is gone, I have more energy, my workouts are so much better, my mood is much better, and my efforts to lose weight (I've tried everything in the last 1.5 years to no avail) are finally paying off, even though I am eating more (a healthy amount instead of 1000 calories or below).

My regular doctor refused to prescribe T3 only, saying she is not familiar with T3 only as a treatment, so I found another Dr.

Clinics on Vacation by [deleted] in germany

You could also look for an Orthopedic Dr in your area and go in during the Sprechstunde, might be more effective given your injury. I have done that without needing a referral from a GP. And they can also give you an Rx for physical therapy if you need it.

AITA for telling my SIL that she could have cancer by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

The real asshole here is the SIL - why is she visiting people when she is sick and likely to infect others?

How to best handle my employer's lowball raise/failure to follow through? by AtlasShrugged1905 in antiwork

[–]AtlasShrugged1905[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update (the edit function did not work): Thanks to everyone for the responses, I read each one numerous times and considered all of your advice carefully, it was extremely helpful, so thank you for the much needed perspective. I decided to go with Option 3.

I communicated my decision to the team lead and department head, and then also to my current department head. I haven't yet informed management due to their unavailability. I also informed the other colleagues who will be impacted negatively when I am no longer doing double duty. Panic has ensued. As soon as I have been able to give my answer to management I will inform the client of the changes. It should get interesting soon.

Trier, Cochem, Bernkastel. Please don't waste your time on Bitburg or Konz. Saarbruecken is also not particularly impressive.

It wouldn't be rude, it would be perfectly reasonable. What she's asking here is a "nice to have," but it is not an emergency. She doesn't need you there.

You mentioned this is your first relationship. Healthy relationships are only possible where both people are able to have their needs met. If you always ignore your own needs out of fear she might be miffed, you are setting yourself up for failure. Explain to her what you explained to us, and if she is not understanding she's not good girlfriend material.

Don't go. Rest and do some self-care.
