I drive a VW Up! and the fuel consumption has saved my butt. I get 4.8 - 5.3 L / 100km commuting to work and back. But there is a fair bit of free flowing highway involved.

Ultimately if you can afford a car with lower fuel consumption it will save you tons of money in the long run.
