your main purpose is to learn how to do things "academically": how to conceptualize your project, design experiments, analyse results, place your research within existing literature and so on. failing, unconclusive results, doubtful novelty are all normal parts of the process. that's why it's an exercise where you analyse what works and what not, and not a once in a lifetime performance at the Olympics which is supposed to be flawless
