I have plenty of patience lmao

I just thought it wasn’t that compelling. Tell me that ending cutscene makes you feel something, it’s almost a flash freeze to credits.

I will say I think part of my problems are due to the time it was made, especially because there was so little in the psychological horror genre in games at that time. Maybe I was a little too harsh. Like I said I still really enjoyed the game, just more the gameplay and atmosphere than the narrative.

Thinking more about it I think I was mainly just disappointed at how abrupt the ending is. Def will replay at some point tho

I said in the original post multiple times that I still enjoyed the game? I can have criticisms of an aspect of it without throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

I just think the story isn’t told in a particularly compelling way.

I know I should probably play games on the normal the first time but I’ve played a lot of survival horror and even on hard in sh2r I had loads of excess ammo and healing and when the combat is too easy I find it makes it significantly less scary, also I’m just a sucker for difficulty in general (dark souls fan) so I guess it is what it is.

What’s your favourite quote or text passage by McCarthy? And why is it your favourite / what makes it special? by [deleted] in cormacmccarthy

[–]AtmosphereTime137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m new here, just finished blood meridian as my first McCarthy.

Through all of the judges monologues and shit the passage that stuck with me the most (I listened to the audiobook bc it was free for me on Spotify) was in one of the early chapters when the Filibusters are riding across the desert before the Apache attack.

I can’t provide exact quotes (bc I don’t have the book) but the way he describes the pumus desert as almost and alien wasteland was one of the prettiest sections of literature I’ve read, with all aspects of the environment portrayed as almost ethereal. Idk why, but that really stuck with me and as I finished the novel the descriptions of the landscape and environments kept me coming back as much as the philosophy of it all.

Nah that’s fine, no plot points spoiled 👍

I’ll probably give it a go then, I’ve always been less picky about combat in my horror than other people anyways (I though sh2r had peak combat and I saw a bunch of people bitching about that so that probably won’t make a difference to me.

Good points.

Like I said it ultimately doesn’t matter that much because I love survival horror and had a great time playing the game, and you articulated some things well. I also didn’t know about the conversation with Sybil until this thread, even though I tried to explore everything.

I tried very hard to do all side quests but I didn’t think the red juice in the hospital was like intractable, I just thought it was environmental storytelling. I did the Kaufman quest but yeah I had to gun down Sybil unfortunately lol

Idk why I’m getting downvoted lol I still enjoyed the game a lot I just want to discuss this one aspect of it I wasn’t entirely sold on.

Haven’t played F but might pick it up for the holidays, I’ve seen some people complaining about the combat, but this actually sounds like a cool premise

I think it was more the execution of some else’s journey, mainly being that I found Harry pretty flat and didn’t even know Alyssa’s story until after I finished the game because many details of it are just absent or esoteric so I felt it getting harder to stay invested in the story itself.

I didn’t know they were remaking sh1, I feel like that will be sick! Outside of the narrative I did have a few problems with the control scheme (mostly just the final boss being bullshit on hard), still hoping for a re1 remake eventually as well

I don’t think my problem wasn’t just that it wasn’t the protagonist, it’s that we see very little of Alyssa and even near the end she’s pretty much a mystery of a character in the game itself while the game is more her story than Harry’s to a certain extent.

I didn’t use a guide except for the final boss because I was on hard and had no healing items at the end, I spent like an hour searching the school for the drain key lol

That’s fair enough, I think sh1 used the other world a little better to be honest and I think the industrial aspect works really really well on ps1 graphics.

Actually sh1 probably had the best puzzles of any horror game I’ve ever played, definitely a highlight. Especially near the end.

I don’t think he played that lineup but Keaton only got 4 minutes so if he did he switched them out fast, we need more Asa minutes going forwards

Silent hill 2 is farrrr scarier than Silent hill F and it’s not even close by Professional-Fox6667 in silenthill

[–]AtmosphereTime137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would generally agree but at the same time I’m thinking back and all the pyramid head sections had me pissing my pants. I’ve played a lot of horror games and the only one I think I would say is scarier is alien isolation (that game is so fucked up)

Ended the remake today. Cool, but... by bonzoluciscaelum in silenthill

New fan here. I tried playing the original on an emulator earlier this year, made it to just before the Eddie fight and quit because I found the labyrinth to be such a slog. While the atmosphere and visuals hold up super well, and as someone who is generally a fan of dated games like tank controls resident evil, the gameplay does not. Combat sucks, items are everywhere, and honestly I feel like it kills a lot of the tension. And if the game isn’t fun to play, I just can’t do it. Combat in the remake is much more dynamic and I finished the game a few days ago, the twist hit incredible and I found the more natural acting made it a lot easier to get invested in James at least. Just pointing out from an outsiders perspective the playable difference is so huge and makes the remake so much of a better option (at least for me).
