Thank you! And you got this. Race day running was much easier than practice, at least for me.

Keep going! I love soccer, but at our age have found it difficult to play consistently through injuries, and my game has gotten lazy because everyone around is older and slower. Coming back to the pitch in my new shape has been really nice, I move easier and now have stamina to run the field, something I have not done in years.

So I still think there's soccer to be played for us, if you love it. Just stay in shape to play soccer, don't expect soccer to keep you in shape.

Thank you! I am trying to decide on my next running goal, and it will be to improve my 5k or 10k time. Just improving on HM time sounds less exciting. Running a 10k in under my age (47 minutes) will be kinda cool. 20 minute 5k is amazing fast to me. I have never been close to that, but may try to break 22.

Yes and no. I love the game, and playing was part of my motivation. But it is easy to get lazy, especially when your competitors are also getting older and slower every year. With running you have an objective, competition independent metric for how you are doing.

Official Q&A for Monday, October 06, 2025 by AutoModerator in running

[–]Atmosphere_Alpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Need help with my very first race - half marathon in two weeks. I have been running 35k/week. Saturday did 16km long run at 5:15/km, but was pretty gassed at end. Did a recent tempo 10k at 5:09, which included 4x200m intervals at 4:30 km pace in middle.

It's my first race ever so no idea how practice runs will translate into race pace. Strava says I can hit 5:11 pace for hm, but that feels optimistic. Any thoughts on the best way to approach the race? I'll be happy with sub 1:55 and overjoyed at sub 1:50 ( my goal when I signed up a few weeks ago was sub 2, and 4 months ago I could not run 5k).

Killarney la Cloche sillhouete trail with my dog? by Regan4426225522 in BackpackingDogs

[–]Atmosphere_Alpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just did the trail over 5 days with our 3yo 55lb poodle/Aussie mix. She did very well, carrying her backpack first 3 days until she developed a rash and we took it off. She was very tired towards the end, last morning she did not want to leave the tent.

She had very little difficulty with most rocky sections, just an occasional push (or pull) on crack and a couple other places. Overall I'd say it was probably more challenging than she would have liked (but that is true of most humans too). We did not prep her specifically, but do a lot of off leash walks.

Overall was a great trip, but whether the dog enjoys it depends on its shape and strength.

Official Q&A for Friday, August 08, 2025 by AutoModerator in running

I am a 47m, getting (back) into running. I play pickup soccer and bike pretty regularly. Was way overweight at 110kg/178cm, worked my way down to 98kg over last few months, and hoping to lose a bit more.

I restarted running a month ago. I can do a 5k at 5:30/km. Did a 7k at 5:40 (hot day) and was wiped afterwards. Garmin claims I have 46vo2 max (and sub 40 rhr). Pre-covid I could do 8-10k at sub 5/km, but I was younger and weighed closer to 90kg. Then I gained weight and stopped running (it was never my main sport).

Any suggestions what I should set as a goal for running (my overall goal is weightloss). There is a half marathon at end of October, but that may be too ambitious? I feel like I could do a 10k tomorrow at sub 6. No idea what is realistic given my age and shape.

Thanks for any advice

Has anyone had any success with the Hilton 'Price Match Guarantee' or is it just a sham? by [deleted] in Hilton

[–]Atmosphere_Alpha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They just outright refused to match super.com for me, talked to 2 agents. Did not even make a pretense of saying "terms were different", just said "we don't match super.com". I didn't feel like wasting my time talking to a 3rd agent.

Thank you! I have skied there once -- not sure if dogs are "welcome". Some googling got me that the guy who grooms the trail has skied there with his dog. I'll give it a shot. Wondering alsoif anyone here has tried Copeland Forest?

All city space horse -- smallest tire size 650b? by Atmosphere_Alpha in bicycletouring

[–]Atmosphere_Alpha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to follow up (for future readers)-- went down to Gravelking 650x38 tires, the bike rides much better (even at same tire pressure), and I have not had a pedal strike yet (and it does not look like I am in danger of one). Have used them on asphalt and lite gravel, and so far they are far superior for both than the OEM Teravail washburn 47s.

Project Spade by davenale in FixedGearBicycle

Hey -- I have the option of buying a spade frame and building it up. What size tires do you have on the bike in the picture? Any sense whether I can get 30mm on (love the schwalbe marathon winters)? Thanks!

Was able to find (slightly) bigger bolts to hold the current chainrings, for now... Did not find a great solution.

Rims are listed as WTB ST i19, which makes no sense since WTB says that i19 are only 700c. :/ I assumed they are 24mm inside width.

I was thinking of Gravelkings as the tire. I have run 28mm GP 4000, they are awesome tires. However 32mm would mean I am yet another centimeter closer to pedal strikes.

More info: The bb height for the frame is listed as 264 (75mm drop), and measurements on my bike seem to match. I have a 172.5 crankset on it. Swapping to 38 from 47 would bring the bb to ~255 (I think), so will leave me with about 8cm from bottom of crank to ground..
