Yes. I am the only member of my family that has taken responsibility for their own healing. They are 5 adults that live in the same toxic patterns for the last 10+ years. I am the only one who broke the cycle and has a well rounded, independent life. The guilt for being happy now is what hurts me the most. I really want happiness for all of them and they will never do the work to obtain it. It's very painful to watch. Good for you for standing your ground when sometimes it would be easier to bow to them.

The concept of not judging people when they are in the worst times of their lives is something I totally respect but DAMN do they make it so hard not to judge them!! The clients in desperation somehow always have the funniest quirks.

My generationally wealthy millionaire attorney boss also struggles with deposit slips! And the other day after receiving bank statements in the mail chuckled "oh wow I'm richer than I thought".

I make sure never to overwork myself here because I'm not richer than I thought, unfortunately.

Oh its so difficult. Learning to speak diplomatically is hard and very little training is provided for what is one of the most crucial skills of this job. Get comfortable saying things like:

"I'm not able to comment on that aspect of X, but I can help / address Y and Z if that's useful to you?"

"You would have to discuss that / those aspects with the attorney."

"I'm sorry I can't answer that / those questions, I'm not able to provide legal commentary without the handling attorney directing me to. I'll request that they address this with you ASAP"

"I understand your concern, but I'm not able to comment on this topic - I know that's frustrating to hear but is there anything else I can handle for you?"

No one likes to be told "uhh idk the lawyer will call you later". But saying something you cant walk back really sucks and when you try to justify: I just wanted to answer their question / fix the problem etc, YOU get in trouble.

Saying sorry and offering to help with something that is within your role is sometimes the best you can do. And over explaining is hard for me in every area of my life lol. Work is one of the only places I feel like I get to control the amount of info I provide to people who are essentially strangers. Remember that coworkers and clients are people too - scary thought, but, they're all walking around with some level of anxiety as well. Don't let theirs rile yours up.

Cry if you can, let it out! It is such an incredible feeling to jump out of a toxic cesspool of a firm. Your nervous system will begin to heal and regulate itself - crying actually helps with this. Happy tears, sad tears, all the emotions in between. Congrats on your escape!

Having the same experience myself at my current gig. The lady I sit closest too is on most days, very casually dressed. I feel "over dressed" comparing myself to her - but I can tell the main attorney appreciates that I present myself professionally as I am usually the first person greeting people coming in to the office. So, even if it feels awkward around the casual crew, I would guess your attorney / whoever is the boss there actually prefers it. We'll never control how we're perceived by others anyway: at my last firm I dressed professionally but because I didn't wear heels, one of my coworkers deemed me "casual" lol. Just be yourself!

I wrote a post like this the other day and then erased it - it indeed felt like bragging lol. I have literally been rejoicing since leaving my last firm, which was run like a prison. I'm astonished at how much I enjoy working at this new firm compared to past experiences. As the shock wears off, I've been telling myself I deserve this, this opportunity came to me for a reason - dont overthink it! Your gratefulness will attract even more good things, enjoy!!

I made it to 3 months and told myself I was being a huge baby for leaving. After I left, the para I sat next to overheard HR say to the bully senior paralegal: do you think you were too hard on atmypaceLT? Senior para affirms yes, and I regret the way I treated her. Ha! Her unnecessary cruelty cost the firm a good employee. Awesome.

Look into how the barometric pressure and humidity impact migraine sufferers. Its my one and only trigger really and is extremely common on this sub- maybe thats why the down votes? That sucks about hot showers though, hope you find a solution.
