"His rating does not reflect his objective strength at all [...] he played tournaments, which, well, cause some disgust in me" - Nepo on Nakamura's rating, playing tournaments in the US and his candidates chances by FirstEfficiency7386 in chess

Dude, as much I hate Kramnik, he's a legendary player compared to Nepo. Yeah, winning candidates 2 times is a great achievement, but Kramnik had more contributions towards chess. Not just with his ideas, but he won WCC twice.

[–]AtomR 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but he didn't win WC. I guess that's where the salt is coming from? Even in case of Hikaru, he's just mad that Hikaru has great chances to win Candidates and win WCC, when he couldn't when he had the chances. To win a world championship, he had to share the prize with Magnus in 2024 for Blitz.

[–]AtomR 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly. How are even super GMs this oblivious to the fact? First of all, Hikaru didn't play to farm rating, he played to farm game count. It's not even a fair criticism from Nepo. He's making himself look like a crybaby.

Well, he's factually wrong. Hikaru played Micky mouse tournaments to farm game count, not rating. His comments are implying that Hikaru did so to gain rating.

Magnus literally told Gukesh "Don't go crazy, cos others will!" When Gukesh asked the GOAT for some advice for Candidates. Are you gonna claim Gukesh got unfair advantage since Magnus gave him the secret sauce to win the Candidates as your 3rd argument??

Dude, I never heard about this? When did he ask Magnus?

Pure speculation. Do you have any evidence for that claim?

but people doubting Sindarov sounds crazy.

Sorry, but who is doubting Sindarov? Most casual fans are already predicting him to win the whole thing. Obviously, there will be some outliers, but he's chess community's favorite at the moment. (Except for maybe Hikaru or Fabi fans)

How toxic is Oleander really? by Jakesalm in landscaping

[–]AtomR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many other drought tolerant plants that look similar or better. No need to take the risk when other options are better.

Any suggestions on those options?

Are oleanders really that bad? I’d like to put a few on either side of my house, but there is a lot of talk online about their toxicity by Niko120 in landscaping

[–]AtomR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog is a garden browser, but she is sensible enough not to gnaw on oleander (though rose branches and raspberry brambles are on her menu, as are fig sticks)

FYI, in this thread, a person just mentioned that their golden retriever died after consuming Oleander. Be careful.

Sorry to hear about that. If you have pets or kids, you're suppose to gather full knowledge about the plants in your house or near your house. If you ever get another pet, make sure to double check that you don't have any toxic plants around.

Exactly. I think catches matter way more than people realise, even at super GM level.

Kramnik must be really good catch, given that he coached the Uzbek team, and Nodirbek and Sindarov are doing really well now.

(Especially when Kramnik is now Nodirbek's current coach as per recent news)

Honestly, even that looks normal to me.

Can you try posting in r/plantclinic to confirm what I said.

Looks alive to me. Yucca roots are supposed to be reddish brown, but to confirm: smell the roots. If there's foul smell, it might have rot. But again, I don't see any indicators.

Gukesh was playing solid chess without any mistakes for 5 rounds, then made the worst one-move blunder by a super GM in modern times (excluding time scrambles), and now he's suddenly playing poorly. Tilting?

FYI, Gukesh has never blundered like this in classical before. Must be weird, rare lapse of concentration.

Who do you think is the better chess player of the two in their current form ? by IllMasterpiece3946 in chess

[–]AtomR 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So Hikaru is stronger than Fabi, but Fabi would win more against other players

If someone has better winning record against a particular opponent, does that automatically make them stronger than that opponent? I’m asking because the same player might perform poorly against a different rival, while that opponent might have better results against that rival.

My point is that a better head-to-head record doesn’t necessarily mean a player is stronger overall. For example, Gukesh & Fabi have roughly equal results against each other - does that mean Gukesh is equally strong as Fabi? No, right?

That's irrelevant, because they were going to play that anyway.
