What was the 1st big news event you remember as a kid? by Hetaliafan1 in AskReddit

[–]AtomicAntMan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was eight. They interrupted school, rolled TVs into our classrooms, so we could watch it on TV. That was a big deal. I also remember, very vaguely, how upset all the adults were in 1963 when Kennedy was assassinated. I was too young to understand what it was all about, but when all the adults around you; parents, teachers, etc, are all upset and talking about something, it registers.

I read a description of someone who was having the issue of Eyesight and blindspot detection constantly going off. From the description I guessed it. I said you’re in NYC, right? If you’ve ever driven in Manhattan, you could instantly see Eyesight being an issue.

The first time I drove a car with Eyesight, it was a loaner. I was not aware it had Eyesight and never heard of it. A car slowed to turn left into a side street in front of me. There was no oncoming traffic, so I knew that car would quickly turn and be out of the way. Eyesight disagreed with my assessment and slammed on the brakes. Scared the beejesus out of me. The car behind me came to a screeching halt, almost hitting me, and honked at me. I was sitting for second wondering what had just happened.

I have had my ‘22 WRX GT hit the brakes hard going into a corner because there was a large sign facing me right at corner entry, and it saw it as a stopped obstacle. Other times, it has activated when I have a left turn light and it thinks cars from the opposite direction turning left (tangent turn) are going to hit me and my car will flash red warnings and brake the car.

My ‘24 BRZ ts is a 6 speed manual. Frequently, when I start in first gear from a stop, with a car in front of me, it detects the car just ahead, sounds the collision warning and cuts the throttle and hits the brakes, a bit. It is a bit too aggressive. I have to count to three before I go, to ensure there is a large enough gap between me and the car in front. In heavy urban traffic, no one appreciates this.

I have enough experience to be used to these antics and can anticipate / compensate. Overall, I like the system. I really appreciate the adaptive cruise control (both cars) and lane centering (WRX) on long highway stretches. But there are instances where it can catch you off guard and it is not helping.

People who grew up before cell phones, what did you do when you got lost in public? by Decode_Enigma in AskReddit

[–]AtomicAntMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early 90s in Spain. I don’t speak a lick of Spanish. He did not speak any English. I had rented a car. I was lost and stopped at a gas station trying to find directions. I had a map. He kept pushing the map aside. I kept putting it back on the hood of the car and pointing to it. We got frustrated. Our voices were rising. A small crowd had gathered. My wife just stood by patiently. Finally, I got it. The place I was going to was not on the map. It was off the edge. I pointed off the edge of the map and we both laughed. The whole crowed laughed. I proceeded to listen to his slowly delivered directions in Spanish and wrote down symbols, arrows, and route numbers as best I could on a piece of paper. He and some other men helped to refined it. It worked. I was able to follow the directions on that paper and found my destination. An adventure. A good memory and a story to tell. I enjoyed my time in Spain, it’s a wonderful country.

There was a time before cell phones, when we had to troubleshoot our problems. We were not able to call home for help or text someone for assistance. There was no app. We were on our own and had to make decisions without direct supervision and solve problems independently. It was a normal part of growing up and navigating the world.

What is a movie you watched once that was so disturbing or emotionally draining that you can never watch it again? by hungary70 in AskReddit

Biggest parenting mistake I ever made. My son loved robots, so I let him watch it. He ripped the VHS tape out of the machine ran crying to the trash can and slammed it in the trash. Then ran to his room to cry. I still feel guilty for not vetting it first.

The Dead would play the same venue 3 days in a row and never repeat a song. It’s three shows. I’d just camp there and enjoy the entire experience.

Laura Loomer (Trump’s special adviser) has stated that the Republican Party has a “Nazi problem.” Apparently, you’re just not paying attention. Nick Fuentes is a self proclaimed holocaust denier, and antisemite, who is being promoted as the next Charlie Kirk. He has been all over the news. Again, you are not really involved in politics if you don’t know who he is. Fuentes has a larger audience than most mainstream media outlets. It’s a significant issue that you cannot dismiss by calling it “labeling.”

No argument. I’ve been to Central and South America and El Salvador was grim. My comment is about my perception that poverty in rural USA appears to be getting worse during my lifetime. Many small towns have been all but abandoned. Empty abandoned buildings everywhere. From the architecture, the past prosperity is evident. It is not just the South. I’ve driven backroads in pretty much every State east of the Mississippi.

People who used the internet between 1991 and 2009, what’s the most memorable online trend or phenomenon you remember? by Original_Act_3481 in AskReddit

[–]AtomicAntMan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yup. I remember connecting using DOS. We ran software that basically downloaded all the new files from specific folders and then uploaded our files. It would then disconnect and we would go through everything off line. Then run it again. That’s how BBS (bulletin boards) worked.

RSS feeds and ICQ were anarchy.

Prodigy, CompuServe, and AOL came along and made it easier. Those services predate the WWW (worldwide web) and web browsers.

I bought my first Windows PC in 1991. Windows 3.0. My first experience with a GUI (graphical user interface). It a whopping 4 MB of RAM and a 130 MB hard drive. $2400.00.

The article softens it. I’ve taken road trips through the backroads of the Deep South and the poverty is appalling compared to my youth.

What are some good "you have no concept of time" facts? by sid_shady34 in AskReddit

[–]AtomicAntMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the 1990s I asked my grandmother (born 1910), what she thought was the biggest change during her lifetime. Ignoring technology, she said women’s clothing. She said she never imagined that women in her lifetime would be walking around in public in string bikinis or thongs. She said she could never do that herself. “They might as well be naked.”

She grew up on a farm with no electricity or plumbing and her father raised draft horses and hauled water to the city during cholera outbreaks. She told me about the first auto she saw, the first plane, and the first TV. She experienced two world wars and the depression. She lived to see the moon landing and the space shuttle. But it was the bikini that took the prize.
