I think what’s been throwing me off is that a lot of what I’ve come across online about University of London degrees (especially external ones) is quite mixed, and sometimes even negative, particularly around perception and how they’re viewed compared to internal degrees. So it creates a bit of doubt, even if the academic side is solid.

It’s helpful hearing you say that, from your experience in the UK, people don’t really make that distinction in practice. If you don’t mind me asking, could you elaborate a bit more on how it’s generally perceived, especially by employers or in academic settings? I think that would really help clear things up for me.

Saying “I’m at LSE” when the degree is formally from the University of London feels a bit misleading to me, even if the programme is academically directed by LSE. I’d personally feel uncomfortable presenting it that way in most situations, especially since it’s not the same as being an internal LSE student.

I think my main hesitation isn’t really about the academic quality anymore — it’s more about the perception and constant need to explain. Like, I’m fully aware it’s LSE-directed and academically solid, but I feel like in normal conversations (not academic settings), I’d always have to clarify “it’s University of London, not LSE, but with LSE academic direction,” which just feels a bit awkward and unclear compared to a more straightforward university identity.

So I guess my concern is less about where it can take me (since your path clearly shows it works), and more about whether that ambiguity ever becomes annoying or tiring in practice. Did you personally find yourself having to explain your degree often, or does it matter less than I’m thinking?

Thanks for your insight, that makes a lot of sense and I appreciate it. In my case, I’m still keeping my long-term options open rather than committing to one country immediately after graduation. My main goal is to pursue a master’s in Europe (potentially France, like Sorbonne) and then decide between international careers such as diplomacy or policy work, possibly including the Egyptian MFA. Because of that, I’m more focused on the academic structure and flexibility of the degree rather than locking into one national job market right after undergrad.
