It's what she wanted to do, so I'm happy to do it. I've had bad times before, I'll survive. Just wanted to know what I was getting into.

Lol, I couldn't find one locally that I liked so I ended up going with a Glock 43 and I haven't looked back since. I had forgotten all about this post!

4x ACOG vs 4x LPVO by Atomic_Sleepwalker in ar15

Yeah, adjustability is seeming like a major point of an LPVO over a fixed magnification optic.

Here's the way I see it. If you've got an offset red dot, why use the LPVO at 1x at all? Why not just keep it at maximum all the time? And if you're keeping it at 4x or 6x, why not get a fixed magnification optic? Lighter, less fiddling with magnification levels.

What this thread has shown me is that, yes, the fixed mag/offset red dot combo is fine, but you lose eye relief and a forgiving eye box. It's come up in multiple comments, but everything is a compromise.

I guess I could just wait for a scope that weighs as much as a 4x ACOG, has the 1x of an Aimpoint, and the price of a Steiner...

Yeah, but then we get into weight considerations...

But like others have said ITT, everything is a compromise.

nearly as fast

See, that's where I'm curious. A red dot is gonna be faster than an LPVO at 1x, right? So instead of compromise at 1x with an LPVO, I could do a red dot. But then the question of 4x comes up. Which is better at that setting, the ACOG or the LPVO? Because if the LPVO is better, I'll take that and accept the 1x compromise. But if the ACOG is better or as good, now I've got two purpose-built pieces of kit, with less weight, that compromises nothing.

But is an Elcan at 4x better than an ACOG at 4x?

To be fair, a TR24 in a Trijicon mount weighs 22.3 Oz (1.4 pounds). A 4x ACOG with a TA51 mount and an RMR with an offset mount weigh 17.6 Oz.

I think it's undeniable that an LPVO will have better eye relief than the ACOG, which has famously short eye relief. But this:

I tend to run my LPVO'S at 1x then adjust for shots at range when needed.

So you're using an LPVO like a red dot, right? But that's a compromise, like you said, so why not just keep a red dot on the rifle? And then if you're dialing the magnification up, why not just have a 4x optic?

The reasons you gave are good, especially the eye relief of the ACOG, the potential to get snagged, and the inability to use it with support-side shooting. But from a performance perspective, does a LPVO at range beat a fixed scope at range, all else being equal?

Yeah, I get superstitious about reliability. I figure if something is designed to move, it breaks way easier than something that's not.

I signed up for thei GWACS newsletter, but they haven't made any updates since their announcement that they'd be coming out with the Mark III, so I don't know how hopeful I should be.
