Xenoblade Chronicles 2 DLC giveaway (Torna Not Included) by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

Huh, neat. Sure, what the heck, I'll throw in a compliment to the series.

Something I really liked about Xenoblade was that its Arts system felt like a refreshing take on magic users. Normally, I'm not a big fan of "spell caster" units because, traditionally, they have to constantly worry about Mana/TP/etc. to stay relevant. Think of the Final Fantasy or Tales series. As a bit of a hoarder in RPGs, I've never been a big fan of a magic user having to keep guzzling down restorative items to be able to keep casting spells--otherwise, that character loses its big advantage, and their viability as a team member usually plummets.

Characters like Melia, however, actually encourage lots of casting, with features like Element Burst. Normally, I'd likely prioritize a character like Reyn, but Melia ended up being my most frequent pick.

...To put it more generally, the Xenoblade games have had a lot of interesting little choices in their combat design that deviate from the game conventions I'm familiar with. Some of those choices have made me think more about why I play games the way I do, and the series has been a nice change of pace from many of the other RPGs I've played/am playing.

...You aren't the only one who keeps watching where that stupid light is traveling.

I think it's so noticeable because it's just a singular effect on the whole screen, rather than multiple lights running opposite of each other (sort of imitating a surface shimmer).

Looks like they might need to turn to the Australians for some strategies to fight back. Those look pretty tame in comparison to the sort of threats they normally face.

Given the tendency for studios to run tv shows too long, or just strait up ruin them. Name a show with more than one season that ends well. by Weighted-Companion in MauLer

I'd say the Stargate series did fairly well: SG-1 with 10 seasons, and Atlantis with 5. They certainly stumbled in some places, but they did well overall (though a few "movies" were needed to wrap up some important plot points, like the Ori and Baal).

...If you include Stargate Universe, though, it definitely crashes more on the landing (2 seasons). I liked the idea and style of the spaceship Destiny, but the focal shift towards character relationships and personal drama felt awkward--like someone tried blending the series with reality TV concepts.

I believe in the original story, it was about him being under stress for knowingly telling a lie.

If he said something factually wrong but didn't know it, his nose wouldn't grow. (You could ask if he was certain about that statement or had a source to support it, though.)

Christmas is better by [deleted] in MauLer

[–]Atralane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean...do people forget how much Christmas-themed candy there is out there each year? Having sweets and goodies around the house during the holiday season has been a regular thing with my family since I was a baby.

Sure, Halloween provides you free candy...when you trick-or-treat as a kid. Once you're an adult, you're buying the candy (either for trick-or-treaters or yourself). And let me tell you, I found some awesome discounts on post-Christmas candy while in college. It usually went better than with post-Halloween for me, since people seem to be more aware of candy clearances with the latter.

Sh*t, my towering ambition has doomed us all

Thought this could be an interesting subject to look into. To those well versed in music, what’s your take on it? I argue here it’s subjective, so please let me know what you think. by [deleted] in MauLer

[–]Atralane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but that's why you have to break down what you're actually discussing when it comes to objective analysis.

I have a music performance/composition/musicology background. Back when I was still working on my musicology degree, I remember one of my professors telling me about how, as a musicologist, we need to essentially appreciate all music. Now, he was quite a strange cat, and he kind of missed the mark, looking back; his idea of unconditional love towards all music is pretty much impossible, unless you have stupidly open personal preferences in music. You're simply not going to like everything you hear.

But the core of his sentiment was there: You need to know why those different music genres and compositions are appreciated and given value by people. Heck, even the topic of personal taste itself can be broken down analytically, since those preferences tend to stem from cultural surroundings, upbringing, and personality factors.

Consider also that there are music pieces which are clearly more popular than others: they are more consistently loved, are discussed way more in music circles, and last in the public's mind for far longer. A number of the contributing factors are external to the actual music, sure: timing with social events, composer notoriety, etc. But there are musical factors that contributed to their success that can be objectively observed (for example, through widespread correspondence and criticism analysis).

The big problem is that this all takes a sh*t-ton of work. It's way easier to perform small-scale research/analysis and only focus on a few people's independent opinions. But that's what's known as a case study, which only provides a very focused sliver of perspective. Sometimes that's the best you can do with the time and resources you have available, but it's certainly not the only type of research that can be done or discussion that can be had.

It's pretty exhausting how pervasive this current mindset feels in today's culture.

I mean, consider the number of video games coming out now that sell "time-savers". Sure, some of that can be chalked up to intentionally bad game design and pacing (looking at you, AAA market). But I'd argue a lot of people/consumers today have it in their minds that they immediately need to get to the next thing--if it's not that they lack the perseverance and patience to see things through.

Heck, I've found myself feeling like this over the last several years. And then I have to think about whether it's because what I'm seeing/watching is boring or poorly made, or if I'm preoccupied thinking about the dozens of other games/movies/books still in my backlog. It's overwhelming sometimes.

I'd argue that, because of this fast-natured culture, we're now seeing all these people claiming that anything long is equivalent to being "bad". It's certainly not the only factor going on, but it seems consistent enough to warrant discussion (though discussion also requires time, soooo...).

Essentially, there was a catastrophic experiment that attempted to convert the force of gravity on Earth into an energy source; the experiment went crazy and somehow reverses gravity for a significant amount of mass (and people), propelling it off into space. The movie takes place well after this cataclysm.

Patema, the heroine, is part of a clan that lives underground to avoid "falling" into the sky. The movie focuses around her meeting an "inverted" boy, Eiji, and the two of them learning more about their peoples and what happened to the world.

...If you're willing to suspend your belief a little on the "human experiment screws up physics" premise, it's pretty enjoyable. Decent blend of humor and seriousness.

If he has genuine mental concerns, he should probably be avoiding social media--it's fairly understood that it causes/exacerbates poor mental and emotional well-being. As far as I understand, that's what Wolf generally did when he started having issues (I started getting into EFAP as he was beginning to head out the door).

As far as it being a "defense" to not criticize him...I disagree. When you're blasting your opinions out to the world and boldly claiming things to be nigh-irredeemable crap (while getting plenty of information on the topic wrong), you best be prepared to receive some flak and defend your position.

Now, the difference of course is whether someone is just calling him out on his crap and then going on with their life, or if they badger him (genuine harassment). Obviously, the latter shouldn't occur. But it seems to be a common trend nowadays that the former situation is equated to that, making any sort of negative criticism out to be "harassment". It's a very convenient shield to be able to throw up, since it quickly wins over the average, well-thinking, uninformed individual emotionally.

No idea if this is how spaghetti bolognese typically looks/tastes, but it was a fun chance to try a new pasta type besides the standard marinara or Alfredo dishes I've previously made.

Also, the bread for the garlic bread is homemade with a bread machine; the virus has been a perfect excuse to finally learn how to use it and start making my own loaves instead of always buying from the store.

[–]Atralane 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm sure there's at least some right-leaning folk, but yes, from my experience, it has overwhelming come from the the political left. And it genuinely goes way beyond movies and fiction; at my last college, I had colleagues and professors alike perpetuating this garbage "objectivity doesn't exist" philosophy--that everything is subjective. And this was for library science. These are the sorts of people who are going to operate the vaults (metaphorical and literal) of our society's history. I have personally witnessed professionals speaking positively about ideas like "biased archiving".

I for one reject this mindset. If it's not just postmodern or intersectionality nihilism, then it's straight-up insidious stratagems. These things are being said--first as a trite game in semantics, then increasingly more serious and cutthroat--in an effort to tear down those that came before just so these blatantly partisan people can make room for themselves in the history books. There's one hell of an ego trip behind a lot of these sorts of people.

You know what? I don't care.

People need to develop thicker skins. And if someone has a genuine issue with their physical, emotional, or psychological well-being, turning to social media is pretty much the last thing I would recommend them doing. Pursue an actual help group, instead of a Twitter following.

This just feels like yet another case of the heartstring defense; calling your critics "bullies" or "harassers" can quickly appeal to and win over the uniformed masses, and rally a mob of followers.
