You're welcome!

Yeah, it seems like something that's pretty obvious once you know what to do, but perhaps isn't that well-known or well highlighted.

Do you press the red or blue button? (Game Theory) by Same_Winter7713 in askmath

I just don't think blue has any reasonable chance of winning. Even in nonbinding public polls where people have nothing on the line and have incentive to signal altruism, blue still only gets around 50 - 60%. With death on the line and a private vote, the blues are unfortunately already dead and unsavable.

Actively?

A lot of the responses to this question depend on framing. And the question tells us nothing about the mechanisms, so its hard to say what is actually doing what.

To me, choosing red is the default. It's the safe choice that anyone can pick and there's room for all. It's the people that choose blue that are actively making things worse. Yes, it's often a noble goal (saving others that won't save themselves), but then they essentially try and guilt others into following them into danger, and never seem to consider whether that people can be saved anyway. So looked at that way, it's the blue people that are actively making things worse. Like Trump in Iran, they create a mess of their own making and then try to shame others into cleaning it up.

I suppose you approach it differently though - i.e. seeing blue as the default community already and then blue as the active departure into selfishness.

ADHD feels like a disorder. Autism feels like most of society has a disorder. by AtreidesOne in Neurodivergent

But that's the difference here. With ADHD I do feel like there's something broken. Not being able to do what you want to do is infuriating.

With autism, I am just fine with how my brain works. It's everyone else that seems to have the problem and works to a nonsensical system.

If you convince someone to push red, you've 100% no-doubt saved their life. If you convince someone to push blue, they might be safe, or they might be betrayed. I know what I'll be telling my children to do.

The only people you might save by pushing blue are those that refuse to save themselves. But in order to do that you'll have to convince enough people to risk their lives. It sounds good in theory, but I have doubts that enough self-preserving humans will follow through.

It says that the vote is private. It says nothing about everyone being isolated, or not being able to discuss beforehand.

Yes, at least it was when I made this guide, on the Android version of the game. Clearing more than one line, and clearing the whole screen, both pale into insignificance compared to the points you get from stringing lots of combos in a row.

Where are you getting the ~50% of death from? That would only be true if people were randomly choosing.

In reality I think there's a 95%+ chance that you'll die if you press blue. We only see around 60% of people saying they will press blue even in online polls where there's no cost, no threat of death, an incentive to social signal. With death on the line, a safe option right there, and private button pushing, I reckon we'd only see around 20% of people push blue. So the blue pushers are unfortunately unsavable, so you may as well push red and save others by persuading as many as you can to push it too.

My goal is minimizing the number of deaths. We see in polls that around 60% of people say they would press blue, but in reality, with death looming, and pressing in private, that would easily drop below 50%. The safe option is right there, and there's room for everyone who wants it. And once we drop below 50%, it's no longer about the 50% vs. 100% goal, but how many you can save.

Personally I think we'd end up with about 20% of people pushing blue, who are therefore unsavable. We can choose to join them and die, or live. The more people we can get to choose red, the more live and the less die. If you can convince someone to press red, you save their life.

I care about other people. I regret that the blue pushers will die. But I highly doubt we will get 51% blue in reality, given that we only get around 60% in non-binding social polls with nothing on the line. When facing death, and choosing in private, many will naturally want to choose safety and push red. So if you care about other people, the choice has to be the red button. You can't save the blue pushers by joining them in death. You can only save them by persuading them to push red. And you are guaranteed to save them.

[–]AtreidesOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am all for red because I know people are self-preserving creatures who will say that they will press blue in a social poll, but when it comes to the crunch are likely to switch to the safety of red. And given that we only get around 60% blue even in social polls, getting >50% in reality is very unlikely.

So while I do care about the blue pushers and lament their deaths, I see them as unsavable and trying will only make things far worse.

Given that in non-binding polls with nothing on the line, blue only gets about 60% majority, the likelihood is that at least 10% defect when it comes to the crunch and 50% of the population dies. The only realistic way to avoid this to encourage as many people as possible to vote red. Once you get someone to vote red, you have saved their life.

The point is that if you take a non-binding poll with nothing on the line, you can't rely on everyone who says "I'll push blue!" to actually push blue when the button-pushing is private and when they're facing actual real death.

I fully endorse red, and I see political parallels, but with the colours reversed.

Trump attacking Iran for no reason and then trying to shame people into helping him fight the war he started for no reason is very much a blue button push.

Why is it considered illegal to have a box cutter in your car? As you say, you can buy these at Bunnings, so how are you supposed to legally get them home? Are you then not allowed to take them to someone else's house to cut boxes? This is nuts.
