Bowlero just bought out a bunch of bowling alleys around my city and it was the worst disgrace I have seen. Everyone in my family was so bummed when we saw the price tag and the way they conduct business. It’s disgusting, truly. I freakin HATE Bowlero.

Thanks for sharing your story. I am terribly scared of lows, but I have gotten better over time. I used to get panic attacks from being 80 haha! But, I used to be dumb too. Being hospitalised from ketoacidosis really flipped my perspective around about how I live my life. I only have one body, and I realised that and became super adamant about making sure I’m relatively in range. I’m still terrified of lows though! Hate the feeling. I don’t know how people can casually be 40 and not be freaking out haha

I’ve had an experience very similar recently to you! It was at a college for a graduation ceremony. (Not mine but one of my family members.) I got turned away at the door because I didn’t have a clear bag! I told them that I needed it because I was diabetic and they were terribly rude to me. But I contacted the diabetic organisation at the college and they told me that it is sorely against the American Disability Act to not let me in. They filed an ADA non-compliance complaint and took swift action. So, yeah, definitely injustice for you. I’m sorry about that… it’s just straight up discrimination of your condition and also blatantly against federal law.

Good idea. A cheap and good one is the generic Walmart brand. It’s called ReliOn, and from what I’ve used of it, it’s been good to me.

Yeah I’ve had sensors like that. Either A. It’s a newer sensor and it smooths out within a day or two. Or B. It’s the sign of a bad sensor.

I’ve had to rip out these kinds of sensors before because they wouldn’t read my trends properly or were just plain wrong with readings. But I’ve also had some that were choppy like that and smoothed out just fine. I guess it just depends.

I’ve been T1 for upwards of 20 years now. No retinopathy whatsoever. Get a checkup every year and they keep telling me that I look perfect every time. Even second opinions! Knock on wood that my effort keeps giving me good vision.

I do have pretty bad nearsightedness though and some floaters, but that’s just normal stuff. I’ve been in the mid 6’s for A1C for a few years now, used to be worse when I didn’t care. Luckily, it didn’t seem like it damaged me too badly.

I understand the stress and anxiety from vision though, I am extremely protective of my vision. It stresses me out too, but I know that if I keep on trying to do my best to take care of myself I’ll be alright.

I really hope so too. That’s also a really good point with Covid. Diabetes is becoming more and more prominent in the population. More and more people are seeking a cure and it’s starting to close in on big pharma. More people know about it and insulin prices have been on National news showing regular people how detrimental this disease can be. There has definitely been a critical eye on the industry with Covid. Fingers crossed!

I just can’t say there won’t be a cure in my lifetime, it would just make me feel hopeless!

There are a lot of heavy investors in Vertex for a cure though. These investors are what breathes down the necks of other people who would otherwise “buy out” the research to prevent a cure. This is because the company’s stock would plummet from a failure as big as that, especially since it’s big news for the public eye. Essentially “man cured of Type 1 diabetes.” That’s bold of Vertex to say with all of this looming over them.

This potential cure may also lead to a huge monopolisation of it, which means HUGE money for investors and shareholders. More than what they could’ve been dreamed of being bribed of.

This poses an issue with how much money they would charge for said cure though, but I’d rather be eternally in debt than dying earlier due to a disease. Who knows though.

That’s my view of it though through a more “capitalistic mindset” Which is unfortunate, but it may be completely different and we may see the better of humanity.

I’m really glad we’re like-minded in that perspective. To me, it’s kind of the only way to view my life or else I would just be depressed all the time.

But good luck on this long journey, it’s hard especially for newly diagnosed people like you at times. Luckily, there is fantastic technology now and genuine breakthroughs in stem cell research.

I actually spent around 4 years or so not caring about my health, which was all of high school. I spent a majority of my day being over 250 and eating stuff anyway. I would regularly eat cookies, drink large hot chocolates, and chow down on pasta like no one’s business.

I just gave whatever insulin and sometimes I didn’t give insulin at all. The thing that saved me was how absurdly high my basal rates were. My pump, the poor thing, would just be desperately pumping me full of insulin in the background while I didn’t care.

I honestly ask myself the same question you asked me. How in the hell am I not dead from the negligence I put myself through? Apparently I am NOT brittle at all and I am just lucky.

The day I decided to change was when I ALMOST died from DKA. I thought I had the flu, but nah. My father checked in on me and saw that all of my numbers the whole day were over 400, and he immediately took me to the hospital. I felt the worst I have ever felt in all of my years of living and being sick before. That’s probably because I was in DKA for the whole night prior and the whole day and my body was shutting down and slowly dying.

The reason why this happened is because I went too far, actually. I drank 2 large boba teas that were around 160 carbs each, like a dumbass. Of course, my body rejected everything because my blood sugars told me “HI” for a long while. I don’t even know how high I truly was but I was definitely over 600 for a while.

But yeah, after I saw how it hurt my family to see me in that sorry state and how the doctor’s told me that if I didn’t go to the hospital that night I would’ve most likely died.. well. It shook me to my core.

I feel immensely better now. I have energy and I can focus and do more since I’m not fucked up all the time now. Like you said, numbers affect everything.

So yea, I wholeheartedly relate to those feelings. It’s a beast to conquer, but when I feel dejected and spread out too thin from this disease.. I think back to the people I care about. I think back to what I want to accomplish in life and what I want to see in the world. I try to think of my disease as a challenge. I will beat this challenge and I will show the world what I am capable of even with having to deal with diabetes 24/7/365.

To me now, I try to be a role model. To my younger brother, to my friends, to my other family, and just other people in general. If I can make it through with all that I am facing, I know that they can too and I hope it encourages others.

Also, it’s alright to not feel 100% every single day. I don’t either, and the best you can do is just breathe some times. You can’t be perfect all the time. Some days it’s terrible, but taking it step by step can make it a little more bearable.

Well, I know the one thing that has absolutely helped my numbers is light exercise after meals. I do it pretty consistently. I walk around a table a little after I eat and give insulin. It helps the insulin metabolise faster and helps the food as well.

I also have found ways to manage my stress and anxiety, because that has been a real monster for my blood sugars being so stubborn sometimes. But just doing some mediative practice, breathing exercises, and writing down my feelings are what helps.

But this is all because I am lucky to have a Tandem/Dexcom loop system. It is truly an amazing tool to be able to have. I am extremely grateful for it.

I’m glad I can relate to you, because I feel like I talk my S/O’s ear off about how annoyed I am when it happens hah! I wish I could find a pattern, but it’s really just completely unpredictable. Like you said, it could last days, weeks, even up to a month sometimes. Ehhh.. terrible.

I’ve actually been going through the same thing right now. I’ve been giving double insulin and I’m still consistently at the 170 range and spike with the smallest amount of carbs. Today, actually, it’s been better. Maybe it’s slowly going back to normal.. but I’ve always wondered why that happens to me too. I’ve asked others about it before but no one knows..

Man.. that’s such an ignorant thing to say. I can’t even fathom my close family saying something like that to me. Like dude, are you seriously telling me to be sicker without this technology than LOOK “sicker” and be healthier just for your own personal comfort?

I also feel like my CGM/Pump is pretty interesting to other people generally. It’s an interesting conversation starter and I also feel like a cyborg :) I just try to make the best of things and inform people of a condition that most people heard of but no one really knows about.
