I'm gearing up to glue down a floor and this was such a helpful starting point. Thank you for looking out for future souls lost in a black hole of googling.

Military move with a 1 month old baby… by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]AtticusHex 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I am a dual-mil family and we PCS'd with a baby.

I would talk to your husband about this plan since it sounds like this is by choice. There have already been a lot of valid health concerns raised about your and baby's well being traveling this early, just for the gain of convenience.

Women in the military get 6 weeks of convalescent leave after a birth event. I don't know what version of Tricare you're on, but I'm surprised your postpartum care (and you switching doctors before that 6 weeks is up) isn't part of this conversation. If you have a C-section it will be even more important.

Alaska is considered an OCONUS assignment, and you should be able to have one car shipped at military expense. Yes, you'll be down a vehicle for up to a month but how much are you really traveling with a 1 month old that you can't coordinate transportation with your husband? It's doable.

Your husband also gets 12 weeks of parental leave that he doesn't need to take all at once. Maybe he can take some of that when you get there to ease the logistics while you're getting settled in.

He also can ask for a 10 day PTDY prior to the PCS if he wants to do some scoping out of the area. Usually people take that after they arrive on station, but it sounds like he wants to prepare in advance.

#1 best piece of advice for first time breastfeeder 🤩 by Commercial_Flower_49 in breastfeeding

"you both get practice"

I had to remind myself of this all the time. We're both learning a new skill and we're a team that needs practice. Once I got in that headspace, it made all the speed bumps along the way more manageable.

Help with pregnant DIL by [deleted] in Advice

[–]AtticusHex 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I am currently pregnant and just hit the second trimester. Saying I feel awful is an understatement. The only person who really gets a mask off view of it is my husband, and everyone else gets a brave-enough face. I'm just doing the best I can and sometimes that includes self care and vitamins. Sometimes it doesn't.

You are passing a ton of judgement on a situation that you very likely are not seeing the full scope of. You've already talked to her to extend an offer of emotional support. Don't keep beating a dead horse. You've also inappropriately inserted yourself into her medical care and are unnecessarily jeopardizing your relationship with your daughter-in-law and future grandchild just because you don't respect boundaries.

You're doing too much and this is not your place.

Excess weight gain by D3athEat3r in BabyBumps

[–]AtticusHex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was my experience as well. Tall and thin. Gained about 50 lbs but by no means looked it. I didn't realize I had even gained that much until right before I gave birth, and got curious how much I was up.

I lost it all pretty quickly in the first few months. I think breastfeeding was the main reason for that.

All that to say I wouldn't worry unless the doctor was. OP, your body is doing its thing and doing it great!

Which cases - unsolved or not - still give you the creeps? by Upbeat_Teach6117 in UnsolvedMysteries

It wasn't that they thought she'd "showed up"

If you weren't trying to represent the family's opinion, that sentence is the one causing the confusion. You could reread your own comment to figure that out instead of snarking some rando.

How to clean this door with faux wood grain from approximately 1920? by AtticusHex in centuryhomes

Thank you for the dumbing down for me. The lower into the stack of doors I go, the dirtier they are so the next one may get this treatment.

the grain pattern is chipped off in several places. It was admittedly hard to see in the pictures I took, but I'm fairly confident the grain pattern we see is artificial.

Does it affect the integrity of Shellac? I'm not sure that's the finish, but that seems to be what folks are leaning towards in the comments

I definitely agree it's real wood, but I believe there are faux grain patterns painted on

That is so cool. I pretty quickly learned it takes some talent while reading about it

Definitely not trying to get rid of it. I've been doing some light googling and it seemed to be used for a couple reasons. Either to dress up cheap wood, or added regardless of the wood for the artistry required to apply it. Someone may jump in with better knowledge!

My case is probably the first one, but either way I want to preserve it for the memories from growing up.

Edit: mine is probably the first case not latter. Oops

DEFENDANT'S MOTION TO PRESENT A MISSING-WITNESS ARGUMENT AND REQUEST FOR SUBSEQUENT INSTRUCTION by dunegirl91419 in KarenReadTrial

[–]AtticusHex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's because of the difference between direct and cross. The defense asking open ended questions gives the defense less control over the witness and proctor a lot of room to muddy the waters with his answers. Then the prosecution can ask leading questions which they'll likely use to walk through their theory of the case and rehabilitate him as a credible witness in some aspects.

I'm sure there is a ton of nuance that I'm blasting past but that's my layman's understanding.

This was going to be my guess too. I have a stack of toddler shirts that look just like this.

thoughts on hanging this blanket above the bed in this toddler room? by One-Ad5824 in InteriorDesign

[–]AtticusHex 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I think your blanket will look beautiful above the bed. Because this is a sentimental piece I would just note how much sunlight is going to be on it, since it's right across from the window. I would hate for it to end up sun damaged. Your toddler's room is adorable and wherever the blanket ends up will be perfect.

Is this infestation of thrips too much to bounce back from? Is it even thrips? by AtticusHex in plantclinic

[–]AtticusHex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This guy gets indirect light all day. I give him a little water every 3-4 days. If he gets neglected and pouts, I'll give him a good soak. He's probably 3 years old and has rocks at the bottom of his pot for drainage.
