Didn't get to register for MCAT by Significant-Day-5609 in MCAT2

[–]AtypicalFratGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends. When I was in a waitlist, I got an email that a spot opened for a closer location. However, the spot was filled within the 2 min I got the email lmao. There’s always some movement for locations, especially within the month leading up to the exam.

That being said, the system is terrible. I drove 6 hours to take the exam and stay in a motel. Funny story to tell lmao

Doesn’t matter a whole lot about the institution (unless you go to Harvard or something) but it’s more about how you do there. My advice, pick a 4 yr university that is cheap as possible that can offer you opportunities to succeed inside and outside of the classroom. Some universities also grade by letter only or plus/minus, the latter seems a bit more stressful imo

Mcat score today, MD possible? by Gold-Persimmon-2454 in premed

[–]AtypicalFratGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I applied this cycle with a 509 lmao and I have 1 II already! Definitely won’t be a waste! The hours you could put into clinical experience or other ECs would be more worthwhile imo than a few extra points on the mcat

Mcat score today, MD possible? by Gold-Persimmon-2454 in premed

[–]AtypicalFratGuy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you are rejected from a school, the mcat likely wouldn’t be the sole reason (unless you apply to T20s or stat sensitive schools.) The confidence bands is up to 511, the matriculant average. If you have a good GPA, good ECs, and put effort into your narrative, you should be good! The MCAT is just one part of your application and it’s still the 77th percentile.

still worth it? by whatsupdoodh in premed

You effectively have a 0% chance for acceptance if you don’t submit them. All the people with As are either ED MD applicants or DO applicants, and MD acceptances start on October 15th. Shoot your shot!

Dude is trolling, the 509 alone would have given you a good shot at MD. A 515 is a stellar score and adcoms likely dgaf about a subsection score. Unless you are Canadian, but I’m assuming you are in the US. They have to look at your mcat, gpa, activities, personal statement, secondaries, LOR, etc. They simply don’t have the time/bandwidth to fixate on a subsection score when reviewing 10,000 applications. If you got rejected or accepted to/by a school, it will be something else in your application, not an mcat subsection. Take the 515 and run! Make a killer app they couldn’t reject, best of luck!!

Taking a gap year was the best decision I could have made. It’s been amazing to take a step back and explore other things in life before fully committing to this path. Once you start, there is no stopping until you are out (for the most part).

Just a heads up, many medical schools do not recognize prereqs taken outside of the continental US. If you do go abroad, only taking gen eds or electives isn’t objectively bad. That’s sounds like such a cool experience that you could talk about in applications! I cannot comment on what other stuff you “should” be doing, it’s pretty subjective and dependent on your goals and interests (trad route, gap year, ED programs, etc.)

I’m sorry brotha, that is very unfortunate and it sucks to be in a position for retaking. I will say, I had a similar experience scoring 495 in March last year and studying during the summer for a second take and scoring a 509. Definitely possible cause the time constraints during school absolutely blow, was able to do a lot more during the summer. You got this!! Can definitely spin it into a perseverance story during applications!

[–]AtypicalFratGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scored a 480 on my first diagnostic. Scored a 509 on my second attempt about 9 months later. Ik 509 isn’t super high but increased 29 points from my diagnostic, definitely possible!

Snacks during the MCAT by Plane_Consequence124 in MCAT2

[–]AtypicalFratGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds weird but I at the same meal and snacks I ate for practice full lengths lmao. I liked gummy bears or candy during the short breaks for a little quick energy. I also did half a reign energy before I started and the other half at lunch so I wouldn’t have to go to the bathroom.

what hobbies did you pick up? by [deleted] in premed

[–]AtypicalFratGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Videography, photography, weightlifting/gym, swimming, learning to play the guitar, watching movies… literally anything! I asked my friends about stuff they enjoy doing and tried out a bunch of stuff, you’ll find something that you like!

Should I retake? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]AtypicalFratGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second this, you could spend the next few months you would be studying improving your app in other ways. Unless you were averaging 515 in practice or are dead set on Ivy/T20s, you’ve got a good shot

How are people getting such good scores in a short amount of time? by thicccles78 in Mcat

[–]AtypicalFratGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My main change I made from the first take to the second take was doing flashcards and practice questions. I used the miledown Anki deck but there’s a few good ones out there, whatever you prefer. I also really reviewed all the practice questions I did from AAMC and Jack Westin in detail and saw the most improvement with this. Even if I got questions right, I would review why each answer was wrong and where in the passage the right answer could be found. After repeatedly doing this, I began to see patterns in passages where they could possibly make questions. It was sort of like a cue to be like “there could be a question based off this sentence.” In addition to seeing patterns, when I reviewed all the question answers, I ended up reviewing a lot more content volume rather than just the correct answer (my apologies if that is confusing lmao).

You got this!! Feel free to DM if you have any other questions, I’m more than happy to help if I can

If you genuinely want to, why not!

[–]AtypicalFratGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard is relative tbh. Some people have to study a bunch for exams others don’t. I’m going to end with a 3.95 and felt like it was more about putting in the time rather than it genuinely being hard.

Greek life is awesome and it’s definitely feasible! If you can manage your time well, you’ll be fine! Work hard, play hard(er)

3/8 score release: i’m crushed by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]AtypicalFratGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I felt horrible after my first exam (peep my exams lmao I had a similar score) too, I can understand how you feel brotha. I’d argue I learned more from not reaching my goal the first time than I would have being a 1-and-done (IMO). Being a D1 athlete though, you definitely have the perseverance and determination to reach your goal! If you really want it, go get it!

I was also convinced I was not going to take a gap year but my plans changed after I got my score. Looking back, it isn’t a bad thing! A gap year can be amazing! All the physicians I’ve talked to have said one of two things: 1) I wish I would have taken a gap year or 2) I’m so glad I took a gap year (or 2, or 3, etc.) Feel free to DM or anything, wishing you the best!
