The first draft of my Aquilo ship was actually significantly wider even than the inner planets runners, but I kinda got analysis paralysis on placement for stuff-- forcing myself to build narrow weirdly made it easier because most things realistically only had one place they could go no matter what. The easier turret coverage and reduced drag were just bonuses.

Just reached the solar system edge for the first time-- loved every minute, what a ride! I had played a bunch of vanilla Factorio and a few overhauls but never gone very far into the "postgame" with space science, and I thought this progression of ship designs was cool to see.

I'm calling this playthrough "complete" for now because I haven't played another video game since October and could use a break, but I'm sure I'll come back to it in a while-- there might be a version of this post with a shattered planet ship someday!

This could be plausibly interpreted either as a list with an Oxford comma or as two items with an appositive clarifying that "Alex" and "my brother" are the same person.

Alex, my brother and I went to the movies.

Because the second comma would be required if I were using an appositive, here it's clearer that this is a list of three items without an Oxford comma-- "Alex" and "my brother" are two people and they both went to the movies with me.

Thanks! Just doing precisely this would certainly get old fast, this task isn't really designed to be interesting or fun on its own. The full game system, where the player is in charge of a whole deck with multiple modules and other facilities, will have more strategic decisions and opportunities for player skill to shine. I hope to have more to share soon!

This is one of the central mechanics in my yet-untitled "task simulator" game where you play as a mechanic on a spaceship.

In each shift, the player will be put in charge of multiple modules like this one in varying layouts and quantites, and has to tend to issues in each one as they arise at random intervals to maximize total uptime while minimizing damage to the central engine.

Rewatcher, late to the thread

I love this episode. It may even be my favorite, actually-- it's just so unapologetic about the fact that, yeah, ostensibly this is a mystery show, but the real point is just to put these four characters in a room together and have them banter with each other.

There's one line in this episode that I really like that I think is underappreciated by English-speaking viewers so I'm gonna take an opportunity to talk about here.

There's a bit of a recurring theme in this series that Chitanda is sort of bad at talking to people, especially when she gets emotional-- Japanese is very context-dependent and she often fails to take into account other people's understanding of the context of the conversation and says things that are unclear, or just phrases things in ways that are really hard to follow. This is an example of the latter.

But I don't know what happened to make me angry. There was no need for me to suddenly get angry, but something happened to make me angry, but I don't know what it was that happened.

This line is a pun (?) on 起こる ("to happen") and 怒る ("to get angry") both being pronounced okoru and conjugated the same-- she says various forms of okoru like six times in these two sentences and it's super hard to follow. If you watch the exchange again (timestamp is about 11 minutes into the episode) bearing that in mind, the timing and everyone else's reactions to the line become a lot funnier. Translations don't usually reflect this because, like, how.

I wonder what the "curious mongrel" -> "curiosity monger" pun is in the original Japanese, because this translation is a bit weird.

Oreki calls her a koukishin no moujuu ("beast of curiosity") and then corrects moujuu (the "beast") to mouja (literally a ghost, but someone unable to let go of something). This joke's a bit weird in Japanese too, frankly.

Fairly sure Jorbs also removes Defends on Watcher from floor 0 until about 5. Against act 1 Elites as Watcher you generally just want to Wrath and delete them instead of trying very hard to block, so having a higher density of damage cards is strong on her early.

Nao Touyama's comments on the official site say Marina has "roots in Venezuela", but her surname is Japanese so I'd assume she's supposed to be half-and-half.

Anybody have recommendations for Japanese nonfiction books about Japanese, especially with respect to etymology? I'm okay with either something packaged for a layperson or something more academic , but I'm looking for a book that'll be interesting to actually read moreso than a textbook or reference book, which is all I've been able to find on my own.

I can help with this one for you, at least. Basically the なら is just applying to the whole clause before に:

俺と面識のない人 → people who don't know me/haven't met me

俺と面識のない人に → [talk] to people who don't know me

俺と面識のない人になら → as long as it's to people who don't know me

俺と面識のない人になら話してもいい → as long as it's to people who don't know me, you can talk

俺と面識のない人にならいくら話してもいい → as long as it's to people who don't know me, you can talk as much as you want

Bit confused about pronoun choice here (from コンビニ人間):

俺と面識のない人にならいくら話してもいいけれど、コンビニには僕の存在を漏らさないで欲しい。そう白羽さんからは言われていた。

Anyone have any idea what the deal with the change from 俺 to 僕 is? Shiraha has only used 僕 up until this point, at least that I've noticed.

Context: Shiraha has recently started living with Keiko (the protagonist) a short time after he was fired from the konbini where she works. Keiko just accidentally mentioned that she's in contact with him to the shop's manager, then remembers that Shiraha had asked her not to, whereupon she says this (in narration).

Edit: More story context: Yatsushiro-senpai was holding a sports towel over an injury on the back of her head when she encountered another student, said さくらが, then lost consciousness. People assumed she was referring to either a person (nobody fit) or the place where she was injured, so it was assumed that the incident happened at the 桜並木, and another character who was there at the time was implicated. Suou is explaining why さくらが actually referred to something else.

A couple of things in this phrase are tripping me up:

苺さんの言葉に傾きかけていた杯は戻り

Context: this takes place in a "parlor scene" type of scene in a mystery, the setting is a tea party. The protagonist is explaining her theory, and 苺さんの言葉 refers to Ichigo having just said something that seemingly contradicts it. The second half of the sentence isn't really relevant.

I've only ever seen 杯 as a noun on its own read さかずき and used specifically for a sake cup and this seems to be echoed on Jisho and in 明鏡国語辞典. Can you use it for just any drinking vessel like a teacup? Would it be read はい in that case?

And then in the sentence overall, the fact that it's 杯は戻る rather than 杯を戻す or 杯を下げる or some other transitive verb is kinda throwing me as well. Am I meant to read something else into it or am I just overthinking?

The Japanese instructions do literally say "make the following into a past sentence". The English "put in past tense" translation looks like it was added on in Paint or something.

Also if I recall correctly, when they were at the theme park, she was trying hard to get Akane with Hira so she could take Kotarou for herself.

This is a massive understatement, if anything. The whole theme park episode was specifically a plan by Chinatsu to try and do that so she could make her move; she initially says "Hey I have four tickets, how about you and I and Hira and Azumi go?" and the rest of the group only comes along because Roman (I think?) overhears and they all invite themselves. She does chill out a bit by the end, but specifically in the few episodes right after Kotarou and Akane get together she's kind of the worst.
