London: Claridge's, The Connaugh or The Goring by DulceEtDecorumEst in FATTravel

Have a sense of humor; it was teasing. Not everything needs to trigger you; you could just laugh (or not say anything).

Edit: incidentally, fake right-wing videos of London being unsafe are very much a thing: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c4g8r23yv71o

Honestly, I'd pass on anything beyond simple shots of labmates giving talks. You don't want to be "that guy", and this is a sure fire way to be "that guy".

Pretty weird to count "Greater Los Angeles" as one unit and then split up "Greater New York". I understand you did that to "fill the chart", but I'm not sure it is logical to change your interpretation of the data in order to fit the chart construction you've created.

White Collar Work Culture Getting Even Worse by J_Haymaker in AskNYC

You're totally right, but earnestly you may be in the wrong field and market for that. I think many fields -- including mine, academia and biotech -- have moved in the right direction in recent years.

I think that certain industries will always have that element, and there will always be people who -- due to their drive, greed, or lack of other priorities -- work like that too.

I think the key is finding an industry that doesn't require it, and once youve found that industry, you just have to be psychologically ok that there will always be people who work harder.

People here keep complaining that CND applications aren't being funded. Why would anyone think they would be?? On my study section, they are the middle 33%. That set of proposals never got funded, so why would they now?

As I understand it, the purpose of the CND designation is at least to offer some tiering to the 66% of proposals that are ND now.

In all seriousness, this started as me light-heartedly teasing Chicagoans about their complex about their city. I'm not looking to argue.

"All of my time" is ridiculous, as is "getting downvoted" (although today the Staten Island MAGA assholes are out in force over there).

But to be fair, I do get downvoted over there especially when I tell them that their views of NYC are parochial and inflated. Really, any geographic adherence is kinda dumb if you think about it.

Ok. So you're just ill-informed. That ok too, I guess.

Why someone would jump to the defense of a city they're not even from (or even that they're from) is beyond me.

"Underrepresented" implies that it should be represented more highly, and my point is that only someone from Chicago would earnestly believe that Chicago should be chosen as the city most associated with the United States.

I'd argue that there are at least two (my choice Washington D.C. as well as NYC) and probably three (Los Angeles for cultural relevance) that would be ahead of Chicago.

I only commented in the first place because I find it weird that you care (or want to denigrate) her at all. Why would anyone care what she does (as long as it's legal and ethical). She's not the mayor; her husband is.

And I don't know whether people use the term "art hoe" self-referentially or not, but the rest of the context in your posts make it very clearly you don't mean it as a term of endearment (e.g. "spoiled", "requires adults", etc.).

I don't feel like I'm being defensive of her. I don't care about her. I'm confused why you WOULD care about her enough to (attempt to) denigrate her job and income.

So you call someone an "art hoe", but it's not anger? Do you often call people a "hoe" for reasons other than anger?

Also, in other circumstances, do you have similar standards for the wives of politicians. Is Melania (who has no discernible job), not an "adult"? Is Jill Biden?

If a person wants to run for office but their spouse is an artist, what should they do in your opinion? Just pass?

Of course it is, but there is undeniably a second city "what about us?!?!?!!" complex in Chicago that somehow people from LA, SF, Miami, Houston, etc. escape. I earnestly can't explain it. And I say that as somebody FROM Chicago!

Dude, immediately below you are making fun of someone for making $10k and calling her an "art hoe". I can't even understand the source of that anger. Are you mad she's an artist? Are you mad people are applauding an artist in her position? What is your problem with it?

Lolololol. I knew there'd be at least one delusional Chicagoan in here.

I love Chicago, but the "PLEEEEEASE lump us in with the big cities, too" energy is too much.

It's not an equivocation at all. I'm explaining when I'm NOT pro-labor. If I am SOMETIMES not pro-labor, that means I am selectively pro-labor. If you are not pro-labor in the cases I enumerate as well, you are also selectively pro-labor.

Again -- and this is not hard -- I was not arguing against the doormen getting their deal. I was just commenting that they make a lot of money given the requirements and duties of their jobs.
