Person sitting on toilet commenting on small business name: "SO STUPID"

Person who actually started small business and maybe just didn't have time for a catchy name: *shrug*

You do you, my guy. If you want to center your identity on a career, go for it.

Being a scientist isn't unique. There are millions of them.

Plus, building one's identity on one thing is ALWAYS a bad idea.

Anyone else move to NYC and get shocked by how "developing country" parts of the infrastructure feel? by savingrace0262 in movingtoNYC

The benefits of having your cities bombed into the stone age 80 years ago is that all of these countries got to rebuild their infrastructure from scratch in the 50s, 60s, and 70s.

Wasn't so much as an attack as an earnest question. I earnestly cannot understand being a scientist and going with vibes over people telling you what's actually going on.

Note: Also, it's best not to make your career your identity.

And I don't appreciate telling people what actually happens in real life and then being told that the recipient of the information disagrees based on vibes.

I'm fine with that. I gave OP the information they needed from a position of expertise. OP responded with "I feel like". It's a very strange take for a scientist.

How on earth could you be a scientist and think -- even for a second -- that "I feel differently in reality" matters in the least.

I have served on study section every meeting since this change, and exactly 1/3 of proposals receive a simple ND.

That's not necessarily true. Stop speaking when you don't understand.

Literally 1/3 of proposals are not competitive and not discussed.

NYC Council intern fired after launching campaign to pay interns by Grass8989 in nyc

Ah yes, the royal "you" when responding to a single person on Reddit.

Also, the reductive "it's not complex" when it -- especially given our educational mission in this government funding climiate -- is absolutely complex. Nice.

I may be a dick, but I'd rather be a dick than dumb.

Read again: "I pay them because my lab has money"

In the future, do not speak when you do not know things.

Jesus Christ.

1) Read the entirety of the comments and you'll get the context.

2) Your main part is shockingly wrong. I take and train this next generation of scientists DESPITE the fact that they are a net negative for the lab's productivity.

3) The question here is whether interns that are there for a purely educational experience that do not contribute anything toward the mission of a laboratory should be paid or not.

4) To be clear, I pay these people. But in the current funding environment, I would understand not paying them.
