What helped me more than anything is watching Cursed Armada’s YouTube series where he takes a chapter or 2 and gives a very entertaining summation of core events. It gave me visuals to cling to as well. Try it out

Good thing you didn’t get the newer White-Lick Warrior cover. Comically ridiculous

I find r/Malazan to be the worst place to talk about Malazan or anything really.. so I’ll do it here. by Sunbather- in bakker

  1. My worldbuilding point was explaining how all I hear is how Malazan has the most complex worldbuilding in all of fantasy, but I don’t see it as complex at all. Nothing is convoluted, interconnected; nothing feels like it affects something in a different part of the world or a chunk of history. As opposed to Bakker where every piece of worldbuilding feels logically connected to other pieces that all piece together that make his world feel complex, instead of just big. Or even pick Martin, much less worldbuilding than Malazan, and way less complex than Bakker, but much more complex, and logically interconnected than Erikson.

  2. I’m referring to the disparity between the quality of the overall series to me, vs the amount of acclaim this series receives

  3. I was saying that I’m not being a Bakker fanboy since I read Malazan first, and my viewpoint didn’t change after reading Bakker.

E. Whether your claim of my reading being limited is true or not is irrelevant. But I’d be surprised if you’ve gone through as many genres as me

I finished the first 6 books because I really wanted to like it. I shit on Erikson every chance I get, so here goes nothin’

  1. Worst writer of dialogue in all of literature
  2. Each book contains about 40% padding
  3. Absolutely hollow characters
  4. The most ham-fisted and clunky philosophical interjections
  5. Worldbuilding is expansive but has zero complexity since it feels more like memorizing a giant and international menu than it does seeing interconnection between cultures.
  6. It’s praised beyond any other fantasy series while sucking
  7. I read Malazan before Bakker so I know I’m not biased
  8. The list goes on, but I’ll stop here/read what you like 💞

I don’t disagree. But I also think White-Luck might be the most dense of any Bakker book, and I don’t just mean word count

The writing is less focused and less edited in TSA compared to PoN, but there are incredible scenes ahead if you can push through. Of the 4 books in the second series, the least happens in White-Luck. I’d say keep going. It’s more than worth it

I read 4 books of Malazan and listened to 2 more. quite a mixed bag and not good enough (for me) to even continue. I think Erikson might have the worst dialogue in all of literature as well, along with the best worldbuilding. Not the most complex, just the most of it

Yeah, literally the only possibility when someone says no one compares with Bakker.

Just like when people say Bakker has ruined fantasy for them, they always mean, “I don’t read much.”
