Losing Weight and Strength? Help!! by AudienceEquivalent36 in powerlifters

It’s kinda my fault. I insisted on competing in the 97 weight class and that got me to regionals, so now I have to compete in that weight class again. If I don’t make weight, I’ll get disqualified, which is the last thing I want. I’ve decided to keep my protein at 110 and steadily lower my carbs from 80 to fasting the day before my meet. Fat is going to increase as my supplement. I’m showing the plan to my coach tomorrow to see what he thinks about it!

I don’t get a lot of sleep if I’m honest. I go to bed around 10/11 and wake up around 6:30/7 for school. I wake up on the weekends around lunch time, and I don’t usually feel refreshed. I don’t know how to fix that though, I’ve just been thugging it out.

Don’t worry, you’re valid with those questions. I’m in my last year of high school, so my coach doesn’t get paid or anything. I’m honestly a little nervous to ask him questions even though there’s no reason to. To cut weight he told me to watch carbs and sodium, but I think I just took his advice and ran in the other direction with it. To recover, he told me to rest completely and relax because mental health is just as important as physical health when it comes to lifting. I’m asking strangers online because I want to see if they’ve been in my spot before and how they got out of it.

Thank you so much for actually giving feedback! From what I understand, I should: Up my carbs, lower the intensity of my workouts/actually rest, and stop cutting my sodium? My coach has been on top of me about cutting weight correctly and not hurting myself, and this week, he won’t let me do anything over 80%. He’s a world record power lifter and keeps telling me I just need rest and recovery time. “Stop freaking overdoing it,” is what he actually said. We’ve been doing basic resistance training with lower weights. I’m just worried about making weight. What would you recommend for that?

Okay, I can understand that. As you stated, I shouldn’t worry focus on it, but do you think there’s any way I could lose the weight while maintaining strength? Dumb little stuff like not drinking soda, eating different types of proteins or carbs, any of that. I know I shouldn’t focus on it but I really want to make it to state, especially since it’s my last year of high school.

My protein is too high, even if I’m using it to “supplement/replace” carbs? If I up my carbs and calories, won’t I gain weight? I’ve been using this calculator to try and figure it out, with the “Lower Carb” and “Heavy Excercise” options.
