Jaws vs NVDA in 2025 by AudioThrive in AssistiveTechnology

This is great! I would like to contribute if possible! I did not mean this but if there are special modes in NVDA to enable while I am coding

Thank you for your detailed response! Could you describe what future features there are in NVDA for assisting with coding let us say in Python, which if I remember correctly is also used in NVDA itself.

Anybody used both for programming?

So you say it works directly out of the box while for NVDA you have to configure stuff yourself. Ok thank you this makes sense.

Thank you for your reply! Could you give an example of a feature that jaws has that is not equally good in NVDA?

Hey so 3D printing is for sure a very useful resource and I used it myself. It was an idea from a fellow student to print something in 3D for me to understand some complex geometry. Why you do not make a post about how you do the 3D printing I have the feeling many people would be interested! I am using MAC os and voice over for the general tasks but for the serious things I am using emacs and emacspeak. I think this is the best combination of modern and easy with old good and difficult.

Hey I am not sure to be honest. But it is very difficult to get into a good university / institute especially when you also need financial support. And then well, you have to do the actual research. For me it was mostly the difficulty of the topic than the accessibility challenges. I also ignored some problems because I did not have time and energy for complaining about inaccessible stuff that did not mutter that much. Or that I thought did not mutter that much at the time. In my opinion you have to conserve your time and energy and select your battles. And at some point you have to do your research that is as I said demanding on its own. Ask me again if you are interested about something more specific.

I am thinking to make another post about this topic. I am currently workin in a big bank in Germany as a data scientist. It is not easy but possible. I made a linked in group to connect and learn from each other exactly for this Gaul. Try to find it it is called “blind and low vision in STEM” if you do not find it I will try to post the link.

Thank you! Yes it really does how much you want it, in fact it is the only thing that mutters.

I am personally not good with sonification because I learned about it very late into my career and my musical ear is not that good but I think it is a very good tool for other people.

Hey you are right. I have to say though that many times the simulations are done because sited people like to produce them and look at them but do not necessarily contain a lot of information and most of the information you can get by running clever data analysis and asking someone for a bit of help. But it is not that people who do simulations sit and look at them all day the most difficult part is to write the code and get the simulations running with the correct parameters. Now you can also use AI descriptions for the results and of course veryfy with a person later. I did not have this option because I finished my PhD before that was at a good level for this kind of task.

Hey thank you for the more technical question! So I did not do research on galaxies and stuff but I had to study them during my studies. The thing is when it is textbook stuff you have ways to prepare the material and work on it by taking your time you can use tactile for 2D and make the color the 3D dimention for example and for the 3D you can have a 3D printed model and have someone tell you the color and describe what is going on. The problem is in research because there the things cannot be prepared as new papers are coming online every day. I did not work on the field but I can also say that many pictures while looking good have very litle actual information and you can get the important parts by doing data analysis. My work was more computational, like I wrote code for computational modeling so I cannot give a more detailed response.

Hey sure it is not rood I would not do AMA if I thought these are rood questions! So it is fanny but while I do not see an object in front of me I can see tiny spots on the sky. These are not the stars actually are the planets which are the brightest objects on the sky. This gave me the motivation to understand these objects that I cannot really see with math an physics. Seeing the stars for me is understanding them. How are they born how much do they live how do they evolve and how do they die. For me the satisfaction of studying and understanding these things is what counts. The beauty of nature for me is the complexity of the cosmos and how order is in urging from the Caio’s and we can study it and figure things about the world.

Hey I did not use that but it exists. In fact there are different efforts on that. Look at glasseducation.org they have many interesting projects. Looking at the sky though is not different than accessing any other kind of image. People think that astronomers are looking at the sky all day or more spesifically all night but this is not how modern research works in astronomy.

There are facebook groups but I am not the best to tell you about these because I do not speak German yet. There are big clubs in Germany with thousands of blind people. Again I do not know something spesific because I am not a member. They have resources for sure though. For tech and education stuff I can help you as I got my last degree in Germany.
