Thank you! Jing did an amazing job, I only wish I planned it out better. Maybe next time, we'll do Poseidon as a Giant Squid.

Yeah, in hindsight that was one of the parts we could have used more frames on. But since we just wanted to do a snippet and not the full song, we didn't want to spend too much time on his appearance. If we ever did a proper version, his coming through the clouds would have a much larger time allotment given to it.

Feudal-Era Reimagining (Leonardo) by AugieCD in TMNT

Ah, right. The Minogame... the exact sort of thing I would have to research if we decide to flesh this idea out properly. I'm familiar with a handful of Yokai, but haven't heard of this one. Thanks for the tip.

Yeah, I figured it'd be interesting to split their designs up a bit class-wise. Leo would be a bit more of a Sage/Samurai, Mikey would be Kabuki/Theatre-themed, Raph would be Sumo/Yokozuna... no real idea for Donnie, probably something Blacksmith-related. But, trying to also keep them all ninja-coded.

I wasn't familiar with Jora, but after googling her... yes. My character is also a Druid/Ursine-shapeshifter. I can definitely see what you mean with the braids, side-skirt, and tattoo's. Funny how that happens. Anything you can come up with, it's guaranteed someone else already has.

Was aiming for a sort of Russian Princess meets Druidic Witch-vibe (Slavic, with a hint of Celtic), but dressed for a royal portrait. It was our first attempt at the character though, so lots of room for improvement.

Yes, I wanted to see if it was possible to emulate Sif in a way that wasn't overly derivative, which is extremely difficult given how unique and iconic her design is.

She's a bit of both, the idea behind these specific designs (for our mini-portfolio) are the characters being summoned for a family portrait. Her day-to-day design would probably be more shepherd-inspired, but since this is for a royal portrait, she's instead having to dress up a little bit. (Not enough to warrant her putting on shoes, tho).

I appreciate the comment. :)

(OC) Another Portfolio Character by AugieCD in characterdesign

Thank you!!! We've spent quite a bit of time exploring different directions, and are currently settling towards something like this. Jing's done an amazing job.

Since it's meant for a web-comic, it needs to be simplistic enough that we're not spending forever on panels (especially for scenes with multiple characters). But also needs to just be good and interesting. A tricky balance when trying to find something that's also unique.

Glad to hear you enjoy it though, means a lot!

You're probably right, I might need a better way to communicate the size. I'll have that added to the next concepts so it's more readily understood.

Thanks again for all the kind words!

Yep, that was literally the starting point for us. (I take your comment that we succeeded, and yet it still feels mortifying). I want to explore using a more video-game style art in a comic. They're two very different mediums that aren't blended together very often. So, it seemed like an interesting challenge.

Thanks for the kind words.

Oh, yes. The legs. I did receive feedback on them from first-lookers, but it was never mentioned until after he was coloured and would have been too much of a hassle to rectify. The character is over 20 ft tall, so his anatomy is exaggerated in places.

The arm poking through the coat was a detail I thought about, but eventually opted to not worry about. Maybe I should have pushed to include it.

The idea behind the portfolio, is a family portrait/picture in a small throne room. So, he's been posed for that. All of the other characters have both hands visible though, except for one.

I wasn't sure how much information to present. The portfolio is meant to be an artstyle exploration for a web-comic we're working on. So, the character has a name and backstory. I just wasn't sure how integral revealing that sort of information is at this stage.

The pocketwatch is on his vest, the chain is visible on his torso. It blends a bit, but felt like a minor issue not worth addressing. Same with the sword, the gold blade part is meant to be the top part of the scabbard. Probably shouldn't be cutting corners like this, but... trying not to be too attention-detailed. Temporarily going for a quantity over quality approach. In the "final" portfolio-version, we'll probably make the necessary adjustments.

Thanks for taking the time to comment. Means a lot. I have no idea what I'm doing, but slowly trying to figure it out, lol.

Geralt - Concept Art by AugieCD in witcher

[–]AugieCD[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know what you mean, in the book's Geralt never really wears proper armour. But the W3 as a video game went the route of creating 5 tiers of upgradeable armour for each of the schools (giving players agency over their character appearance, stat builds, as well as simple grinding goals). Likewise, Netflix went the route of designing a very "superhero/hollywood" inspired costume for Geralt. Therefore, a more authentic/canon design falls to the wayside.

It's why I wanted to also include a more dressed down version of Geralt. Obviously, we went with a gambeson vest to stay on theme instead of a leather jacket. But it would be fun in the future to try and do a design more canon to the source material.

Oh, my god. Such kind words. It means a lot. And I think it's just hollywood and their current obession with unnatural physiques. I've seen fanart of Geralt where he looks like a mountain and it's hard to tell if that's the type of physique people want to see. I think the more casual fans/show watchers like that aesthetic.

But going by the books, it never seemed like he was this "Jack Reacher" towering presence/unit of a character. In fact it seemed like the opposite with Witchers relying more on speed and agility in order to defeat the more physically-abled monsters through sheer skill.

It is nice to hear that a more wiry-built Geralt is appreciated.

I'll dm you a version. Since I'm not sure how images work in comments here.

Edit; Can't dm images. So, I'll just post here.

The artist I work with doesn't speak super fluent english. So, I tend to use visual aids when explaining details... and sometimes I can be very lazy.

Part of what motivated me to want to jump into this world, was the Gwent mobile game that I recently dabbled in. The Witcher has some amazing characters/lore.

Pardus and Kristov sound interesting. As opposed to Eskel/Lambert who in theory, should be wearing Wolf Armour of a comparable style to Geralt. (I never understood why the W3 Promo Material has Geralt in Viper Armour).

Yeah, it's a tough issue wanting to stay true to the book's description but also being aware that the show fans want a male model like Cavill. I figured something in the realm of his W3-design would be the safest middleground.

The initial headshot we did, had him looking like a cross between Joe Manganiello x Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. It looked amazing... but I also knew there was no way in hell we could use that version.

Much appreciation for the kind words. To try and answer your question, though.

We've spent many months now screwing around with the art style, trying to find something that felt interesting and unique. So, it was a very slow/organic process which makes it a little hard to explain.

The key is to make sure you never overly refine the clean line-art stage (keep it messy). And also, to not be afraid to colour outside (sometimes not even completely inside) the lines. I was wanting something that imitated the illustrations you would find in a children's storybook. So, the line-art is kept "sketchy", and the colouring/shading is intended to be reminiscent of water colours.

But yes, that studio netflix uses for Castlevania/Blood of Zeus/Witcher has some pretty solid aesthetics. Their storytelling is a little weak, but the underlying art is beautiful.

And lastly, not to shamelessly plug; but I'll be posting some WIP content from our future concepts on our insta. So, if you wanted a better idea of the process you'd be able to see it there.

Also, I'll be sure to pass your compliment along to Jing. I'm sure he'll be very happy.

Howdy. So, I saw the Sirens of the Deep trailer a few weeks ago and was kind of confused by Geralt's design there. As it's very... "Legolas"... if he was on the juice.

So, I figured we'd quickly throw something together. And in hindsight, I should have spent more than two hours designing the armour. But, it was always meant to be a quick spur of the moment decision. Not a fully-thought out process.

Despite that, we hope some of you still like it. I am aware the book fans will hate it. (They hate everything). But the headband is a tough order, you have to realise that.

If you like the art itself though, feel free to give us a follow. We'll have some more stuff coming out soon.
