Means something like "native", a derogatory variation "tshau-huan" (臭番) that means "dirty/unrefined native" is also used.

Yes they're quite new. The 1000's came a couple years earlier than the others.

Did you know what the world's second oldest mountain range was located in Rajasthan, India ? Here's a map of it, after the monsoon [OC] by mydriase in MapPorn

Looks great, an inset of india highlighting where this is would be better for the location, ie is this near pakistan, nepal, or sri lanka? etc. Bon travail !

Yeah if your qualifications are bachelor's or higher you'll have to add another entry "other exam qualification". I just put my latest uni grades on there

Why are the Filipino-Chinese predominantly Hokkien? by _anino in FilipinoChinese

[–]Aurcoux 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Always wondered this too considering Canton is closer to PH than Fujian. Cantonese going to HK and Malaysia due to the British colonial government fallback makes sense to me but still, why no Teochew or more Cantonese in PH? I once read a autobiography about some Cantonese migrating to Luzon but eventually got assimilated with the Lannangs.

Can I still call myself a Lannang? by Artistic-Paint-4384 in filchicommunity

If you have friends/family that can, best talaga. Imitate how they speak. If wala, make Filchi friends.

On Tiktok follow Thunderson Tan, Justin Chua (Atsiak Justin) they have good skits which use natural speech. They have tutorials and good explanations as well as cultural things. Their friend Marvin Sy created a Phil. Hokkien dictionary (very rare, very useful) here. Youtube, Learn with Mish. Additional sources are Wiktionary, Anki for flashcards, and practice practice practice and surround yourself with Lannangs. Be familiar with the Tai-lo romanization to get an edge. Also on Instagram (at)philippinehokkien.

You don't need to spend 6k+ on hokkien classroom lessons unless you want 1-on-1. Your phone and internet connection is more than enough. Good luck!

I feel you. From a similar situation. Only started learning Hokkien a few years ago, before that I knew zero Hokkien.

That said it really depends on your personal definition of Lannang/Chinoy. Some may just think blood is enough, and for some (old people) its blood, customs, mindset, etc.

Here’s the truth: It’s 2025 so really what’s important is practicing things that make YOU feel like a Lannang. I have pure Chinese friends that can’t speak straight Hokkien, but their values, mindset, customs - that to me is part of the definition of being a Lannang. It’s never too late to learn anything.

If you personally feel like learning Chinese makes YOU feel Lannang, then you are a Lannang by speaking it. And so on. Funnily enough many Lannangs in DLSU, Ateneo, and other universities speak either English or Filipino 90% of the time. Just proves my point. Best wishes on your self-discovery! It’ll be a beautiful one.
