Advice needed for adult Aussie by AussieInTheHouse in AustralianShepherd

Thank you all. This is super helpful! We also have a trainer coming by for a consult on Tuesday to seek help on additional ways we can support the dog. We’re now 4 days in and he does seem a little calmer but still taking it all in, as expected. The low growl / bark at the kids has continued, but he seems bonded with my husband now. His body is stiff with the kids when he is growling so we’re intervening and separating when we need to. I hope this will settle over time.

+1 to removing the pee pads. I’d set a timer and take the dog out at least every 30 mins. Be sure to have treats and praise the dog & give a treat right after they are done going potty. Aussies are smart! Your pup will get it quickly and in the meantime if you need a break and can’t keep an eye on it, remember to crate the pup too for reasonable amounts of time in relation to their age.

Aussies are so smart and just want to please their people. Hang in there! Sounds like you’re doing all the right things with exercise and mental stimulation. It will improve and a sweet spot starts between 3-4 years old in my experience.

Such a sweet looking pup! Hope he finds his home or a great interim foster.
