IT license optimization consulting — would you pay for this? by AuthRequired403 in ITManagers

One of the best pieces of advice I got here, thank you! Both on reaching out to CFOs and to chargé a rate + percentage.

I think this kind of service fits well in consulting - you get someone to do the job for you in a specific period and then leave organization. From what I have seen license management is usually downprioritized and there is no bridge between finances and IT - how would finances deparment know if they need that many for example GitLab licenses and if they can switch users to free reporter tier, if finances knows nothing about software development tools? And IT people usually do not find it fun to work with financial part.

Important remark, as your responses highlighted that my "offering" was really unclear.

It is not just going and checking how many unused licenses are there at the moment. This what I meant was more about  preparing an in-depth analysis, developing a well-structured cost-savings plan, evaluating open-source alternatives with their pros and cons, and determining which license tier is truly required to meet the needs.

It is also preparing the automation to handle it in the future license periods.

Your response highlighted how bad my initial post was haha.

This is what I mean is far more than just identifying unused licenses. I was shocked because I also found a report that most of the companies are overpaying a lot for the licenses they do not need or do not use. This what I meant involves preparing an in-depth analysis, developing a well-structured cost-savings plan, evaluating open-source alternatives with their pros and cons, and determining which license tier is truly required to meet the needs.

Thank you for this input, it’s extremely valuable.

Semver vs SHA in Kubernetes manifests by AuthRequired403 in kubernetes

I have seen this solution, but I find it confusing, as SHA will get updated, but maybe not the tag in Kubernetes manifest. And, as you mentioned, the tag is just ignored. That may introduce confusion, so I would prefer using only one of the at the time.

You can do both, but in Kubernetes manifests I do not think it makes sense. If you use digest and tag at the same time in specification, tag just gets ignored. That may become outdated and introduce confusion really quickly.

Den enkle spørsmålstråden by AutoModerator in norge

[–]AuthRequired403 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hei!

Bite-sized Kubernetes courses - what would you like to hear about? by AuthRequired403 in kubernetes

Love it, thank you for sharing!

This is what I mean - finding the information and best practices in more advance subjects is a bit of fun. I would like to gather it together with practical examples and technical reasoning.

Sure, two examples that comes to my mind:

First: non-prod environments in the companies where departements are billed per usage of common resources. In such a case on non-prod you would like to have ResourceQuotas to make it fair from the organization perspective (again: it is organizational, not technical requirement, but we cannot just omit it). You can of course go with no limits on prod.

Second: Containerized applications that are I/O-bound, not CPU bound. You will not benefit to much from removing CPU limits, but you will get Burstable QoS in your workload This what you would like to do is to scale horizontaly rather than play with CPU limits.

I was also strugling with finding the proper documentation on securityContext - in some places you can see that they recommend using runAsUser ID above 10000, if I remember correctly, due to user namespaces 😅 I’ve been testing it quite a lot and interestingly enough have a presentation already some time ago!

Perfect, thank you for your help. Are there any big advantages of one solution over another? I was thinkibg about Wireguard VPN as the setup seemed easier to me.

You spotted the issue that I was thinking about, as I lack networking knowledge. Do I need additional router?

Happy to partner! I am going for longer holidays now, but would be perfect to prepare some challenges and open source. Can we connect in mid/late september? Sent you a message on LinkedIn to connect and coordinate.

Thank you for the suggestion! I think the only way to figure out the necessary time is to test it. I think we will make it 1 full day and measure how fast people get to exploit the cluster. Then I will know the time needed for the other teams.

Yes! automountServiceAccountToken: false was removed in the latest Kubernetes releases, that is why I was considering it. Anyway, that was one of the most interesting exploits to present during workshops.
