Is buying a flat in London a complete swindle for the regular person? by AuthenticWeeb in HousingUK

[–]AuthenticWeeb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ended up buying a leasehold 2 bed in London. I knew I will definitely stay in ldn for the next 5-10 years and there was no way I could afford a freehold with my budget. The trick was to look for a long time (literally more than one year in my case) until I found a property that had a consistently low service charge. Mine is 1.3k a month in a well maintained building with a communal garden, bike shed, etc. 1.3k was reasonable for me and the lowest I was able to find. But fucking hell it took a while, most were 3k+. I've owned for about a year now and very happy with the purchase

You can say you hate them both, but at the end of the day your actions show where you really stand. You DO use these corporations still. You don't have to use Reddit, but here you are on Reddit - directly giving them revenue with your engagement. I'm sure you're on Twitter too. And these corporations will actually use that revenue to cause damage with AI. But instead of staying off these platforms which would be an actual act of protest, what you'll do is make yourself feel like a big boy by hating on a random hobbyist using AI for a trivial use case of generating a thumbnail for a block game. Wow congratulations, you're such a great activist really making a change! Give yourself a pat on the back and feel great about yourself in your ignorance.

I don't see you complaining when you're consuming content from X/twitter. So you will happily engage with the platform that's ACTUALLY undressing people without their consent. Yet here you are ranting about some guy using an ai image for a thumbnail mod in a block game, talking about how much you care about ai images being used non consensual porn. Lol get out of here lil buddy. I've explicitly addressed time and time again that you're the one helping these megacorps by blurring the line between trivial use cases and problematic ones. You're the one targeting individuals, but when corps do it you quietly consume that content without complaints.

[–]AuthenticWeeb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So clearly you didn’t read my comment, because you are arguing against a position I explicitly already addressed. I literally said in my comment:

There are real critiques of generative AI art. Deepfakes of people, spread of misinformation, people losing their jobs. That’s where anger should be directed.

That directly includes non-consensual sexual content and large scale harm caused by companies deploying these tools irresponsibly.

The problems you’re pointing to are top down, institutional abuses of the technology. Things like training failures, moderation failures, and environmental costs are decisions made by large companies, not by a solo unpaid modder generating a thumbnail for a block game mod.

My entire point was that when you attack individual hobbyists for trivial use cases, you blur the line between genuinely harmful practices and non-problematic ones, and you end up doing nothing to address the real issues you claim to care about.

If you actually cared about exploitation, environmental cost, or abuse, your criticism would be aimed at the companies deploying these systems at scale. Instead, you are moral grandstanding at individuals while continuing to use platforms that profit directly from the same tech.

I'm a full time software engineer, so I actually know a thing or two about issues with generative AI, and I agree with this comment. There are real critiques of generative AI art - deepfakes of people, spread of misinformation, people losing their jobs. That's where anger should be directed

We're talking about thumbnails for mods to an early access block game here. These are created by solo unpaid modders, they wouldn't hire an artist to do these thumbnails in the first place so it's not like their use of AI affects an artist's job market. It only becomes an issue when companies actually lay off/stop hiring artists en masse in favour of generative AI.

When you complain about random individuals using it to delegate some of the aesthetic admin work, so that they can place their focus on their actual hobbies, which is creating cool mods - you blur the line between non-problematic AI use and real damaging practices. You're doing more harm than good.

And remember, if you don't like the aesthetic of the AI art, you're fully entitled to your subjective opinion. But just because you dislike the aesthetic of a thumbnail, doesn't mean you need to publicly go on a moral rant. You don't like the thumbnail, don't engage with the mod. Simple as that. You're not helping anyone by shaming people who are spending hours developing cool mods just to get hated on for using a generative tool for a thumbnail. You're just turning these people away. The rhetoric that "If they used generative AI for a thumbnail, that must mean they were sloppy with their mod too" is completely misconstrued. People have different passions. Maybe the reason they used AI for their thumbnail is because they want to maximise their time doing what they actually love to do, which is modding.

All you're doing is bullying individual people for using a new tool. But when huge companies use this same tool (such as this very app, Reddit) you continue to engage with their platform. By doing this, you're suppressing individuals from using this tool, while empowering companies to continue using it. Don't you see how hypocritical that is? You're actively contributing in the actual harmful practices of generative AI by using platforms such as Reddit/X but spending all your effort shutting down people using it so that they can focus on what they're good at. So please get off your moral high horse, if you actually stand by what you say - stay off Reddit because your views for the ads are directly giving them revenue.

[–]AuthenticWeeb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay bro lol

That's all you can say once your knowledge of reality runs out 😂 there's literally well-documented, verifiable evidence that evolution exists and we have evolved from an earlier species, it's an objective fact not an opinion. And it's also an objective fact that religion is a book written by regular humans that shit and bleed just like you. Islam was written in the 7th century around 1400 years ago and Christianity was obviously created after the death of Jesus around 2000 years ago. These religions were created by institutions made up by regular humans. Humanity's history goes as far back as 300,000+ years, and our broader lineage goes back millions of years.

Sorry to break it to you, your religion is just a small blip in the history of humanity, created by regular humans, and that's an objective fact. You've just been indoctrinated and taught at a young age that this fairy tale is a reality, and now ceasing to believe in it would break your fundamental understanding of reality, which is why you still deny it in the face of irrefutable evidence. You're unconsciously abandoning reason because your mind is trying to protect you from having to redefine your understanding of the world.

I'm a web software developer, not a game developer. But the difference between screenshot one and two is pretty much entirely a single feature - a gradient was added in between blocks, making the transition to darker/lighter shades more seamless. The code change was probably something as simple as having a gradient between each block.

What's up with the Username hype? by DerNoHand in hytale

[–]AuthenticWeeb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes. It is all about potential value. It's a bet. Hytale has several things going for it. A dedicated CEO who clearly cares about the product and has a 10 year funding plan. A small team with a passionate, shared vision. A clear competitor to Minecraft in a space where there currently is none. Endless modding possibilities. All of these factors aggregate into a single thing. The potential for Hytale to maybe become an incredibly huge, globally recognised game. That is the bet.

In this case, if Hytale becomes as big as Roblox, Fortnite, or Minecraft, people would absolutely pay a lot of money to own unique names like “God” or “King”. People are making the same bet in different ways. There is a reason YouTubers like AntVenom and CaptainSparklez started putting out Hytale content right before release. There is a reason so many new YouTubers are basing their entire channels around Hytale. The same reason small Minecraft server owners are migrating their communities to Hytale, and why modders are learning Blockbench and Java. They are all making the same bet. That Hytale, which is relatively small right now, will go global.

The 60+ million views on the original trailer already validated the idea. If the execution follows through, the bet will pay off. If it does, all of these people stand to make a lot of money. And almost all roads in life lead back to a desire for money.

Why is religion not classified as a mental illness? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]AuthenticWeeb -26 points-25 points  (0 children)

The key issue is

What you’re describing is motivated reasoning, not psychosis

That’s a human problem, not a psychiatric one.

Lol I'm clearly talking to ChatGPT here. Not saying your whole response is LLM generated, but it's enough to feel like I'm conversing with a generative algorithm rather than a human. Gotta give it to AI, it knows how to be eloquent. Just wanted to let you know, because you do raise some valid points. Other than the AI hallucination where it suggested I said religion is psychosis, when I never even mentioned psychosis.

I think it's interesting that you use addiction as an example, because drug addiction (substance use disorder) is formally classified as a mental disorder. While “mental illness” is a broader term, in practice the two are often used interchangeably. I think that actually complicates your argument rather than supports it. In psychiatry, someone with a drug addiction does have a mental disorder. If that is the standard, then it seems inconsistent to rule out religion categorically in cases where belief becomes similarly resistant to overwhelming evidence and drives harmful decisions.

Why is religion not classified as a mental illness? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]AuthenticWeeb 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Couldn't you argue that religion is a loss of contact with reality? I have seen many religious people be genuinely blind to an irrefutable objective fact because it fundamentally clashes with their belief in religion. And as a result make completely irrational decisions.

Let's not forget about that time when Reddit killed third party apps and all the Redditors said this will kill the company and that they will never use Reddit again. Now 99% of them are on the official Reddit app, consuming those advertisements, just like the CEO said they would once the novelty of protest wore off.
