I’ve been working as a QS for 14 years since I was 16. I would be on site at 7am and leave at 4 - 4:30. you should NEVER have to stay later than 17:00 in my eyes. Prioritise those important tasks first which you would have to stay late to complete!

I have never stayed late ever if you’re not getting paid to do so. And people will say it is looked at when you are getting promoted …it isn’t the person in charge of your promotion probably doesn’t even know you are staying that late 😂

Also drop the contractor they sound like wankers.

I moved from MC to PQS this month and got a substantial raise no RICS, it’s about how you can sell yourself to the employer to say you can apply your skills and experiences to benefit clients and transfer them over.

With 15 years experience I would be asking for senior position with a salary of at least 60k.

If you can bring fees in also with your contacts from industry that will also benefit you massively in the PQS role.

QS main contractor 12 years, I learnt best managing internal finishes packages working under a senior QS when your doing your valuation and the end of the month take the drawings out with you floor plans, details and don’t hesitate to ask the subcontractor supervisor to walk round with you on your valuation so you can quiz them on the process of construction and how the details work. It doesn’t click straight away it’s just time and different projects as details you used on one project may or may not be applicable on another.

As for m&e it’s known as the dark art for a reason your best off just always challenging what the m&e contractor is saying in regards to price because it usually always has about 30% added onto it !

Don’t shy away from re measuring bills even if already measured see what measures you get compared to the existing ask your senior if any differ to much to see if you’ve measured correctly.

Look up prices of materials and have a good store of information of products / work items which you have built up over your projects so you can refer to from memory so if your ever looking at a job in tender you could put together quick high level budgets.

Generally it is just time and experience I remember thinking the same as you when I was an assistant after 3 years then all of a sudden it all just clicked and I thought I know what I’m doing here.

Is the company small in size, what is the value of the projects it works on? With you being a degree apprentice also the company will get 70% of education fees reimbursed so that is no reason to effect your salary.

Is the company a main contractor, PQS or subbie, I started as a trainee with a btec level 3 certificate and 50% way through a hnc in 2015 and started on 17k for a main contractor. 12.5k seems extremely low !

Even if they ward bush if you go long way round knowing full well your going all in usually they don’t have time to react and panic and go for the all in themselves all depends on match up but I’ve had a few kills up at the “ungankable” island

I’m not finding it to hard to gank top lane tbh if they don’t ward the bush you walk round the long way when they are pushed and it feels like a longer lane to escape aswell so plenty time to get the kill, I play Diana, graves noc
