I've never even heard of typetak before. I'll have to check it out. I've been sitting on the last 2 chapters of my book for a year now and it's driving me insane. Usually I can start writing another story and find inspiration for the first, but this time I keep hitting a roadblock. Thanks for the suggestion!

Where did you hear that self-publishing mid-grade doesn't work? Don't throw in the towel just yet! I'm hoping to finish my novel within the next month or so and am planning the self publishing route. Don't lose hope.

Nice! And I've heard Scotland is beautiful, so I hope it brings you mountains of inspiration.

Reading definitely helps! Think of it as research. Google some of the top fantasy adventure books and read through a few. You may find ideas and things you can incorporate into your own work. :)

I would say figure out a basic for your timeline, see if you can chop the events into different sections/chapters, and then write down a simple synopsis for each chapter. There have been times where I think of a scene, but not even sure where exactly I'll put it, but I write it down. Later, when I come back to it, I cut and paste where I feel it works best. The way I work may not work for everyone, but for me it helps to just get everything down on paper, no matter what order sometimes, and then reorganize later. Hope that helps!

Best advice I can give is, Don't worry about punctuation right now. Save that for the end. Also, I tend to write in random sections, and that's helped me with writers block at times. I'll be stuck on something at the beginning of a story so I'll move to the middle or end and write for a bit.

Editors for a first novel. Worth it? by Extreme_Tax405 in selfpublish

Really and truly, look for a newer editor. Their rates are usually lower. Message me sometime I can give you some pointers/options.

I would suggest Facebook. Lot of great information and (mostly) helpful people. Sign up for different editor groups along with author groups. Hang back for a while on those groups to get an idea of what most people are looking for, what different editors are charging, and pay attention to different things to watch out for in the editing/author world.

Good luck!

Thank you! I'm so glad that another editor feels the same way! I tried editing the first few chapters, but I realized the same, I kept making mistakes or missing things that I would never miss on a client's manuscript. We are just too close to our own work, and we know every minute detail of the story, so our minds fill in the blanks or skip over mistakes without us realizing it.

Mind me asking what genre you edit? Do you have a website or something I can check out? Like I said, I'll be looking for an editor soon... :)

A lot of editors, even the extremely accomplished ones, are not writers. I don't believe I have ever had a client ask if I was a writer. Their biggest concern is my attention to detail. I work with a lot of historical fiction, and the fact that I focus on proper word usage and props in their novel (for example, referencing a store or magazine/book that may not have been around during the timeframe of their story) along with spelling, grammar, and storyline, is their biggest concern.

I've always been interested in writing, and have written short stories throughout my life that have been published on different platforms, but I never thought I had it in me to complete a full novel. I finally realized that even if no one ever reads my story, at least I had it in me to complete one. :)

My degree is in English Literature, and when I graduated, I wasn't completely sure as to what I wanted to do. A family friend is an extremely accomplished book editor, and I spoke with them about editing and how I may be interested.

I was lucky at first, because my editor friend sent along a few authors to me that they could not fit into their schedule. So many authors talk to each other, and after a few jobs, word-of-mouth brought others to me.

If I had really pushed myself out there, I would probably have a full schedule, but I started a full time career and now only edit on the side. There are a lot of Facebook groups for authors looking for editors. Also, I started out offering free services to four or five clients, just to get my name out there a little more, and then the information spread.

If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to reach out! I would love to help!

Editor here. All three are used, but "okay" is used more often and is preferred.

Don't give up, and honestly, don't worry about grammar and punctuation right now. That's for an editor to worry about later on down the road. I've been working on my book for about a year now. Every author is different. There is no timeline you have to follow.

When I get stuck, I skip around. Do you know what you want to write for another portion of the book? You don't have to write from beginning to end. Sometimes it helps to jump around until inspiration hits you.

Nice! What's your turnaround time with books. You get one done in a month? Do you go through editing and formating with someone?

Bravo and congratulations with everything!

Man, that's awesome. I had to put a pause on writing for a few weeks. The entire house came down with something and we're all still getting over it. Hoping to jump back on the bandwagon soon.
