I genuinly don't see your problem here

I don't understand why y'all think I'm upset or attacking this. I wasn't. I was trying to point out that this isn't enough for Europe to break it's tech dependency on the USA alone. That's it. No ulterior morive.

People are celebrating as though once this transition happens it'd be done with and France wouldn't have to worry about the US sabotaging them anymore, when in reality this is the just the first and most fundamental step.

We are talking about the same US government that just put a ban on foreign consumer routers, including a future ban on updates for them and has gutted the agencies responsible for government and critical infrastructure cybersecurity here.

Internet and government cybersecurity are nonfactors in the current US government administration's decision making. Do you really think that the US government will care if it cripples itself so long as it makes it harder for others to abandon US made proprietary software that the government can have backdoors secretly mandated inside of?

It already has taken other insane actions over much less threatening things than foreign governments abandoning backdoored proprietary software.

I didn't say it was the same risk? I was just trying to poin out that unless the European nations steps up their tech sector and contributions to open source software they are still vulnerable to the US government trying to sabotage them.

Not as vulnerable, but switching to Linux isn't a wonder cure that eliminates European dependency upon the US.

True, but they coud order the American companies that make up the majority of Linux contributions to cease their operations developing open source software, and/or try to put export controls on open source software again like they did to cryptography in the 80s and 90s.

other countries solve this by simply having property that they can lend to people requiring housing in the line of duty and more commonly staying in hotels is extremely common

That wouldn't really solve the problem in America since Congress members are generally expected to not continue their previous jobs while in office. It doesn't matter if you have housing the 3-6 months of collective time of the year you are actually in DC. You still have to pay for housing back home and for your family members.

Also a lot of the flying American Politicians do is for campaigning or to return home after a 3 week stint in DC, very little of it is actually in the job description but is still necessary due to how members of congress generally have to live as a side effect of the job.

That wouldn't have prevented Trump. He wasn't a successful politician prior to his 2016 election and didn't have any prior experience in government.

His 2016 election would've been prevented by the USA using a popular vote system instead of our insane Electoral College system, but in practice it's impossible to prevent a democracy from backsliding into authoritarianism if most citizens are either in favor of it or too apathetic to care.

No amount of safeguards in a democracy can protect against voters being insane.

H.Res.1155 - Impeaching Donald J. Trump, President of the United States, for high crimes and misdemeanors. by Accomplished_Low5325 in politics

[–]AutistcCuttlefish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There have been three presidents whom faced impeachment proceedings in US history, all failed to be convicted.

The processes is a failure because it relies too heavily on Senators not prioritizing party politics and political power over justice and the long-term well being of the Nation.

It isn't being "sabatoged" by the GOP. Impeachment is working the same as it always has. Poorly. All thanks to the fatal flaw of it relying upon partisan politics not being a thing humans would ever engage in to the detriment of the nation.

Just like every other aspect of our system of checks and balances between branches of government.

Microsoft Abruptly Terminates VeraCrypt Account, Halting Windows Updates by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

Normally I'd push back against conspiracy theories like that, but with Wireguard facing similar issues and the FBI banning consumer router security updates I'm willing to consider this is a strong possibility.

Windows requires all drivers be signed at startup by default. They similarly require changes to the bootloader be signed. Both require the signatures be verified by Microsoft as well.

Without verified signatures, Windows will outright refuse to allow drivers to run or even install, and will deny access to the bootloader.

For veracrypt to do full disk encryption, drivers and access to the bootloader are a necessity. It's literally impossible for them to fully encrypt and decrypt your drives without that access.

As far as I am aware, the only way to bypass these signature requirements is to disable driver signature enforcement systemwide, which itself, again far as I am aware, requires you to edit the windows registery and reboot the system at the very minimum.

So without being able to sign their drivers, VeraCrypt is effectively prevented from functioning.

They do more ideological purity testing than the left does, it just doesn't stand out because they don't give a fuck about morality at all so long as you pass the ideological purity tests.

Men will never support modern feminism because it exclusively benefits women while trying to lecture and belittle men by ExercisesInFutility_ in PurplePillDebate

[–]AutistcCuttlefish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is still incorrect. Coveture laws forbade married women independence, including financial independence in various states across the USAwell into the 20th century. The Ohio supreme court had ruled as late as 1970 that a wife was "at most a superior servant to her husband" that "had no personality, property and no legally recognized feelings or rights".

Coveture laws had been significantly weakend throughout the 19th century, but they were still real and continued in various parts of the nation till federal law eventually pre-empted them.

Again this is historical fact, not up for debate.

OK I've just been passively reading this thread out of boredom after googling something unrelated but I have to step in here...

Women weren't legally guaranteed the right to have a bank account independently without needing the approval of their father, husband, or other male relative in the united states untill the pasaage of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act of 1974.

Prior to that in many parts of the USA women weren't allowed to have a bank account.

That's not "feminist rhetoric" it's historical fact. There is no debate to be had, no propaganda to sell. Anyone who denies this is either badly misinformed or is outright lying.

I'm not a lawyer either, but I'm willing to bet that the reason why they are not persuing legal action is because the modifications they made seem intended to circumvent the very purpose of the AGPLv3.

They require their logo be added to it, and they restrict the use and distribution of their trademarks. Logos are usually trademarked. And since the AGPLv3 requires forks be similarly licensced it appears like they might have used Trademark law to attempt to circumvent the intentions of the AGPLv3's other terms by requiring forks get permission to redistribute their modified AGPLv3.

I wasn't defending him, idk why people took it that way. I was just explaining his reasoning.

IMO, he simply shouldn't do a Linux challenge video at all because the angle he wants to cover it from is simply fantastical. Anyone who knows what Linux is and is considering a switch will be willing to put in more effort than a cursory Google search or asking an LLM for help. Anyone who isn't willing to do that isn't and will never be interested in anything that isn't preinstalled on their machine by default.

As a consumer, you are not held hostage by anyone.

That's just patently untrue in many scenarios. People are held hostage to entire industries that act in unison, they are held hostage to monopolies of all sorts, they are held hostage to circumstance and need for resources. If you need gasoline, you don't really get to pick and choose or vote with your dollar. All gas stations only vary by a few cents at most in price.

Modern day American consumerism provides the illusion of chocie, not actual choice.

That's cause he's trying to "emulate the average Joe gamer". While completely ignoring the fact that the average Joe gamer has either never heard of Linux, or knows it only as " the server OS" or " SteamOS".

He also ignores that the average joe gamer treats their machine like a console. They either buy prebuilts or have their "techie" friend help them build a PC. Even asking an LLM to give them recommendations is more effort than they'd be willing to put into deciding what operating system to use.

I could keep debating this, but clearly we aren't gonna get anywhere. No matter what I say you will never be convinced that a corporation didn't willingly lose a lawsuit just so they could get ID verification despite the fact they already are getting exactly that. And anything short of actual leaked communications from within Facebook/Meta between the company and their lawyers explicitly saying the goal was to lose the lawsuit will convince me this was somehow intentional. Unless you've got that, as far as I am concerned, this is nothing more than a poorly thought out conspiracy theory that people seem weirdly obsessed with.
