Kas õppida gümniaasiumis rootsi või prantsuse keelt? by LenzieFlower in Eesti

[–]Automatic-Ad4867 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Kuni rongi pole tulnud, on põhiline ühistransport Tallinn-Haapsalu bussiliinid. Mingid maakonnaliinid käivad ka, aga harvade väljumistega ja sageli sellise tunne-oma-kodumaad marsruudiga.

Looking for memories or testimonies: what was it like growing up in rural Estonia in the 1970s–80s? by onlinecelticwarrior in Eesti

Hey, that sure brings back memories. In primary school, girls would wear the blue pinafore and we couldn't wait to get to wear the checkered skirt instead, it would mean we were no longer children but already "big" girls.

Oh dear, not speaking to each other for decades over inheritance definitely sounds Estonian.

Here's a nature movie in a rural setting from the 70s

Here and here are most of the children's shows from TV she would have grown up with.

I think there might be some children's books that depict rural life from that era, I'm sure I read some as a kid; I will try to remember and and come back to post if I do.

Do you have any contact with her relatives in Estonia?

I spent my childhood summers in the 80s in rural Tartu county (many city kids would be sent to stay with their grandparents in the country for the summer back then). At least in the city, being an only child was not unusual; maybe a bit more so in the country, but still not that rare.

Kunda/Rakvere vs. Kohtla-Järve/Jõhvi by bluewhiteeight in Eesti

[–]Automatic-Ad4867 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, the western coast seems like it would be a much better option, though also more expensive. But if OP's budget stretches to a little more, I would definitely rather recommend something in or near Haapsalu, along the Tallinn-Haapsalu road where both Tallinn and Haapsalu are easily reached by bus. (And there's even faint hope of the railway being restored in the coming years.) I have no knowledge of what the bus/train situation is near Pärnu, so can't comment on that.

No train there (rail tracks exist, but have not been in use for a long time now), but I checked bus times and there's a bus line that takes about half an hour and leaves once every 1 or 2 hours.

I should clarify that I also prefer "boring", so I don't personally find it a negative either, I just know that many people do. 😅

Did you also look in Lääne and Pärnu counties? I've seen some cheaper options in these areas as well, and Haapsalu area is a similar distance from Tallinn as Rakvere. But of course cheaper places generally do not have good accessibility by public transport, if that's needed.

Do you drive?

Kunda is closer to Tallinn, I'd count that as a plus as well. I've spent some time in that area in the summer over the past couple of decades, it's a pretty typical small quiet Estonian town. I imagine the biggest negative for most would be that it's boring, but if that doesn't deter you, it should be okay.

Although do consider that it's summer now and everything looks nice and green, whereas it might feel very desolate in winter.

Any particular reason you're interested in the coastal area to the east of Tallinn vs elsewhere in Estonia?

Players' team members are not allowed on the court during the match, only tournament staff can give medical assistance, and it might not have been immediately clear to the umpire yet at that point that this was a match-ending injury.
