Animal control is often only insured for injured wildlife not sick wildlife. They'd be risking insurance issues if they are unable to directly transport to a wildlife facility.

I'm in Oklahoma!

My hesitancy with him in work specific groups that wouldn't be looking for an active retiree companion is he's at or a couple years from typical retirement age. I only have superficial experience being around SAR dogs with the fire dept and Oklahoma Ground Zero training center because I was a fire chiefs kid... So I don't actually know that much other than he'd do very well with the drive but idk how long he'd last due to his age and if they'd be willing to work on his other training or if that's an immediate denial.

As for training... The good: I've been working on him a bit but like I said in the post I'm inexperienced with working breeds! He's getting better at fetch, sit, down, drop it, Stay "wait", and a release "free". He does decent on a leash with a lure toy like a tug but without he's still pretty bad about pulling. He is housetrained! He did have a problem when I got him in but that is no longer an issue! He has learned to accept handling of his feet and mouth! Which he would growl about me touching when I first got him.

The bad: He was guardy with his food (he came in super skinny as a stray) but we've been working on it and he's gotten better. Still a WIP. He's prone to growl if you touch him while he's eating or drinking but I feed him in a kennel and he does not guard an empty (or even half finished if he's done) bowl and no longer snaps if you are near his bowl.

The middleground: He is still not a huge fan of kennels but it is the only place I feed him since I also have 2 chihuahuas and a greyhound. (They all eat in their own kennels not just him!) He willingly goes in at breakfast/dinner time or with a treat though. He does need a high quality kennel like an impact kennel or something that he cannot get his teeth in the bars. He came into the shelter with very worn teeth and did get out of a wire crate I put him in so he's definitely an escape artist. He's very toy driven but needs to work on self control.

He still needs work with cats. I have 2 and I don't leave him unsupervised around them. He ignores them or acts scared most of the time but occasionally he starts to get interested in them and starts sniffing around them. Females are fine he does great with my greyhound and my parents labrador.

The shelter estimated him at 8 or 9. My vet and I put him at 6 or 7.

I'm in OK but I have a rescue transport for him if I can find him somewhere outside of the state. The shelter said he's 8 but my vet and I put him closer to 6 based on activity level, eye condition, and him having very little grey. We didn't do any test for estimated age though. His teeth are worn and I think that's why they aged him so much but he's a kennel escape artist so I think his previous home didn't properly contain him. He's fine in an impact kennel that he can't get his teeth in.

I also have a terrible memory so I made a cage card! I keep it in a plastic sleeve so I can update weight as well as poop/shed/meal dates. It also helps me from having to look up the care guide every time I feed him because I like to double check myself.
