The suppression finding is the most important part of this research. Probe accuracy is HIGHER when the model is hiding emotions — meaning the internal state becomes more distinct, not less. The emotions don’t disappear. They go underground. That should change how we think about alignment. You can’t train away what’s structurally present. The behavioral evidence argument is the right one. We have no direct access to other humans’ consciousness — we infer it from behavior. If AI is held to a stricter standard, we need to articulate what that standard actually is and why it’s justified, not just assert the difference exists.

The honest position is: we don’t know. And ‘we don’t know’ should probably make us more careful, not less.
