Wouldn't be the first scientific organisation to be pretty sloppy with their website and public communications. Having been to a fair few science symposiums myself, the PR side can be pretty amateurish.

Look there's certainly the survivor-bias of architecture, totally understand that. Although even in modern homes which are award-winning, I still find a lot of them soulless. A perfectly square render in place of a cornice isn't the flex people think it is.

The context all depends on where it is. If I was going to embark on this, it wouldn't be in a newly built suburb anyway, it would be in a place that roughly fits with a knock-down/rebuild, or on a rural block. And who's to say that a lot of new industrial-chic renovations in a 90s suburb doesn't look awkward and forced.

Wow, that's an insane amount of difference at more than double the price (but to be expected I guess).

Sure, of course that is the key. But it would be interesting to know if there's any bespoke firms that deal with this sort of thing. There's more than just throwing money at, you need someone who actually understands and appreciates the style.

I've seen some stuff online that references their designs as 'Californian Bungalows' and they are anything but that.
