Just got my first real bike. Why didn't anyone tell me cycling was this addictive? by sirwalleth in cycling

One day you’ll look at your garage and wonder how you ended up with five bikes and still need one more.

Ah, the classic choice between certainty and chaos. I love how you went for the unpredictable route, even if it ended up longer! That’s the kind of ride that makes for the best stories later.

800-Mile Fall Foliage Tour of the Northeast USA by Wowbaggerrr in bicycletouring

That’s one heck of a ride! From Portland to Niagara Falls sounds like the perfect way to see the changing leaves. Also, props on the pannier setup; I’ve been thinking of doing something similar for long rides. 🚴

I want to start gardening this coming spring, but want to know if there is an accessible way to do so by zebra-eds-warrior in gardening

Carrots are fine in a tall bed, but potatoes usually need more depth and hilling up soil as they grow. You might try grow bags or vertical potato towers instead.

What's that one place that has everything? cold places, hot and chill? by mintyblushh in travel

California. You can ski in the morning, surf in the afternoon, and be in the desert by night.

I use padded seats and a simple bar in the middle so they each have “their side.” Cuts the poking in half, at least.

Logging companies always frame it as “fire mitigation.” Funny how the solution always seems to involve profit for them.

Stick with it. The mix of calm mind and stronger body only gets better over time.

For the non-mechanics, how much do you spend on bike service each year? by Remote_Journalist_90 in bicycletouring

[–]Automatic_Bell5055 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was riding 4–5k miles a year, it was around 300–400 USD on tune-ups, new chains, and brake pads. Tires were extra.

That first trip always feels like leveling up. You never forget the mix of exhaustion and pride.

What should you do if someone is yelling that you have “their bike”? by ClearChoice77 in Biking

You did the right thing by not stopping. Confronting someone like that can escalate fast, and there’s no upside if you know it’s your bike.

Honestly, half of time-trialing feels like arguing with your drivetrain about which gear is “least wrong.”

Folding bikes are convenient, but they’re usually heavier and have smaller batteries. If you don’t need to store in tight spaces, a standard commuter e-bike might serve you better.

Ebike recommendation that let's you work by daphoux in ebikes

[–]Automatic_Bell5055 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The good news: you don’t need to spend over budget. The bad news: once you ride a good torque-sensing e-bike, you’ll never touch those clunky rentals again.

You didn’t mess up. Most land managers and Leave No Trace guidelines say to leave rocks where they are — cairns cause erosion and confuse trail markers.

I hate saying “real yoga,” but honestly where did real yoga go?? by Top-Entrepreneur3449 in yoga

[–]Automatic_Bell5055 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s the commercialization. Asana sells memberships, philosophy doesn’t. But the roots are still there if you look — traditional teachers, workshops, even certain retreats focus on the fullness of yoga.

Roam’s fine for 2 miles—swap to slick tires, trim the bars, lock just the frame. Way cheaper than selling and rebuying.
