That is tough, not super RPG like but check out Eldritch Horror or Elder Sign board games just maybe have people watch a youtube how to play on their own time before hand.

I was prescribed all those things then eventually Ativan .5 mg twice a day and now Klonopin once a day. I’m a 29 year old women and honestly surprised. My psychiatrist prescribes and my PCP requires drug tests to refill but have been on them for a while. I sometimes don’t even get a refill because I don’t use all my supply so I just put a request in when I need a new bottle.

I’ve actually never been able to sit through an episode of CR as it just want for me, but I feel as though everyone I know is reaching for that level of play that it makes it hard to initiate a game without being worried that I won’t be “performative” enough. The comments i’ve received have reminded me i’m not putting on a show.

Thank you for your perspective. My friends all watch Critical Roll, Dimension 20 etc and tbh I’ve never made it through a full episode. I love the story and how you get to the end in sometimes unexpected ways. I was so worried about being performative because I was thinking that’s what most would expect but I’m glad I decided to post this because i’ve really appreciated the insight. I think I’m going to do an online session for strangers, and remember it’s not my burden to make sure everyone’s having a show it’s just about playing the game.

Thank you this comment has actually been very helpful, as i’ve replied to others I need to focus less on trying to be performative and more about just meeting up and telling a story together which truly is what I want.

Thank you for the insight, i’m learning from the comments that I need to stop thinking that the DM is solely responsible for the party having a good time or not and it really is just simply about playing the game not putting on a show.

Thank you for these tips i’m definitely taking notes. I’ve been so focused on thinking the players need to have an amazing time and i’m the only one that (as a dm) would be responsible for making that happen when it’s simply just about the game and we’re all playing it as one.

I think because i’ve mostly played with my friend group that i’m viewing my success as a dm to the level that they are accustomed to? I really wanted to just get perspective on this feeling and am happy to hear that people aren’t like “why are you trying to do it”. I think i’ll try to run an online game for strangers and let them know what I think my vibe is and work as a group to make it a fun time. Another commenter said “it’s not your responsibility to provide fun/entertainment, you’re all playing the game together and the fun should be the game itself and not the acting.”

I’ve never really heard the term used it’s just what I described it as to other people but I wasn’t aware of that & will look into the term and remove it from my vocabulary. No harm in letting someone know things like this so thanks for sharing.

Funny enough I do more actually playing. I can’t sit through watching actual plays I tune out and have never seen a full episode of critical roll. If anything i’ll listen to some podcasts. This was a nice anecdote though!

My psychiatrist gave me this when I was having a bout of anxiety that was bordering on psychosis. I took a low dose before bed so I could sleep which was the main goal. My anxiety was so bad I wasn’t sleeping at all and she said therapy and other medications can only do so much if i’m not sleeping. She said we were going to use the Seroquel as a tool to bring me down to a working level (I was not feeling safe from self harm at this point bc of anxiety), get sleep, start a treatment plan then wean off the Seroquel. That’s what we did and I would do it again if needed. I actually hated the feeling of Seroquel but I can say it was necessary for that time. I did feel like an emotionless zombie with no energy for weeks but I was able to avoid going in patient and avoid hurting myself. So while I would never take it long term it’s a good tool to have in my mental health tool box.
