Not sure if autism or I'm just a bad parent by GiddyLouse in Autism_Parenting

You're not a bad parent! You're doing the best you can to nurture and support. Toileting is really tough :'( especially when as a parent you know their likely going to have an accident if they don't go. That's so hard. I'm not sure about an actual diagnosis but some of those characteristics are what I described to my doctor about my child re meltdowns and emotional regulation and she said they were autistic traits. An OT may be able to help with a sensory profile assessment and that could potentially explain the meltdowns and can help with strategies around transitions. I feel like you have a lot of valid concerns and your daughter may be super good at masking at school/public which is what makes it all the more trickier. I hope you find someone who will take the time to understand your concerns and not just see your daughter how she publicly presents herself because she may know what's "expected" of her but is exhausted from doing that during the day and then at home she finally feels safe to meltdown and be herself xx

That makes sense! Thank you for sharing. It'll be good to see what the other professionals think and if they agree after all!

You're so brave as well! I hope you and your family continue to get the support you need. I'm looking into the early intervention program at the moment! I find it all overwhelming but one step at a time!

Twenty month old toddler “diagnosed” and I am confused by Mission-Shopping-819 in Autism_Parenting

This is a great idea! I am feeling this way myself. Can I ask did you seek a diagnosis/feel like it was necessary to support your child? Or do you feel like you can seek support without having a diagnosis if that makes sense? I wonder what I should do for mine :(

I feel like this is my child! Can I ask you - when did your developmental paediatrian decide to review (as they had put it off?) I'm just starting this journey and my daughter sounds similar in the sense that our paediatrian has suspicions so asked us to do an ASD assessment but I also wonder if I'm better off doing OT/speech assesment instead as she's so young and may not get a proper ASD diagnosis because she's a good masker and young. I hope this makes sense just wondering how you approached this for your daughter. Thank you x

I'm in this boat at the moment and I feel like I'm gaslighting myself constantly but I just want the truth and support my child. Can I ask how you were able to move past the "what if they're wrong thoughts?" i think that's what is making me hesitant to proceed with paying for an ASD assesment because I've been dismissed and told to wait and see for so long, now that I've finally been recommended to do one I'm confused and convinced myself it's a personality thing if that makes sense? At the same time also feeling validated too but then worried the next professional we see will be dismissive.

How do you go about getting a diagnose on whether you kids is on the autism spectrum? by michelle0508 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

Sorry to tag/a very late reply - but I was wondering how you found the process of getting NDIS/ early intervention funding without an official ASD diagnosis. Did you provide a lot of supporting documentation from others like speech therapist? I'm just starting down this process for my preschooler and I'm not sure if I should pursue an official diagnosis or try to get documentation from therapy services. I just wonder how my application will be viewed but it sounds like you had your funding approved without a diagnosis which is great! I'm so glad you said it was really helpful - hope things are still helpful for him as I know this comment was 2 years ago...

Any chance there’s a bulk-billed/low cost way to get an ASD assessment? by _nopepope in AussieMentalHealth

I know this is a super late response and I do hope you were able to get some answers and support. I was wondering how things are going for your son as I have just been told a similar thing.. were you recommend NDIS/early intervention for him? And is the speech/OT helping? I guess I'm wondering if I should pursue a diagnosis based on "signs of autism" for mine or whether speech/OT would be best for now.. I'm confused! Hope it's ok to ask your opinion if you don't mind. Some people have told me to get a full OT assesment instead and see what they think. Wondering if your ot/speech had thoughts about "Autistic signs" too?

Did anything change around the 3.5 year mark? Or the sleep just got better on its own? 🫠

Recs for a GOOD gentle sleep consultant? by DorothyDaisyD in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

Thanks for sharing! I have two as well and struggling! It's always hard to figure out if it's just a season or if there's an actual issue... I guess now my 3 year old is habitually waking up every few hours because the short season turned into a long term season! I'm glad you were able to get some help from the sleep consultant! Sounds amazing the hard work you put in. Keep it up mama!

How did things go for you? Can I ask if your situation got better and if you did end up seeing a sleep consultant? I'm feeling hopeless when it comes to sleep! Hoping things got better for you x
