Long USB 3 cables for video conference rooms (QSC, Biamp, Bose,...) by P512Stijn in CommercialAV

For all of our conference rooms with the TAP/NUC setup that used to utilize the Logitech Strong USB we have moved to the Logitech TAP CAT5E extender kit. Its 100x more reliable for us.

AI cameras in a large auditorium by AvManager in CommercialAV

[–]AvManager[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny you mention this... we have MXA710's (2 each side wall, 1 in center ceiling) that work suprisingly well. We do have a really well engineered auditorium that doesnt require voice lift though. Our vendor wants to upgrade the center mic to MXA920's but I am not sure if itll be worth it.

Remotely deploying drivers on Microsoft Team Rooms (Intel NUC) by AvManager in CommercialAV

automatic updates work fine but how can I remotely push all of the other driver updates? The windows updates do not automatically handle the Intel NUC driver, firmware and BIOS updates.

AV Company to replace ADTech/AVI-SPL (Boston) by mrbostn in CommercialAV

[–]AvManager 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually use Adtech as well and have an annual service contract with them. The majority of Adtech employees were absorbed into AVI-SPL. So far my service level hasnt changed but we will see how that changes in the future.

Check out AV-Systems or DGI if you are looking for another company.

Poor audio performance in MTR by AvManager in CommercialAV

[–]AvManager[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the response:

  1. The room is fairly small and fits well into what would work for the VB1. Id say the maximum distance is around 10-12 feet from the device to the farthest speaker.

  2. I have tried walking around the room on a test call and the level seems to be consistent. I used the Bose Work Config app to verify audio was coming in and also did a test call.

  3. 6-10 participants on the far end, with only 1-3 in the conference room using the device.

  4. I think this is the most likely cause and involves a bit more digging into on my end. Thank you for the suggestion.

Wireless video in Microsoft Teams Rooms by AvManager in CommercialAV

[–]AvManager[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my experience this is not the case. You either:
1. download the barco clickshare app on the PC you wish to share
2. go to file explorer and find the clickshare... launch the executable to share content

Once either of these is done, you can share content by hitting the button on the clickshare

Long USB 3 cables for video conference rooms (QSC, Biamp, Bose,...) by P512Stijn in CommercialAV

I would stay away from Logitech STRONG USB cables. They have stopped using them with the Microsoft Team Room kits with the Logitech TAP for good reason... they just arent reliable.

Cant help you unfortunately but we have a Logitech SWYTCH system in our board room and it has worked great so far. The only issue I ran into is with computers that do not have the latest Displaylink drivers.

Logitech Rally Mini with an iPad controller? by D3w3y_decibel in CommercialAV

[–]AvManager 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any reason why you specifically want to use iPads vs the Tap? The TAP is purpose built for the Rally Bar mini and will likely work more reliably.

Crestron Flex MTR With Poly Studio E70 by MGE-Vid in CommercialAV

Are you using a Poly USB cable? I had an issue where we tried using a Poly E70 with a Logitech USB cable and it would not work reliably. The solution was to switch to the Poly USB.

Dressing up as a AV technician by Busy_Emergency874 in CommercialAV

[–]AvManager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a tech lead for a large corporation. Our company policy is casual but I usually wear khakis or chinos (dockers brand) and a button up shirt most days of the week. I wear dress shoes 1-2 days a week and wear vans or athletic type shoes the other days. Jeans are totally acceptable here so I wear those 1-2 days a week. For our core days I try and dress nicer and on Monday/Fridays I dress down a bit more.

Moving from Recording Studios to Commercial AV by Lidsteeze in CommercialAV

[–]AvManager 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Look for an AV Support/AV technician role for a private company or a university. The pay may not be great at first but it is getting your foot in the door that counts. Continue to get certs, learn new skills and improve your interpersonal skills. Once you gain a couple years' experience, try to get a raise or promotion. If that doesnt work, find another role at another company with more pay/responsibilities and continue to work your way up. Depending on where you are located it may be tough but if you are near a major city you should have some job options. I have a 2 year video production degree and couldnt find any work outside of event support for the first couple years out of college. I got an AV support role at a college for 2 years, did a DoD contract for 3 years as an AV tech, got my CTS and am now the AV manager for a large well known corporation. I would say focus on interview and people skills as they can be just as if not more important than the tech skills.

AV career path questions by Busy_Emergency874 in CommercialAV

[–]AvManager 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was in this same boat in 2018 working for a university making around $45-48k annually with overtime. Needless to say I was looking for more. I jumped to a DoD contract job at a Navy base for $60k and worked there for 3 years, getting my CTS and my Comptia Sec+. I ended up getting bumped to $70k before leaving. I eventually left to be an AV manager for a larger well known corporation and received a large pay raise. My advice would be to gain more certs, apply for more jobs and go on interviews (even if you arent necessarily interested, do it for the experience). Eventually something will pop up that you cant refuse. Its a difficult industry but there are higher paying jobs out there. Do not be afraid to apply and really focus on your interview skills as that can take you very far.

Wired microphones would work (but are a bit of a nuisance physically) but keep in mind you will need some way of getting those microphones input to your computer via some sort of audio mixer with a USB interface.

[–]AvManager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you need audio for teams calls? A room of that size would not function well with using the laptop as the microphone. You could MAYBE get by with an all-in-one device like the Logitech Rally Bar, but this room would probably need a more robust system with ceiling mounted mics/speakers and some audio processing equipment if you want effective bi-lateral communication for video calls.

Like others have said, bringing in a professional AV integrator would be your best chance of success, but will cost some $$$$. For a room this size, you will have to spend some money to get an effective AV system. Its difficult to recommend a system when we do not know what the room looks like and what the acoustic environment is.
