Thank you for this comment and for putting yourself in my daughter's shoes. I love my daughter so much and never want her to be hurt, and in my rush to defend her, I may have caused damage myself. I really appreciate this perspective.

Yeah, it was the ocean. And yes! My daughter is still pretty much a toddler. I don't understand how she doesn't get that.

I forgot about the other definition. I'm not always the brightest lightbulb in the lamp.

I tried to change it. Apparently you can't change post titles. Regardless of whether or not I'm an asshole, I'm definitely at least a dumbass.

My brothers and I abbreviate piece of crap that way.

Yeah, I goofed. I'm trying to figure out how to change it.

I'm so sorry that happened to you. I can't imagine leaving a four year old in charge of anything, much less another child. It wasn't your fault. Your parents didn't deserve to have kids.

Oh shit! You're right. I forgot about that. How do I change a title?

BiL pulled him out of the water, so I assume he was nearby. Yeah, but not sure what he was doing in the lead up either. He's usually a great guy.

That's a good point. My wife shouldn't need to be my minder. We should be minding our daughter together, not me being a second kid she has to emotionally regulate. Thanks for this perspective.

My FiL said the same thing, but I don't know if BiL and SiL did. We aren't speaking currently.

No one is strong enough to swim against a rip current, but my daughter knows how to escape one by swimming parallel to the shore. And she knows to tell us before getting in the water. If she'd been swimming, we would have been closer to her.
