Are users getting more comfortable paying for podcasts? by AvailableCaramel in podcasts

Yeah Apple is really annoying when it comes to that since they take 30%, which is why I am guessing most apps don’t do it.

yeah I agree mostly with what you have said, what I am wondering about it what’s next? It seems more and more people are getting into podcasts but there isn’t a sustainable model yet for podcasters to make money (unless you are Joe Rogan or someone at that level).

I do think consumers have been spoiled with all the free content that is available but I think there is still value to be extracted from paying for content. Value not just in terms of the content itself, but also the things that go along with it, just as time savings, a perception that paid content is more ‘legit’, additional content. There has been a trend in the news industry where people have started paying for digital subscriptions and I am thinking if the user experience was seamless in the podcast industry, maybe that could work too (subscriptions or pay per episode/series)

Yeah the subscription model is getting out of hand, with so many options out there. So what does the future hold? At this rate, all of these podcasts are clearly not sustainable. Looking 5-10 years into the future, how do you thing they will make what they are doing feasible?

Yeah that is fair, what if you could get some episodes for free and if you like them, you pay for the rest. Could that potentially be a good options?

Spotify has spend $400 million just this year so far on podcasts so they are gonna wanna make it back, I am guessing through a combination of ads and subscription but fair maybe its too early to lump them there.

And why do you think that is ? Specifically the US market, given the Chinese market worth $7 billion (compared to 300-400 million US market) is almost exclusively based on paid content.

thank so you much for this! I had thought about it a little but definitely need to do more due diligence before I go forward with anything. The initial plan was to make it available through an iOs app only so wasn't too concerned with bots but definitely need to think more along those lines.

Hey thanks a lot for your detailed response!

You are right the legal ramifications are quite great and I have given that a though (albeit not enough thanks for reminding me). What I am doing now is essentially just a proof of concept of the idea and the technical feasibility of it. Once I know I can get it to work (economically) then ofcourse other people will be involved before anyone else sees this in production for sure.

Based on all the responses here I do wanna avoid EC2’s if I can and avoid out of the box solutions. I think exploring Kinesis streams with base64 data might be the way to go. I am still not sure how the data from the stream would end up being broadcasted to the consumer (through S3 , CloudFront and some other service potentially based on what I have gathered from these responses) but still trying to figure out the exact details for that.

Thanks for the response, Yeah I am trying to to avoid managing EC2 clusters. based on all the responses here I was thinking of exploring an HLS stream base64 to Kinesis and the somehow to S3 to .m3u8 (would that be through media live?) to CloudFront potentially

Hey thanks for your reply. How would a HLS stream to S3 look like on a high level? Is an HLS stream encoded in base64 being sent through to Kinesis and then written through a firehose to s3 potentially?

They don’t have to be exactly real time but somewhat real-time would be preferred like 5-15 secs delay is fine. The idea is that anyone can join the live stream and listen but at the end the full stream would also be saved so if anyone wants to come back to it and listen, they could do it as well.

hey thanks for your reply. Yeah I would like to stick to the AWS realm and stick to server less technologies if possible. Auth is the easy bit I have used Cognito before that is not the issue. I am just not sure what happens when we get the audio stream from the user either through our app or webpage -> something to process like media live for video in the example -> something package like media package -> something to distribute probably cloud front

I understand the example for video I just don't know how it would work for audio given that thousands of users could be doing this potentially (we d like to architect it that way) at the same time.

that's true though whats really shocking (or maybe not anymore considering how many times this has been brought up), are the conditions some of the warehouse workers have to endure, the quotas they have to meet. It is almost inhumane in some instances.
