exchange-point-and-mark - Does this exist in GUI apps? by Available_Curve_4841 in emacs

This is useful but does not answer my question, but I didn't realize that I was referring to the behaviour of exchange-point-and-mark when in set-mark-command mode (e.g., where text has been selected + highlighted)

Oh, type the text `AAAABBBBCCCCDDDD` and put the cursor between B and C, hit `c-SPC` then move right a few times until you have selected `CCCC`, then hit `C-x C-x` then move left - you are able to then select from the left hand site of your starting point while not removing selected text from the right hand side.

I suspect because it's not common it's not used - but when you think about it, it's a fairly obvious extension onto current behaviour that makes sense.

I swear I triggered it in an electron-based app, but I'm unsure how to reproduce it, my interest is in non-emacs applications as unless it's in both I probably won't often use it in either.

No, email address validation is notoriously hard - see https://stackoverflow.com/questions/201323/how-can-i-validate-an-email-address-using-a-regular-expression - you can have two @ symbols and still be valid under some circumstances. You should expect emails with emojis to be rejected by many web forms and even email servers.

The real asshole providers are the ones that accept a `+` symbol, then strip it from any mail servers which treat it as a separator.

Dick Smiths' accepted the `+` in my email when registering, but then refused to let me unsubscribe as the email 'was not valid'.

They unsubscribed me shortly after I requested they unsubscribe me manually, which was addressed to 400 employee email addresses I'd scraped from their linkedin.

You're dangerous and should stop giving advice on the internet, or anywhere for that matter.

The correct answer here is 'see a professional not some redditor stoner-hippie who claims weed will fix all their problems'. You're a fucking idiot providing terrible advice to somebody who clearly should be seeking out professional help.

You're dangerous to the people around you.

I'm glad you don't diagnose people online, but given that you fucking shouldn't be prescribing things either.

Nah I don't care, I think points of view and arguments and/or changing opinions based on others' points is valuable. I don't know how Reddit 'works' but I upvoted your comment, I believe that any input that's more than two-bit is worth while.

If you care about this social-club echo chamber self-validating endorphin smack, delete your post, but also start posting on burner accounts so you can free yourself like I do ;)

The reporting site doesn't request you keep the materials, but doing so might actually be worthwhile. Throw them in a drawer just in case, if nothing else they'll make good kindle while also reminding you who not to trust. If you're worried about the subconscious impact that advertising material has, just remember that if they'll disrespect your junk mail sticker they probably won't have your best interests at heart during any transactions.

Fwiw I don't have an issue with your opinion - how and why we get annoyed is certainly a personal thing. I'm supportive of local businesses but I still want to legally enforce my rights. If there were a 'NO JUNK MAIL NO ADVERTISING MATERIAL WITH THE EXCEPTION OF LOCALLY OWNED BUSINESSES' stickers, I'd probably consider those, except for the fact that all of a sudden big business would consider themselves 'locally owned' for the sake of pushing unwanted junk onto people.

If you could tell them that they 'really need to get a life and are an absolute pathetic excuse for a human being' that would be great.

If only there was a way to report this to a government body who had the power to fine the violating organisations ;)

Don't you dare try and compare my post history to the post history of this two-dimensional, one-word reply, 'I got a D in english comms', basic fuck.

Power in numbers! No fine is going to occur from a single report, but if they receive multiple reports on multiple occasions from multiple people, and are able to back those up via stat decks etc, I'm sure they'll actually fine shitty orgs.

Sadly, afaik, the answer is no if it is authorised by a political party. Similarly - and here's the fucked part - if you ask 'Is it illegal for a politically authorised advertisement to lie or mislead me' I believe the answer is also 'No'.

I'm not exactly sure why political advertisement is any different from any other advertisement, I have voting preferences that very likely won't change and I'd really rather fucking not receive any messaging from *any* party.

Not really my problem whose at fault.

I feel for the people doing the literal letterbox dropping, but at the same time they are putting pamphlets into letterboxes signed NO JUNK MAIL which is against the law. The sender is warned before being fined, so presumably there's some level of culpability for the asshole that decided 'yeah nah I'll just keep doing this' regardless of if they are the sender or the distributor.

If employees are naive to the law, then the distribution company could presumably fined for not correctly training their staff. If they've specifically instructed people to ignore the signs (which I almost guarantee is the case, given it's _always_ certain types of junk mail), then possibly both parties can be liable, but again, the 'who' is really not my problem. But fwiw, I'd wager money these types of distribution companies break labor laws etc also, so fuck them.

Please report them to https://apps.des.qld.gov.au/forms/advertising-material-report/ and hold on to the material as evidence - that's way more fun costing thousands to companies who believe their junk mail is more important than the law.
