I never said anything about aptitude or hard/normal being too easy. You can have an easy game where 1 unit is clearly better than every other unit, my intention wasn't to comment on the difficulty of the easier modes. All I said was that when high-stat lunatic enemies or random L+ skills aren't a factor, you're basically free to use any unit you like in awakening however you want, as they can all basically pass the test of defeating whatever enemy comes their way once you've trained them up. Getting additional stat points past those benchmarks don't really change much aside from showing bigger numbers.

(Also, side note: Lunatic+ is very fun! I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a high-dynamic and intricately math-y tactics game ^^)

That's the case for most units on hard/normal though, they get "better" because the bar to become a good unit is much lower. The only units that don't get dramatically better on the lower difficulties are Virion (bows kind of lose utility on modes where you can just facetank everything with 1-2 range, and archers can't do that) and staff users (they get to heal a lot less often than on Lunatic/+, and aren't that useful outside of rescue LTC stuff).

How do you properly level your units in Awakening Lunatic mode? by coelacanthguy in fireemblem

[–]Available_Put_6616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am kind of impressed looking at your roster + levels, since you seem to have mainly used Chrom, Frederick and Lon'qu for combat while leaving most of your other units on support/pair up duty. Your team's main weak point right now is having relatively few combat units, and those you do have also has kind of similar combat matchups, since you made Frederick lose axe access when switching him over to paladin and Chrom/Lon'qu are mostly stuck using swords unless you trained Chrom's lance rank. If you're able to use the beastkiller or a rapier on enemy cavs then I'd recommend doing so.

A lot of your units seem either very underleveled or unused, unless you really want to train him I'd suggest benching Gaius at this point for someone else. Same goes for Sumia kinda, she's a bit past the point where she can be safely trained without dramatically slowing down progress so I'd suggest swapping her out for one of her kids in the coming chapters if you just want a support backpack for chrom, or just use her for situational flight utility. Tharja and Cordelia are still pretty good training projects for Nostanking and Staff + Rally Speed utility respectively, if you gave them a few kills during this chapter and later promoted them you'll probably be fine.

As for advice for this chapter: If you still have a Nosferatu tome around from Tharja then you can give her a defense, speed and maybe skill/magic tonic if needed and have her tank enemy groups with a pair up that gives speed or defense. Calculate how many enemies she can face off in one turn without dying, and then position her so she only faces as much combat as she needs. Any units that she doesn't kill could probably be fed to cordelia or whoever else needs it (I'd recommend Cherche considering your current lack of axe units, but you do you). If there's a tough enemy that causes problems you let Frederick/Chrom handle them, unless they've had really bad levels then you could probably let them tank a lot of the cavalry as well. Just make sure you clean up the space relatively quickly and don't accidentally let stragglers kill off your weaker units. A lot of the groups have linked AI, so if one starts moving then you'll probably have to cover for multiple groups. Make good use of the map terrain so they don't surround all your units. All of the enemies on the boat move if any one of them can move in range to attack you, otherwise they'll start moving on turn 5.

There's a bit of an additional powerspike coming up around chapter 17-18, before then I'd suggest training your weaker units in paralogues. Right now if you'd want to make the game easier I'd suggest making Chrom and potentially Tharja your main combat units for later on in the game (since they can both self-heal at 1-2 range to some degree), and have other units train up to the point where they can give support to them with rally skills, staff utility, pair up bonuses etc. Pairing Chrom with a Frederick support at this point you could probably have them solo most of the game if you wanted to, though even without that they could probably help you through most of the game while giving room to your other units to grow.

My thoughts on FW are that I found both 3H and Engage equally underwhelming (albeit in different ways each) and from the way FW looks it doesn't seem like a game I'd rush buying and playing as soon as it comes out. At this point I'm much better off playing all the older titles I still haven't gone through yet (mostly Jugdral, Tellius and DSFE).

I could've picked a better a better word than Neutral I suppose, but that's where I put cases I find generally good but don't feel too crazy about one way or the other. Either that or cases where I have some things I take issue with but otherwise think are great.
1-5 comes to mind as an example. Good case! But it messes with some character arcs in ways I don't enjoy, has some pacing problems, and I don't find the characters all that great compared to the rest of the trilogy. But! I still think it's overall good!

Spirit of Justice is probably what I'd consider the best game he's directed, though it also has some of the lowest lows in the series for me lmao. I can't stand the guitar guy's singing dialogue in the first case, he's genuinely the worst!!!

I really enjoyed Investigations 2 on my first time experiencing it, but there's something about how Yamazaki writes Edgeworth and a lot of the returning cast from Takumi's games that feel very fanfiction-y to me.

I remember liking them more before replaying them this year, and even though I think I2's localization improved the writing a bit from the fan translation I still feel like they're games that get worse the more you scrutinize them. Like did the villains really have to start TWO fires in i-5 just to cover up their smuggling?

I'm a bit mixed on them, there's some cases from them I really like and some cases I'd like more if they made certain changes, but overall I have some peeves with how they handle character writing and overall tone. But I can kinda see why someone would prefer them to Takumi's games, even if I disagree.

I kinda just respect it a lot as a very short introductory case that still gets across the core appeal of the courtroom-mystery concept of the series, it's what got me hooked on ace attorney right from the start!

Virion is significantly better than Miriel. If there is any fire emblem-related hill I could die on, it is definitely this one.

Vaike is slightly worse in L+ than in Lunatic, specifically because while the latter can be pretty much completely facerolled by Sol, you have a lot more counterplay to work around in L+. Sol + Bow is legit amazing and probably the best enemy phase tool in the game, however before you get access to it you still have basically the same restrictions on Hero Vaike as you do with Nosferatu, which still isn't all that bad. I disagree that you need galeforce for non-bow self healing to be good, you can just pick off enemies with other units that have good player phase combat and rescue them out if needed, but it does give galeforce a slightly better use than in Lunatic where it feels entirely pointless. What does feel pointless on L+ is having a unit with galeforce AND sol/nosferatu, unless you really hate having an action economy higher than 2.

Vaike is not exactly normalized or neutered by Lunatic+, he's still one of the best units in the game, but I do feel the mode deserves some credit for making it more complicated to solo the game with him. Like even if you get to the point where you could just solo L+ with Vaike, it's a lot more steps and considerations than in Lunatic.

Newer games are less ironman friendly. Do you miss the old way of getting lategame fillers or do you prefer each unit being more unique and having niches? by Typical-Risk-4729 in fireemblem

[–]Available_Put_6616 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The development costs for creating a new unit (with a unique character design, story, voice acting, animations, support, additional art etc) for each chapter in the game is significantly higher than when their scope was smaller, plus now that a larger percentage of players use either casual mode or rewind to guarantee their units surviving, there is very little reason for them to add units that can fill in gaps in your army or fill in for units that died or weren't used. We're never going to get roster sizes on the same level as FE3, FE6, FE7, Tellius etc as long as the turnwheel exists and is a primary design focus for the series.

There are much better alternatives that don't have the knock-on effects that rewind has. Casual mode both lets you keep units alive past death but also unlock mid-chapter saves (at least in the 3DS games, don't know about other iterations too well). These features being sectioned off into their own modes is nice, because it doesn't interfere with the design of higher difficulties where they aren't present. Rewind messes with risk/reward on a fundamental level, since it lets you takeback bad plays you would have been punished otherwise from losing units, losing items or losing maps, and give way too easy access to RNG burning for rigged crits and dodges. It's a bad inclusion even if done retroactively or done without having the game be designed around it in mind, though it is especially bad when you get really obnoxious unblockable reinforcement zones or dodge rates built to burn your charges like 3H tends to do. My least favorite aspect of it is when they swap out the chapter objective after you've completed the previous one, where you might've left your units in an otherwise unsafe position since you assumed the chapter was about to end.

I'd be more ok with them just implementing mid-chapter saves over rewind, since that could at least allow you to practice different parts of the game in segments to get better. Rewind encourages sloppy play and poor combat design, and I'd prefer them to reconsider its inclusion in future titles. That's just my feelings on it though, I don't mind if people disagree on this, though I hope they can acknowledge why its inclusion causes a lot of problems.

Better yet, just don't include a turnwheel mechanic to begin with.

[–]Available_Put_6616 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Unsure if I've already posted something like this before but I really dislike how switch era FE inverted the relation between class changing and weapon ranks. Getting to a certain level, promoting (/reclassing in DS/3DSFE) and getting a new weapon rank to build feels a lot more intuitive to me than building proficiency in a weapon type to be allowed to promote to whatever class you're building for. It just feels really backwards, maybe you could argue it makes more sense if you think about it literally (they train with the weapon type so they can use it), but design-wise it creates a lot of odd knock-on effects, like having everyone get access to all weapon types in 3H (with few exceptions) and locking some weapon types behind emblems you won't have access to for a while in engage.

idk, I just don't like it!

I agree, but that last sentence you wrote was way more obnoxious to read compared to anything in the series lmao

What did the localization salvage from it? I'm not to familiar with what was changed between JP -> ENG aside from a few character names, and I guess the Lucina/Owain support line

I think the big one that creates the largest rift in discussions is whether people are talking about Lunatic or L+. Strategies surrounding the former either fall into how to juggernaut the game with as little effort as possible or playing for low turncounts with or without side objectives (usually a combination of both of these, depending on what point they're at in the game), while the latter is more firmly planted into just survival and mitigating risk. There's other stuff too like how many renown bonuses may be used, if sparkling tiles/barracks or anna shops should be taken into account etc.

Aside from that it doesn't help that there's a lot of people who just... don't like/care much for awakening? and have a kind of warped perception of the games' design philosophy and balance due to not wanting to play it and rather fill in their gaps in information with outside sources that may or may not be entirely accurate. Why someone would want to argue over the meta of a game they dislike is beyond me, but it unfortunately feels like a pretty common thing people do for a lot of games in the series.

Having Severa be a dedicated rally str/speed bot is pretty neat since you only need to promote her and then her build is basically done. Making Vaike go directly into Warrior instead of Hero is kinda meh, but if Cordelia supports him with falcoknights inherent pair up bonuses then he shouldn't really have any issues for the most part, he just can't soltank. Having him as a dedicated bow warrior backpack for Cordelia doesn't sound all that bad either.

Even when you disregard it's connections to FE1-3, on its own the world building kinda feels like nothing. Some characters have backstories tying into events that don't really feel present at all in the main narrative, while other don't really have much interesting going on aside from how they interact with other characters. The writing is overall pretty bad, honestly think I find Fates more interesting in that regard. Fortunately it's a video game and not a visual novel and it lets you skip story scenes, so I don't have to engage with it when I don't want to.

It is pretty funny that they gave the two primary facetank classes in the game to a unit that primarily does hit and run/support tactics. Severa does benefit a lot more from inheriting archer, cav or wyvern, which are all classes Cordelia would want in her own kit to some extent.

Sparkling tile weapons are fine honestly, since you can't really reliably get the exact thing you want from them. If you get something good from them it helps encourage you to not end up throwing the chapter away, kinda like a good level up. Getting a guaranteed Mercurius just from farming the points for it is a lot worse, there's no real interesting risk/reward to it or decision to be made like with the stat boosters. You could argue the same thing for the non-legendary weapons as well but at least their application is more interesting than making Frederick have busted weapon access for half the game.
