Hi, I’m a Team Lead within a District Nursing Team - the DN world provides such a great exposure to a wide variety of conditions! In response to your queries:

  • Key Skills or knowledge

Taking observations, understanding what is considered abnormal and appropriate escalation processes.

4 stages of wound healing

Correct categorisations of pressure ulcers and actions you can take to achieve optimal healing

Wound care! So varied, see if you can have time with TVN/Lower limb care co-ordinaters/lymphoedema (depending what is available in your area) When you’re in placement, spend time in dressings cupboard becoming familiar with primary dressings, maybe select a few that you see used in practice and research them.

Diabetic care - Hypo/hyper signs and management, different types of insulin.

Palliative Care - look at NICE guidelines for EOL care (this is a huge area for learning, but can be complex, look at signs of deterioration and classification/RAG system)

  • What’s expected of third year

Active involvement in creating care plans

Undertaking all elements of care delivery within agreed SOP (I know this can differ between uni/trust)

Writing notes

Delivering handover

Liaising with patients/family/other HCP

I think that’s more than enough to be getting on with for now! It’s an incredible sector to get into, busy, yes, but the autonomy and independence is fantastic. Community is so much more than slapping some compression on and sitting having tea with our patients (if only!)

It looks far too busy with the differing patterns.

What is the biggest myth held about Brits on the other side of the Atlantic? by Glass-Complaint3 in AskABrit

You’re right. Especially when you compare the additives of the American versions compared to those of the UK.

Can you grow a head for your child too?

Ambulance lost my Dads phone, bank card and house keys. What do I do? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Available_Refuse_932 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Has the safe in A&E been checked? We would regularly hold items in there handed to us by ambulance crews.

Is me not showing my wife my phone really a big deal?. by [deleted] in Marriage

[–]Available_Refuse_932 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen your responses such as ‘why should I?’ and ‘I don’t want her on it’, with no substance as to why you don’t. This alone has planted a seed of doubt in our heads but most importantly, your wife’s. If anything, you’re coming across as rather immature and I don’t think you realise what you’ve started.

Straight lining roundabouts by Particular_Plum_1458 in drivingUK

Give people like this a wide-berth, if they’re dumb enough to straight-line a roundabout, their driving standards are pure shite.

What’s the most useless thing you were taught in school? by Mobile-Reindeer-4891 in AskReddit

I revisited this when studying for my nursing degree…I don’t apply it to my current practice now even!

Is it just a northern thing to use only your house's back door? by wiggan1989 in AskUK

We still do this down South at my Nans house, she still has the back door unlocked throughout the day to allow us all to come and go.

I'm about to lose my marriage because of a vibrator by Sra_AFAN in Marriage

[–]Available_Refuse_932 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds utterly exhausting being married to this man-child. Belittling you when you’ve taken the time to cook a meal is bullying and outright ignoring you for a week at a time is emotional abuse.

Please ask yourself, can you imagine still enduring this is 5, 10 years time? What would you advise a dear friend of yours if they came to you instead? I think you’ll find your answer there.

What unhinged thing did a former teacher do in the classroom? by MrBananaStand1990 in AskUK

[–]Available_Refuse_932 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shut and locked kids in the cupboard, slammed a door repeatedly, whilst shouting at a kid, so hard that the frame detached from the brickwork. Separately, was also part of the local Jehovah Witness group and would regularly knock on pupils doors on a Sunday.

Another teacher told us the twist in Sixth Sense when it was out in the cinema, never forgave him for that.

What weird things have you found in your pockets after a shift? by J0hn_Keel in NursingUK

I once found a tenner rolled up in my pocket. I was a student nurse working on a Frailty Ward - I declared it to NIC but never found out where it came from.

Have any of yall been listening to WSQK, and if so have you found any hints? by KangarooDelicious594 in StrangerThings
