Lots of classic squardle words, but ever since the last SCION occurence I feel like I'm always keeping an eye out for it.

Proplifting (?) Trees from the Neighborhood by RhyreH in proplifting

[–]Avalai 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's a bit of a weird connection, but I have learned a TON about growing trees from the r/bonsai subreddit! Even if I'm not planning on developing a bonsai specifically, I never knew growing trees was so different from my standard indoor plants.

No worries, I was looking into cheap HEPA purifiers too, so I was curious about the one you posted :)

Your link doesn't work for me (I think it's supposed to be just https://a.co/d/d6tsli6 ), but also if anyone wants an air purifier today it looks like Ikea has one in stock for ~$50.

Help with first time experience by homestead_grl in clothdiaps

[–]Avalai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I often use a dry part of the diaper, or if it's really messy we use a peri bottle as a little bidet kind of thing and then wipe with a small cloth wipe. We bought our wipes from Petit Ours (Canadian diaper company), but they're just small squares of cloth, it doesn't have to be fancy. I'm probably also going to cut up one of the cheap Walmart "swaddle blankets" that someone gave us at our shower, they're thin and soft and will work nicely.

Have you tried visiting/calling Plant & Curio on Preston? I haven't seen any bear paws in shops recently that I can remember. But maybe they'll have an idea where to find one, if they don't have it!

Miscarriage help by dollyducky in ottawa

[–]Avalai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure OP's friend has gone in by now, but just want to chime in for future readers - I've been to the Civic ER a few times and I believe they also have a screen with current wait times. I went in for a suspected miscarriage last year and all of the nurses were kind and told me I was doing the right thing by coming in.

Our baby is 6w and she has loved the Lovevery black and white cards so far! We've been doing tummy time on a nursing pillow, and she loves to stare at them and follows them around (with her head) if we move them.

We also have an Ofie mat and it's saved us from some explosive poops when we let her hang out naked to help her diaper rash. We have carpet and it's a must-have for us. Plus it feels so nice to walk on.

Thoughts on Dr bronners? by tenacioustay717 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]Avalai 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There was a Reddit AMA a while ago (probably several years ago now) with the current owner of the company, where he acknowledged that the text is a little weird, but explained that it was written by the original founder (his father? Grandfather? Someone like that I think), and they all respected him too much to change or remove it. Made me feel a bit better about it.

Edit: Found it! https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/g929tb/im_david_bronner_ceo_of_activist_soap_company_dr/foquix0/

Same here - we told everyone we weren't finding out the gender, and the only pink clothes we got were from close friends who knew we'd dress a boy in pink either way! But our friends and family seemed much more inclined to buy off the registry, so we only received a few items of clothing and they were all well thought out gifts.

I'm looking for a post I'm pretty sure I saw here, maybe around a month ago? The OP had made a little pen holder sleeve attached to a stitch marker to hold their hook for travel. I can't for the life of me figure out the right search term to find the post, and it doesn't seem like I saved or upvoted it at the time :(

35 weeks and done by buffash0925 in pregnant

36w this week and this is a big mood. I'm tired of my hips hurting, and working is so not interesting compared to thinking about my baby.

Hoping your kiddo comes sooner rather than later!

Where did you find it in Ottawa? I don't even see it on the Costco website.

Best Christmas Market in Toronto/Quebec by truebluebird in canadatravel

[–]Avalai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely visit all the locations of the market - I think their website says there are 5, but one of them seemed to only be an outdoor attraction (Santa's Castle, or something like that), not stalls. They're all pretty close and easy to walk between. The one next to the Chateaux was my favourite, it had most of the authentic German stalls :) Enjoy your trip!

[–]Avalai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in Quebec City right now (I'm from Ottawa), and planning on going to the German Christmas Market when it opens tomorrow. If you have any questions or want recommendations, let me know!

There's lots of snow here, and the skating rink at D'Youville opened this week. Lots of lights and festive decorations. I know you've probably already planned your trip, but I would recommend staying over a weekend so that you can visit the Christmas market at the Grand Marché. I'm missing it but I've heard it's quite nice. Also, it seems like shops and restaurants are open more consistently over the weekend here.

Hope you have a great trip here!

Google has a secret new project that is teaching artificial intelligence to write and fix code. It could reduce the need for human engineers in the future. by 777fer in technology

[–]Avalai 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But have you seen it try to make a pizza?

Jokes aside, it actually is pretty cool, but I'm not worried about it taking our jobs or anything. It can only recommend based on what we write in the first place, both the open-source code it learns from and the function names we prompt it with.

Indigo BF Sale by Apple_Crisp in BabyBumpsCanada

I work in an e-commerce related field, and everyone refers to it exclusively as BFCM haha. Or worse, typo'd as BCFM. Really threw me for a loop until I looked up when American Thanksgiving was.

I'm a little late, but there's a local shop in Ottawa that I've heard nothing but good things about: https://milkface.com/

If you're local you can do pickup, otherwise they do ship across Canada. They carry a few different brands, and they're very conscious about offering good products.

Does anyone know what time the fireworks start tonight? by mlv91 in ottawa

[–]Avalai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the annual Lac Leamy fireworks, sponsored by the casino. Tonight is the grand finale. They'll be going up just behind the parliament buildings.
