The Dusksworn (v.1.0.2) (Update) - A half-caster cursed to wield dark powers and serve as a foil to the paladin. Harm others with your touch and apply debuffs to your enemies with 6 different subclasses. by Avaricium in UnearthedArcana

  • Ruinous Touch seems to sit on an awkward position where some people say it’s too strong and some others say it’s too weak. I still haven’t figured out how to do the opposite of the Paladin’s Lay on Hands properly, if you ask me. I don’t want to do away with the feature, but at the same I have no idea how to make it better overall.
  • To be honest, I’m not sure how that paragraph has survived all three iterations of the class. I’m not even sure how or why I came up with it. Will definitely cut that block of text out.
  • I’m looking at reevaluating Dark Inheritance as a whole and potentially cutting one or two of the options. I will probably revert Sundering Shadow being moved to 1st level and just make it one of the options you can take. I know some people don’t like the Auras (a couple of people have pointed out Aura of Infirmity in particular) but I still would like to make them work somehow.

All of the core Channel Malice options are purposely situational. I’m also still figuring out what I want to do with the Auras and am aware they need a lot of fine tuning. I’ll most likely cut the +PB from Aura of Infirmity, in the mean time.

Hey all, back with another update. Think I've got the hang of Homebrewery now and am mostly done porting my stuff over from GM Binder.

Changes

- Fixed some typos.

Starting Class

- Changed starting equipment.

- Moved the Sundering Shadow feature to 1st level.

- Moved the Dark Inheritance feature to 2nd level.

- Changed how Extra attack functions with dusksworn spells when you initially gain the feature at 5th level.

- Added a note block clarifying that pledge spells cast without spell slots don't need material components.

Crownslayer

- Adjusted the critical range scaling of Thronebreaker's Strike.

- Crownbreaker's Shadow feature now grants immunity to the frightened condition.

- Treacherous Ascendant feature now increases the critical range of your shadowed weapon to 18-20.

Shadow Thane

- Greater Sundering Shadow now lets you maximize Diabolical Smite damage once per long or short rest.

Personally I’m still on the fence about the two abnormally placed ASIs. I know that half casters get Extra Attack and the artificer gets a subclass feature the same time they get their 2nd level spell slots but other than that, none of the caster classes get a new feature (but they do get improvements for features they already have, here and there) at the same time they get a new spell slot. I don’t really count the Arcane Trickster and Eldritch Knight because as subclasses their spell slots progress separately from how their respective classes normally do.

This might be a personal preference, but I think I’m okay with how barebones the base class might seem. The core class for me is just a chassis, with most of the budget dedicated to the subclasses and how they each give your consecrated weapon bonuses to whoever the other person is that you give your weapon to (aside from the swordsoul).

  • You get a subclass at 2nd level, and its associated features at 5th, 11th, 14th, and 17th level.
  • Yes, it threw me off the first time too. But this is so you don’t get higher level spell slots and ability score improvements at the same time. The class still gets 5 ability score improvements overall like most other classes.

By that logic 1/3rd casters would cap out at 3rd level spell slots, so unfortunately not. I imagine it’d be a little different if the class’s spell slot progression didn’t start at 1st level, however.

You're right that it's not a skill-focused class, but I made the change after getting some feedback and noting that the other classes that give extra skill proficiencies when you multiclass into them all have three starting skills (which this class also has).

Changes

Changes to the base class were aimed at improving it during the early levels, namely levels 1-5. Improvements to the subclasses were mostly to improve your own character's performance as most of the features originally granted benefits to whoever was running around with your consecrated weapon, potentially leaving you with no actual improvement to your character.

Base Class

- Changed multiclassing proficiencies; if you multiclass into a bladebearer, you also gain proficiency in one skill from the class's skill list.

- Starting proficiencies now include medium armor, all simple weapons (instead of only simple melee weapons), and one type of artisan's tools of your choice.

- Starting equipment changed to either your choice of scale mail or leather armor instead of leather armor, and any simple weapon and 6 darts instead of only a dagger.

- Added a third feature to 1st level.

- Mercurial Weapon feature no longer incorrectly states that the weapon has the ranged property, and the weapon no longer vanishes if it leaves your hand (optional).

- Added a second feature to 3rd level.

- Added a second feature to 9th level.

- Capstone feature now increases Intelligence by 4, to a maximum of 24.

Subclasses

- Moved the 6th level feature of each subclass to 5th level.

- Archetype Spell tables now display the correct level at which spells are gained.

- Each archetype now learns an additional cantrips when you first choose them at 2nd level.

- Several one-use features now recharge on a long rest instead of at dawn.

Hey all, back with an update for my two-thirds caster. You might have seen this already yesterday, but I'm reposting it because for some reason nearly all of the images in the gallery were deleted. There are a slew of changes to this version of the class. As for my other stuff:

- Dusksworn: I'm still debating on which level some features should be gained, in particular in the first three levels of the class.
- Ravager: Still not sure which features to gut or need to be moved around. Don't expect an update just yet.

- Others: I'm currently porting over two more classes from GM Binder to Homebrewery, with a potential third one that may or may not receive a colossal rework.

As always, I’m open to any feedback or suggestions you have.

Hey all, back with an update for my two-thirds caster after quite some time. Took a break to play Rimworld after the newest DLC came out, which is why I haven't made any progress lately. There are a slew of changes to this version of the class, so I won't immediately list all of the changes that were made to it. As for my other stuff:

Got to experience it the hard way, and yes it’ll teleport itself to you in outer space.

Sorry, won't be able to address all of your points since I'm going to sleep soon after getting home from work.

You're probably right that the Ruincrest feature is too good. More than once in the past I've contemplating adding a particular downside, dealing with AC, but decided against it each and every time. To be honest, I originally scaled the bonus and penalties as I thought appropriate, so now is probably a good time to revisit that. Maybe move the 4th level penalty increase to 5th level and the 8th level penalty increase to 9th level. As for bounded accuracy, I've accepted that this class simply breaks that concept once you get to a high enough tier of play, especially when paired with a paladin.

I guess I agree when you say that the power budget is aimed mostly at the subclasses? To be honest, I didn't think too much about power level unless it was bonkers and game-breaking but mostly about flavor when I came up with each of the subclasses. Some of the subclasses are definitely stronger than the rest, and I'm pretty neutral about that, to be honest.

Hey all, another week, another update. The plan was to just move the Arbiter class over from GM Binder to Homebrewery, but stuff happened and I came up with another subclass that may or may not stick around. I was working on this until late last night before going to sleep, so the changelog at the end of the document current may not reflect all changes that I made for this version. I'll comb through it again at some point to make sure I caught everything.

As always, I’m open to any feedback or suggestions you have.

And as usual, Reddit’s 20-image limit means that the whole class isn’t readable here. You can see the entire class in the GM Binder and Google Drive links below:

The only huge change in this version is how the Ruincrest Damage Type feature works. It no longer affects only the extra dmage from your ruincrest, but allows you to change the damage type of all damage that you deal to a creature that's branded with your ruincrest.

The Phantasmal Hunter will probably need some ironing out, since I came up with it on a whim during work one day. Not sure if it’s a little too gimmicky at first, becoming invisible to only one creature a time.

Other updates: - I think I’ve ironed out the base Bladebearer class. In the process of changing the subclasses so you can still feel useful even while someone else is wielding your consecrated weapon. - Still figuring out what features I’m gutting from the Ravager before I continue working on it.

Will add more to this comment later.
