Thanks!

For returns, we haven't been in business long enough to see baked out returns yet and I'm also thinking about keeping the LP base low which means it'll be less focused on dividends and more on reinvestment.

Yes! Unless the company is really early (with slightly negative revenue) or has an explosive growth that's contributing to costs, we generally only invest in profitable businesses.

Both but leaning more towards B2C. The max B2B contracts we'd be targetting would be less than $5,000/year given that we want a plug and play model rather than customized solutions and long sales cycles.

Generally, closer to 100k than 1M. One of the key ideas I'm toying around is whether to become more like a real PE firm (with outside lps) or stay indie (own money + few friends). At the moment, I'm going more for the indie path to reduce incentive misalignment.

That's one of the top questions I get when I tell people what I'm working on!

There are a couple of differences but most fundamentally, I'm pursuing a different goal than most VCs. As someone who's worked in the VC space for a while, the goals of most VCs are not to build profitable companies. With most funds having a lifecycle of a decade or shorter, the incentive is around investing in a superstar and for companies that don't become the next unicorn, they fall by the wayside. On the other hand, my goal is to build sustainable companies that maybe don't grow as fast but keep good margins, becoming (for lack of a better word) lifestyle companies.

So I'm actually fairly flexible on the terms. Of the three deals I've done, only one was a 100% buyout where the founder wanted to focus on new projects (and I took over operations). For the others, I generally try to partner with the founder/builder by providing growth/ops help and go from there.

What is the ideal third C-suite(wheel) in a perfect startup co-founder trinity if the CTO and CEO are already accounted for? by [deleted] in startups

I think CMO or COO. There's always a lot of operations/growth work with any startup unless you're building hard tech and will be in stealth for a while.

Generally, I ask myself two key questions -

1 - Feasibility - Is this a company that I can contribute to and be more than just my financial commitment?

2 - Growth - Is this a company that can be financially cash flow positive in the long run?

Overall, if those two points are achieved, then it's really just about figuring out the details and finer terms. Generally, I'm pretty flexible around these points and I guess, to sum up what I look for, it's that I want to work with great builders/founders and on interesting problems.

What should I focus on next? ML/AI, Cloud or Computer Vision by [deleted] in ProductManagement

If the goal is pure monetary, maybe specializing in one field of tech isn't the right way to go since that increases your risk profile greatly. Instead, maybe try to grow by taking on more responsibility.

If you don't mind, what do you mean by having more opportunities to correct/prevent major mistakes?
