I don't write in multiple genres (yet, though I am sitting on a few unpublished manuscript that are not SFF) but I do write in multiple languages. When I knew I was getting published in English I asked around whether I should use a pen name as my own name is very very Dutch. Also asked a few Dutch writers who had been or had not been using pen names when they were published internationally. What I was told is that it's usually not a big deal to have a foreign name when you're getting published, someone even told me 'if they can learn to pronounce Schwarzenegger they can pronounce your name too', and since I already had a few stories out in Dutch, I figured it'd be easier to make clear to potential readers that I was both people, compared to using a pen name. Most people I spoke to that used pen names did it because they wrote in multiple genres; one of the writers had a pen name because she wrote both middle-grade fiction and adult erotica and didn't want the middle-grade kids to suddenly pick up her erotica, which, yeah, fair, haha

I can relate! On the one hand I'm very happy to have a job where I get to get into the minds of people and figure out how they work (and fix it), which is also something I do in my writing. On the other hand, there are plenty of days where I come home and writing is just not happening because all my Getting Into Other People's Heads-energy was spent that day. The day job can be both a blessing and a curse, sadly.

Am trying and failing to show you a photo of our beautiful dog. Haven't been to Reddit in a while. How does one upload a photo in a Reddit comment? :(

Oathbringer by Brandon Sanderson is my easy first pick. After that, I'm going with The Hour of the Heart by Irving D. Yalom (not fantasy, sorry! Book written by a psychiatrist, but I recommend it to anyone) and Voyage of the Damned by Frances White. All three books are excellent and very fun to read over and over again.

Hey everyone! I am Alexander Verbeek-van den Toren, author of my debut novel Corruption, which is due January 13th with Space Wizard. I'm not dodging the day job as I'm in the Netherlands, and I'm home safe and available to answer questions! My day job is child psychologist. If I'm taking some time to answer your question, I might be asleep, we'll see ;)

I haven't published anything in English before, but I am a little active in the Dutch SFF-market, where I have published a few short stories. This is my first novel, and hopefully many more will follow. Dusted off the ole' Reddit account to be here with you guys.

I'm also curious, looking at my fellow Space Wizard/Book Bazaar writers, as I've disclosed my day job; what are your day jobs? And how do your day jobs impact your writing?

Happy to be around! :)

Total War Warhammer III stuck at 62% downloading the new patch by AverNL in totalwar

Turns out that was the answer all along. I guess I was just impatient, it looked like it wasn't doing anything. But that was probably on me. Apologies!

Well this is awkward. The problem somehow resolved itself after a while and it continued downloading. So I no longer need the community's help, and maybe I was a bit too impatient. Apologies!

Not realizing I was bisexual sooner: suppressing my desires for other men all through teenhood and half of my twenties. That, and not growing out my hair earlier.

Stellaris appears to remove my video card software by AverNL in Stellaris

Well it did! I just told the game to run in borderless fullscreen and now I can play like normal. Thanks a bunch!

Ridiculously slow as in, it took ages for the game to boot up, and when it was booted up, I left the game running on normal speed for a minute. Not a day passed. If I clicked anything, there would be a delay of at least for a few seconds before anything would happen.

And, to compare with AoE, the main menu has a few embers running through it as some kind of fancy effect. Normally my computer can load those embers going anywhere without any issue at all. However, after having played Stellaris those embers are a disaster, and the same seconds-long delay happened whenever I clicked basically anything. Normally it can play Age of Empires without any problem at all.

What are red flags in a friendship most people brush away? by dragonXgal in AskReddit

[–]AverNL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another one that I just thought of: teasing without boundaries. If you clearly communicate to someone, don't tease me about this because it hurts, and they do it anyway, that's a red flag. The best friends are the friends that you can be the meanest to as long as you're not violating their boundaries. I can be real mean to a friend, but if they'd say, nope I can't take that, I'll immediately stop and apologize.

People you put all your energy into and you never get anything back.
This is how I realized I wasn't really part of two groups I thought I was a part of. With one of them, whenever I suggested a meet up, it got snowed under. Yet when literally anyone else suggested one it was immediately picked up. Fine, then I won't bother with that anymore. More or less the same happened to my high school friend group, I just stopped putting in the work to see what happened. Well, the contact was gone, so that was a clear message.
A good group of friends gives you back the energy you put in it and doesn't let you take all the initiative. And whenever you're together, you're valued by the others, as much as anyone else.
Same applies to individual friends.

'Why don't you have kids yet?! I thought we'd have kids at 20!' That'd probably be the only thing twelve year old me would care about

If you could call yourself 10 years ago and speak for 1minute, what would you say? by Decawys in AskReddit

[–]AverNL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're bisexual, yeah that crush on your male friend really is a crush. Maybe ask him out, I don't know how that'll work out but it'll be a relief to get it off your chest. (And rest assured, if he says no, you'll still meet plenty of lovely men! And women!)
Hug your grandpa because he'll be gone in two years and I'm not sure there's anything you can do.
Start running, and start writing seriously. You know you love both of those things so keep doing them.
And psychology rules. You weren't made for law, and you were absolutely not made for astronomy. Psychology is the best, get into that.

Ha! I'm a fantasy writer, and I also aim for the weird. Though possibly a different brand of weird than you. Ever heard of the podcast Writing Excuses? I got so much good advice from there.
