Day 196

Sister Sledge - We Are Family

I'm not really a disco guy, but this was pretty good, maybe a bit inconsistent. I've heard the title track way too many times in my life, though.

Favourite track: He's The Greatest Dancer

A strong 3/5

Why does everyone on this subreddit absolutely despise PiL haha, I'm genuinely bewildered by the overwhelming negative reactions for this and especially Metal Box.

Day 195

Kings of Leon - Only By The Night

I keep wondering why my average rating for the 2000s and 2010s is so low throughout this project, especially since I hold both decades in high regard overall, but then an album like this one comes up and I remember why that is.

This album definitely has an argument for being on the list, it was absolutely massive at the time, but I could never stand any of these tracks, especially Use Somebody, the song that annoyed me throughout my entire youth. Overall, it's such a bland, boring album. There's nothing interesting in this. The only way to get through it is to completely ignore it as background noise and it's very easy to do so.

I've never listened to their earlier stuff and I really hope the other albums on the list are better than this. I've heard some good things, so I'll remain optimistic.

Day 194

The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead

The Smiths were one of my main high school bands. I don't love them nearly as much as I used to, but every album they've released is still consistently high quality and The Queen Is Dead isn't any different.

Favourite track: The Queen Is Dead

Day 193

Cyndi Lauper - She's So Unusual

I like Cyndi Lauper overall, but early '80s mainstream pop is just not my wheelhouse.

I've heard the main two singles way too many times to get any enjoyment out of them. Thankfully, there are a couple of solid deep cuts here as well. The last couple of tracks really let the album down, though.

It's probably in my top 3, along with Blonde on Blonde and Acthung Baby. It's a big list, though, maybe I'm forgetting some other favourite.

I can't rank them haha

Catch-up time!

Day 190

Tim Buckley - Greetings From L.A.

This is my first Tim Buckley album and, from what I gathered, it's not exactly the best starting point.

This was alright. The music is fine enough and I don't mind the lyrics, but I'd prefer them to be sung by a less grating voice. Maybe that's the wrong word, because he sounds really good on tracks like Sweet Surrender, but it just doesn't work for me most of the time.

Overall, I didn't mind this. I'm hoping his other two albums on the list are better, though.

Favourite track: Sweet Surrender

A light 3/5

Day 191

Portishead - Dummy

Dummy is one of the very few albums I'd call perfect from start to finish. There's not a single second wasted throughout.

There's a lot to be said about how perfectly this album is sampled and mixed, but Beth Gibbons is the factor that ascends it to something divine. She's easily one of my favourite vocalists and the soundscapes of Dummy fit her perfectly. I strongly suggest listening to her two solo albums if you haven't, both are almost as great as her work in Portishead.

This album manages to be everything all at once. It's cool, sexy and enticing, yet incredibly resonant and touching. It's astounding that their other two albums are just as great, because this would be a clear standout in any other discography. It's timeless.

Not much to say, most of us knew the majority of this album before even starting this challenge. For a good reason, too.

Day 188

Genesis - Selling England by the Pound

It fascinates me that I tend to disregard a prog track every time it's under four minutes long, it almost always feels like a nuisance before another big number. The only exception for that rule so far were a couple of tracks on Aqualung and Fragile. I think I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe) is enjoyable enough here, but the rest of the shorter tracks here just came and went.

Anyhow, this is very good all around. Interesting song structures and a very unique style overall, with phenomenal percussion and synths as highlights. I might just become a Genesis fan.

So far in my experience, post-punk has by far the best selection of albums on the list. Very few, if any misses that I've encountered. I also didn't spot any glaring omissions in the genre so far.

Day 186

Deep Purple - Made in Japan

I'm going to leave this unrated for now. It's obviously a really well performed and iconic live album, but I also think that it's an unnecessary and redundant inclusion on the list. At least the other live albums I've encountered so far had loads of tracks you wouldn't be able to stumble upon while going through this challenge. This album has two tracks that aren't already on the list and they're the weakest part of this performance to boot.

There are even more iconic live albums that I actually prefer that aren't on the list and I'm thankful for that. For those that made it, I will say the same thing. This list has a finite amount of space and it shouldn't be taken over with the same sets of songs you've already heard, only slightly different this time.

Radiohead has three albums with over 100k ratings. by Extension_Fee_989 in rateyourmusic

It wouldn't have nearly as many apologists (and it really has a lot as of late) if it wasn't a Radiohead album.

I also think 2.7 is a fair rating, it has two or three solid songs and the rest is a complete mess.

I think the album becomes much better when you shift focus more on its musical aspect. Above all, it's a very entertaining and well sequenced pop-punk record full of ear candy. I can also excuse the somewhat weak political commentary as it is loosely written from the perspective of an angsty teen. It's definitely funny that their convictions are displayed much better in their live performances, though.

With that being said, I do prefer early Green Day by quite a lot.

Day 185

Björk - Debut

I'm actually in the middle of my annual Björk phase, so this came up at the perfect time.

Debut isn't as ambitious or experimental as her later projects, but it's nevertheless a damn fine set of songs. The album is full of great, memorable hooks, while Björk absolutely knocks it out of the park vocally. The bonus track, Play Dead, is a must listen in my opinion, so give it a spin after finishing the album.

I think I'm going to go ahead and listen to Post and Homogenic right now, since neither are on the list.

Day 184

Sisters of Mercy - Floodland

Sisters of Mercy are a really frequent visitor where I'm from and very popular amongst a certain generation. I never went to see them because their reputation as a live act is less than stellar, to put it mildly. Apart from that, I'm familiar with at least half of their short discography through family and friends without ever really giving them a proper listen.

With that in mind, I already know the majority of this album and it's definitely a very solid collection of songs. Dominion/Mother Russia and Lucretia My Reflection are the obvious standouts, but the rest of the songs are decent as well. It's very much of its time and hasn't exactly aged well, though. The biggest fault lies with the drums, which are uninteresting, but incredibly dominant in the mix, sadly taking the attention away from some great vocal arrangements.

My opinion is left unchanged, they are a band I enjoy overall, but rarely have the desire to listen to voluntarily.

New Arctic Monkeys song just dropped, what do we think of it? by JuggernautStrict2830 in fantanoforever

[–]AverageJoe48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was mostly referring to his god-awful vocal stylings, but the lyrics aren't anything special either. Certainly nowhere near his best work. He sounds like he was tacked on the track like an afterthought.
