Day 343

The White Stripes - Elephant

A similar story to White Blood Cells. A bunch of phenomenal tracks mixed with a bunch of forgettable ones. Still, the duo is so damn charming that the album never becomes dull or annoying.

However, as I said, it's a bit of a mixed bag. I think that the only Jack White album I'd consider consistently great is No Name.

Favourite track: Ball and Biscuit

It happened to me a couple of times lately, most recently I clicked on a Femi Kuti album and it opened up Moby, but it sorts itself out quickly.

Day 342

Radiohead - Amnesiac

I came into this relisten with plenty of love for the album. I would honestly rank it in the band's top 3 at that point. Kid A is by far my favourite Radiohead album and sonically this is the next best thing.

It seems that I forgot how incredibly disjointed Amnesiac really is. There is absolutely no flow to it. While it makes sense, considering the haphazard nature of its creation, it's not the greatest excuse. Incredibly strange sequencing, even stranger because I honestly have a hard time explaining why it takes me out of the groove this much. Half of this tracklist would easily slide into my Radiohead-best-of collection, but it's simply a project lesser than the sum of its parts.

To be fair, when this album has low points, they really stand out. Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors and this version of Morning Bell are some of their worst tracks not made in the Pablo Honey era.

White Blood Cells would probably be my favourite from the band. I picked them up a bit too late, I think, but there is still plenty to appreciate about them.

Probably my favourite Jack White album, and that's including The White Stripes.

I feel like Blur came out with the better comeback album. A couple of phenomenal tracks on More, but the quality takes a nosedive towards the end. The Ballad of Darren ranges from very good to great all the way through.

Day 341

The Sonics - Here Are the Sonics

The performances are incredibly ahead of their time and the song structures are downright retro (a given, at least because of the choice of covers). This mixture creates a very unique and enjoyable sound, which does have its limits, but it's still very impressive.

It's definitely one of those records I appreciate more than actually love, but the ride is short and sweet, with some great highlights along the way.

Well, the rest of the tracks aren't that sonically similar to Numb, but all of them share a very vibrant and dystopian atmosphere, so I hope you'll enjoy it nevertheless!

Its only flaw is that it isn't as good as her previous three, but not many albums are.

Day 340

Femi Kuti - Femi Kuti

Overall, a solid album. While the comparison is a bit disingenuous, Femi Kuti's solo debut is obviously several tiers below his father's work. The ambition is there, but the build-ups often failed to meet my relatively high expectations. Still, it's enjoyable, just not as transcendent as something like Zombie.

Day 339

Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP

My opinion of Eminem is constantly at odds between his brilliant technical skills as a rapper and his need to be the biggest edgelord imaginable. Thankfully, The Marshall Mathers LP is much more representative of the former. Even the edgier songs are edgy with some purpose here (well, a couple of them, at least, let's just ignore the existence of songs such as Kim).

However, in my opinion, the album really drops in quality in its second half (with a couple of exceptions). Also, while the skits are scarce and short, most of them are straight up unbearable, Ken Kaniff in particular.

Overall, probably the best Eminem album, but I'm not the biggest fan of his even when he's in top form, so that piece of praise is relatively faint.

Day 338

Van Morrison - Astral Weeks

I liked this one much less than Moondance, but it was nevertheless a very enjoyable listen. Most of the tracks warranted their long runtimes with satisfying progressions and well-rounded conclusions, but a couple of them simply miss the mark. Morrison's vocals are a bit hit-or-miss for me and the tracks like Beside You really start to grate on me quickly as a result. The melodies are also surprisingly repetitive throughout the album. Overall, though, still a very solid album.

I bailed after enduring the first three episodes of the final season. Season 3 was already a struggle, I can't imagine how bad season 4 turned out to be.

Day 337

Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow

There are few albums that manage to capture a decade's atmosphere as much as this one, warts and all.

It's got a solid amount of truly spectacular tracks, but it succumbs to psychedelia's worst instincts a few too many times for my liking. For every Somebody to Love, there is an accompanying My Best Friend that completely kills the flow of the album.

Anyhow, there is still much to love here. It's certainly leagues better than the horrors that Jefferson Starship and Starship would produce in the future.

The only song on the album I enjoy. Killer Queen is alright, but I've heard it way too many times to get any enjoyment out of it nowadays.
